Marijuana is one of the oldest cultivated plants (Nahas 8). Since it became illegal in 1967, there have been questions of whether or not it is good for purposes, such as medicine, other than being a leisure drug. Debates between pro and con groups for the use of marijuana in the medical profession, have been heated and in recent months, referendums have been pasted in a least three states to make it accessible for medical treatment. Personally, I feel that marijuana has the potential to be a significant help with certain aliments, however, more research needs to be done to maximize its potential.
This article also informs us that marijuana has positive attributes as both a medicine and a recreational drug, without very many side effects. Those are just a few of the many reasons why it should be legal. In the article “Top Ten Reasons Marijuana Should Be Legal” they state that it is a scientific fact that marijuana is not toxic to humans. It is nearly impossible to overdose on marijuana, unlike other legal and illegal substances that can cause death when used for the first time in very small amounts. The writer of the article mentions how prohibition has failed to control the use and production of marijuana.
Marijuana has a long medical history, ranging from its anecdotal use in ancient times, through medical prescribing in the 19th and early 20th centuries to modern. "The first record of cannabis as a medicine can be found in the oldest Chinese pharmacopeia, Shen Nag Ben Cao Jing, written in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 AD to 220 AD). It was indicated for rheumatic pain, malaria, constipation, and disorders of the female reproductive system" (Greenwell, 2012, Vol. 26 Issue 1). Pain is one of the most common reasons that medical cannabis is recommended. "Scientists have long known that tetrahydracannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana, is an effective pain killer" (Mcdonagh, 2003). Studies of medical marijuana show significant improvement in various types of pain. "Marijuana appears to exert its pain relieving effects by acting on certain sites in the brain and spinal nerves. These specific sites are called cannabinoid receptors. The cannabinoid compound connects to these receptors, much like two puzzle pieces fitting together. Once, joined, the receptor alters the way the brain cell or nerve cell functions. This alteration of function changes the way the cell perceives painful stimulus, often reducing the intensity of pain that is interpreted by the brain" (Greenwell, 2012, Vol. 26 Issue 1). "The effect that cannabinoid compounds have on the cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) found in the brain can create varying pharmacologic responses based on formulation and patient characteristics" (Borgelt, Franson, & Nussbaum, 2013). Several small clinical studies have confirmed the usefulness of THC, which at doses of 15 to 20mg was found to be comparable to 60 to 120mg pharmaceutical painkillers. But which form of pain manag...
Marijuana is a relatively harmless drug that governments around the world have made illegal. If legalized, marijuana can be beneficial to society in a number of ways: whether it be for medical, economic, or public safety reasons. Marijuana has been proven to treat several life debilitating, and even life threatening diseases. Although it is not a cure, marijuana can ease the pain and suffering of a dying person. Another benefit of legalization is the financial gains that governments will accomplish through the taxation of marijuana. This is a realistic claim if marijuana sales are compared to that of cigarettes; governments make billions each year from cigarette taxes (Caputo and Ostrom 484). Every year law enforcement spends countless man-hours trying to apprehend marijuana dealers and growers. This time would be better utilized in dealing with more serious crimes. This essay will display some main reasons why marijuana is a substance with beneficial uses and applications. First, marijuana can be used as a treatment for the effects of diseases such as AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, and other terminal diseases. A study carried out in California clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of marijuana as a treatment for cancer: “Over 74 percent of the cancer patients treated in the program have reported that marijuana is more effective in relieving their nausea and vomiting than any other drug they have tried.”(Zeese 1990). Chemotherapy for cancer patients often produces nausea and vomiting. Marijuana has been proven to relieve these symptoms and there have been no known side effects recorded (Ad Hoc Group of Experts part 4).
THC causes the high feeling, but also reduces nausea, increases appetite, decreases inflammation, pain, and muscle problems. CBD can reduce pain and control epileptic seizures (“Is Marijuana Medicine”). There are dozens of other problems marijuana can help with, including: HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, glaucoma, Tourette syndrome, cancers, arthritis, and more. Treating these conditions doesn’t even mean you need to smoke cannabis or eat pot brownies, you don’t even need to get high. Using the chemicals and oils, like CBD, extracted from a cannabis plant, patients only need to take a drink, like a shot of cough syrup, to get the benefits without feeling high! The Culture High shares a story about a young boy named Jayden. When Jayden was not even 4 years old yet, he was having about 500 mini-seizures every day. By 4 ½ years old, Jayden was taking 22 pills per day. By 5 years old, he had consumed over 25,000 pills. When the outlook wasn’t getting better for Jayden, his father sought emergency medical advice. His father brought up medicinal marijuana and his doctor agreed anything was worth a shot. The first day Jayden used cannabidiol as medicine, he had his first seizure-free day. Jayden continued to use medicinal marijuana and
Dr. O’Shaugnessy’s report states clearly, that experience indicates the use of marijuana to be a beneficial analgesic, and to have anticonvulsant, and muscle-relaxant properties. He found it to be effective in treating rheumatism (inflammation or pain in muscles or joints), epilepsy, and spasmodic conditions.
Dementia patients saw benefits from medicinal marijuana that helped alleviate anxiety, depression, and hallucinations ("The Effects of Medical Marijuana on Alzheimer's Treatment."). Once again, these benefits from marijuana show how diverse and effective it is when used for treating neurodegenerative diseases. Medical cannabis has been shown to help those who suffer from cancer. One of the largest benefits that cancer patients gain with marijuana is that it helps stop and prevent the spread of tumor growth. “According to the NIH, another cannabinoid, cannabidiol, has been shown to relieve pain as well as lower inflammation.
So far, twenty-three states have legalized cannabis for medical uses. Originally, medical marijuana was use for lesser ailment like pain or insomnia due to the lack or research. Then as people started to do more research they realized marijuana could actually help patient with more serious conditions like glaucoma, or to help those who suffer form seizures, or even to fight cancer. Marijuana helps people with cancer a great deal. For starters, the chemicals in marijuana make patients hungry and help to keep patients strong. Second, research has shown promising evidence that the chemicals in cannabis fight the spreading of cancer cells and even help to kill cancer cells. Medical marijuana also helps to prevent users from obtaining other serious afflictions. Currently, researchers are studying the way the chemicals in marijuana effect amyloid plaques. Amyloid plaques, are the number one cause of Alzheimer’s disease, and researchers now believe marijuana use can help fight and help prevent this horrible disease. All of these studies could help to one day make incredible break throughs in modern medicine, and possibly find cures for Cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Medicinal marijuana is just one reason for the legalization of
For thousands of years human beings have attempted to find ways to get passed the struggles of their lives. This completely natural plant which helped so many people has puzzled the leaders of our nation for a long time. The THC in marijuana causes its users to experience a mild-huluciginic or high. The effect that marijuana has on a person has prevented the product from being legalized. Many other details about the plant, like the speculation of it being a gateway drug, have put another blockage on its legalization. Even though there are speculations about the plant, the benefit that it brings to the table most definitely out way its disadvantages. Marijuana can also alleviate several symptoms associated with cancer and Aids treatments and disorders. While Marijuana is effective as a medicine, it is also extremely lucrative. The economic benefits that Marijuana brings to the table are endless. Upon marijuana’s legalization, the economy would experience an immediate influx. Legalization of Marijuana would also drastically reduce crime in our cities and form a more productive society through its positive uses. The benefits that marijuana brings medically and economically are considerable enough to legalize its use medically or recreational.
Medical marijuana has been used for centuries to combat pain, weakness, anxiety, insomnia, female problems and nausea. Today it is commonly used by cancer and AIDS patients to stimulate hunger, combat nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy or other drug therapy and reduce pain. It has also been shown to be effective in reducing eye pressure, especially in the cases with glaucoma. Medical marijuana, or cannabis, is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant and there is some evidence of cannabis being used medicinally for over four thousand years. Many believe that medical marijuana is a healthy and natural alternative to dangerous and toxic pharmaceuticals that often have side effects worse than the original condition. The United Sates declared marijuana a narcotic and declared it illegal with the passing of the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937.
It can be used to control seizures and tremors related to illnesses such as Epilepsy, Dravet’s Syndrome, and Parkinsons Disease. Marijuana has been known to stop pain, headaches, nausea, fevers, and also tourette syndrome. As seen, there was a story of a five year-old boy who had tourettes; his dad did everything he could to stop his seizures and twitching. He then gave his kid edible medical marijuana and it didn’t solve it, but it was the ONLY thing that helped! There have also been NO reported cases of lung cancer or emphysema attributed to marijuana. “ I suspect that a day's breathing in any city with poor air quality poses more of a threat than inhaling a day's dose -- which for many ailments is just a portion of a joint -- of marijuana. “ (medical marijuana.procon.org) I on the other hand, do believe marijuana can weaken the immune
There is strong evidence marijuana can reduce nausea and pain in cancer chemotherapy, anorexia, and AIDs/HIV patients. In several studies marijuana has been found to reduce anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and many more psychiatric disorders. Some medicine people take for these problems can create worse symptoms. On some anti-depression or anxiety medications it says a possible side effect is increased suicidal, and homicidal thoughts. One should expect when they are taking medications to help their symptoms, they should not be prescribed something that has a possibility of making it worse. Marijuana may not be able to help everything, but it should be there as an option when someone feels they have tried
I think medical marijuana should be legal for the purpose of treatment to patients who are suffering. It is a safer substance than most of the narcotics that patients are prescribed that have discomforting side effects. For example Lester Grinspoon, MD, Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School says: “Marijuana is effective at relieving nausea and vomiting, spasticity, appetite loss, certain types of pain, and other debilitating symptoms. And it is extraordinarily safe -- safer than most medicines prescribed every day. If marijuana were a new discovery rather than a well-known substance carrying cultural and political baggage, it would be hailed as a wonder drug."
