In this day in time, everyone is always talking about their rights as Americans. We have the right to bear arms, the right to vote, the right to freedom of speech and religion. All of this is understandable, but Americans should not forget the other side to it. Just as we have rights as Americans, we also have responsibilities. As stated by John F. Kennedy, “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” As I get older, I have began to wonder what my role as an American Citizen will be. My responsibilities as an American will include being an informed citizen, looking out for future generations, respecting and obeying laws, and contributing to society in my own way. The main responsibility I owe to America, and what we all owe to America is to be an informed citizen. Being an informed citizen includes knowing what is going on in the world to make smart decisions that will affect the country. One example of this is the upcoming election. It is better to be an informed citizen to be able to make the best decision for who should become the next president. Some people’s way of contributing to society could be serving in the military to protect our country. Others even feel their role is a religious responsibility in society such as a minister or preacher. Some people can contribute to society by helping others, such as doctors and nurses. As I’m getting older, I am learning about what my role in society will be so that I may help my country.
