Some factors make it possible for an individual to commit crime or become a victim of crime. In one of such cases, a 24-year-old Australian man charged with raping a toddler was denied bail and returned to jail. The individual had sexually assaulted the young girl in their home in a place called “Bronx.” It was reported that the individual was struggling with alcoholism as was the case with the toddler’s parents. Aikman (2018) notes that the child’s father is said to have spent time in jail while her mother “has also had run-ins with the law.” The article also accuses the police of doing nothing to protect the child, despite being notified severally. Alcohol is said to have been a problem in the area leading to a rise of both domestic violence-related and alcohol-related assaults.
Demographics and Risk Factors for Becoming a Victim or Offender
In this case, the offender is likely to commit the crime because of substance abuse, especially alcohol abuse, which is cited as the most prevalent drug in the area. The risk factors that predict the type of crime include situational factors, for example, taunting, witnessing domestic violence, bullying, and demeaning interactions can be seen as catalysts for violence. However, not all risk factors lead to particular crimes, gun possession may lead to any crime that is violent. Further, no single factor can predict with certainty the type of crime an individual may commit or become a victim. Poverty may be a risk factor for different crimes.
