Fairytales are the first type of stories children hear when they are young. Fairytales are created as magical stories that sound safe and desirable. One of the most valuable fairytale stories is “Beauty and the Best”. Not only is it a princess story, every girl’s favorite, but it is also a story that teaches young girls the importance of being kind and respectful. The classic version of “Beauty and the Beast” by Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont depicts the resilience of Beauty even when she is going through abuse from her sisters and detachment from her father. As children, we are accustomed to the classic tale and the moral theme of looking within a person or, better yet, realizing inner beauty. It takes a lot of kindness and respect within a person to realize the beauty within others. This moral code is somewhat changed in the rewrite of Beauty and the Beast, The Tiger’s Bride written by Angela Carter. Carter uses her skills of rewriting stories to portray the power of feminism through a mature twist on the moral code within the classic. Both authors use fairytale stories to portray the women of their time. The comparison of both texts reflects the values and standards of women during the times in which Carter and Beaumont lived.
