Participating in team sports influences a young person’s future by building his/her awareness of team working and cooperation, responsibility and by helping him/her make new friends.
Getting sweaty, getting fit, relieving life pressure, and having fun- these are the benefits that participating in team sports could bring. Yet, in addition to these physiological benefits, team sports such as soccer, baseball and basketball, also facilitate the mental development of the participators, especially young ones. This essay will have an empirical discussion on what effects team sports could have on a young person’s future. Three ways through which team sports could influence young people are discussed in the essay: firstly, team sports teach young people the importance of team working and cooperation; secondly, through team sports, young people would become more willing to and more capable to take responsibilities; lastly, doing team sports is a non-substitutable way of social socializing.
Team sport is never a one-man game. Although we have superstars in each kind of team sports: Lionel Messi in soccer; Kevin Durant in basketball; and Adrian Peterson in NFL, they could never win such titles and prizes relying on their own talent without teammates’ support. To illustrate, using a recent example, Oklahoma Thunder, for which team Durant is playing for, have had two consecutive bitter loses against San Antonio Spurs. Durant, this year’s NBA regular season MVP, had good performance; however, his teammates, especially the other starting line-ups, were completely out of shape. These people are hard to reach under normal circumstances. As a consequence, participating in those sports provides an opportunity for the youth to make friends, to network and to learn about different cultures. These “friends in youth” may then become enterprise partners or other forms of “right people”, which could is a very powerful resource in a person’s future career.
In summary, team sport teaches young persons the importance of team working and cooperation in dealing with organisational life. Participating in team sports also facilitates the youth’s awareness of responsibility. Besides, the friendship built through team sport with teammates may become a strong advantage in a young person’s future career development.
Stephen D. Keener, writer for the New York Times, says in his article Sports Teach Kids Valuable Lessons, “The lessons young players gain between the foul lines have guided some to become astronauts, emergency first responders, bestselling authors, military heroes, professional athletes and even president of the United States” (Keener). Keener talks about how playing on a sports team as a child can teach the kid very important characteristics, like: teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. Any kid who wants to get a job when they’re older is going to have to know how to work well with people, which is where learning the skill of teamwork is so huge. Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. Fun and other preferences for adolescents’ sport participation” claims that fun, social aspects, masculinity, and identity are the main reasons youth participate in sports (Skille and Østera˚ s, 360). Oftentimes, athletes forget they are on the same team, and they start to form cliques or groups based around who has the best bench press or 40 meter dash time. As a result, teammates start to compete with each other instead of working towards the same goal. For instance, one coaching journal article claims that “moral reasoning” in youth is determined through “collective norms” or group behaviors that the coach has a hand in influencing (Shields, LaVoi, Bredemeier, Power, 748-749). A proper coaching environment should therefore revolve around a fun, supportive, and collective environment where success is encouraged through the full support of the team. Participating in a sport at an early age can be essential to the overall growth process during a child’s upbringing. Whether the participation is through some sort of organized league or just getting together amongst friends and playing, the lessons learned from this can help teach these kids and provide a positive message to them as they develop. There is a certain point, however, when organized sports can hinder progress, which is when adults get too involved and forget about the underlying reason to why they are helping. While adult involvement is necessary, adult involvement can sometimes send the wrong message to children when they try to make participation become more than just about fun and learning. According to Coakley (2009), “organized sports are worth the effort put forth by adults, as long as they do what is in the best interest of their children and put that thought ahead of their own agenda” (Coakley, p. 151). This is a valid argument because once adults put themselves in front of the children and their values, it needs to be re-evaluated as to why they first got involved in the beginning. Partaking in organized sport and activity from a young age can be beneficial to the overall development of children, as long as decisions actions are made in the best interest of the children and not stemming from ulterior motives of adults.
Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. When I was very young I was on PAL soccer team and the season just started and we were having our first couple of practices and we were not looking to good. But then this new kid joined the team named Timothy everyone called him Tim. I’m not sure why but everyone really liked Tim he was a fantastic soccer player, he was fantastic because he didn’t just take the ball and score he would pass it around to everyone and let them have a chance of participation. Once the season got going the rest of the team got comfortable with the game to where we actually became a pretty decent team and we almost even won the championship all because this little kid named Tim was a amazing team player. For many children, youth sports help them to disregard life's problems. School and home, are non-existent. Instead, children partake in sports to have fun and win games. While also gaining lifelong friends plus receiving several life lessons. However, this escape is slowly going away.
Failure in school can be fixed or hidden from classmates, “But in sports there is no escaping failure” everyone sees if you mess up or make a mistake (Brooks). Kids also learn that they have to be responsible enough to keep up their grades and mange other activities. When children play a team sport they are able to see that their decisions and actions can effect others such as their teammates. Sports provide children with experiences and interactions necessary to grow into an adult with good character and sufficient social skills. Team sports in grade school can offer children and teenager an outlet for stress and negative emotional build-up. Coaches, practices, games or meets and traveling all have a large impact on a person’s charter. Most children who have played a team sport at some time have character traits found in highly successful adults.
