Benedict and Beatrice are: “a pair of outsiders to conventional behaviour, a pair of clowns”. To what extent do you agree?
I believe strongly that Beatrice and Benedick are simply a pair of clowns, I believe this because of how language is used and the portrayal of their genders however on the other hand I think that many readers will disagree believe that Beatrice and Benedick are very serious characters.
One example of language used to portray comedy is repartee; the prime example of this is at the beginning of the play 1.1.88 -1.1.107 this not only creates a comic effect but also characterises Beatrice and Benedick as well as their relationship with one another. The repartee means that the scene is structured very simply making the conversation quick and meaningless with little depth making it appear more humorous to the audience as it doesn’t seem to very serious just a “merry war” (1.1.62) between the two characters; the merry war between the characters is where the repartee mainly lies. “The couple who talk and bicker endlessly thus displaying their intellects, their energy and their compatibility” (Smith, 2007), I believe that Smith’s statement is very accurate the use of sarcastic comments, puns and word play create humour between these two intellects, the light hearted insults create a bantering type of conversation portraying an image that there is some friendship beyond this merry war allowing the clown-like, comical characters to be formed. Much Ado about Nothing was written around two decades after sarcasm was first seen in the English language and therefore at the time and till this day it is vastly based upon the interpretations of the audience, this allowed the audience to make humour from the insults passed bet...

... clown-like figure, the humour is brought from the sexual language Shakespeare uses and the simple concept he wants to remain a bachelor rather than commit in matrimony. “Here a good horse to hire” is one of the outlandish behaviours that Benedick portrays, a bold but light hearted statement stating he’d rather sell himself than fall in love, which is ironic as he does fall in love with Beatrice by the end of the play. The clown-like behaviour may come from a sense that we get from Benedick from his sexual language that he lacks responsibility and maturity.
Overall I believe that although some aspects of the play may be interpreted otherwise, on a whole the characters of Beatrice and Benedick are unconventional characters to Shakespeare’s era and undoubtedly are simply a pair of clowns.

...e down by weeping. Shakespeare shows us that Beatrice is the only character despite some of these positive attributes of Beatrice’s character, she is very rude about men. She says ‘but manhood is melted into curtsies’ showing Benedick her lack of respect towards men. However it is possibly her refreshing honesty that leads her to be a positive role model.
The characters, Beatrice and Benedick have a very complicated relationship. They are always exchanging words and calling each other names. They call each other names from the very beginning of the play to the very end. In act 1, Benedick says “ If Signior Leonato be her father, she would not have his head on her shoulders for all of Messina, as like him as she is ” (1.1.111-113). Beatrice follows by saying, “ I wonder that you will be talking, Signior Benedick, nobody marks you ” (1.1.114-115). These quotes show that they have always had a complicated relationship because they insult each other without them expecting it.
Benedick and Beatrice both benefit from the deceit that they encounter. At first, both are enemies in a battle of insults and wit, until they are each fooled into thinking that the other loves them. When Benedick hears that Beatrice is supposedly attracted to him, he thinks that it is “a gull, but that the white-bearded fellow speaks it: knavery cannot, sure, hide itself in such reverence” (111). Little does he know, Leonato, the "white-bearded fellow," is also in on the joke (111). Benedick starts to admire her when he is aware that Beatrice might actually be attracted to himself, as well. She is also astonished when she first hears that he loves her. However, when Beatrice comes to terms with their affection, she hopes "Benedick [will] love on... And [she] Believe it better than reportingly" (134). In other words, she falls in love with Benedick as soon as she believes that he, too, is fond of her. They each start to fall in love with one another under the pretense that other was hiding their affection from them. Now that they are both in love, they start to open up to each other and prove that the deception they endured was worth it in the end.
She adds that she’s agreeable with everyone, with him as an exception. Benedick retorts that she’s lucky that she doesn’t love him like all the other women he knows, because he loves no one, especially not her. Beatrice responds, “A dear happiness to women, they would have been troubled by a pernicious suitor.... ... middle of paper ...
At the beginning, Benedick’s attitude is negative towards women in general. He swears he will never marry, as he is very critical of women and does not trust any of them not to cheat on him. He seems to oppose with Beatrice in a competition to outwit, outsmart, and out-insult each other. Obviously he has been in some sort of past relationship with Beatrice because when he meets her at the masked ball, she describes him as a selfish pig. We can infer that Benedick has some kind of deep feelings for her because after she insults him he is hurt and says, “Will your grace command me any service to the world’s end? I will go on the slightest errand now to the Antipodes that you can devise to send me on. I will fetch you a toothpick from the furthest inch of Asia . . . do you any embassage to the pigmies, rather than hold three words’ conference with this harpy” (II.i.229–235). This blatantly means that he does not wish to talk to her.
Beatrice and Benedick show their apparent distaste for each other right from the first scene. Beatrice mocks Benedick to the Governor of Messina, claiming that she always beats him in a battle of wits and the last time they crossed paths Benedict’s “five wits went halting off, and now is the whole man governed by one” (1,1,50). Clearly relishing resuming their ‘merry war’, Beatrice cuts Benedick down at the first opportunity, telling him “I wonder that you still will be talking, Signor Benedick, nobody marks you” (1,1,105). Incredulously, Benedick retorts, “what my dear lady distain! Are you yet living?” (1,1,95). So, the dynamic of the two is set and it goes on from there in the same vein. Yet, the reader, even at this early stage may ponder if the lady doth protest too much.
Beatrice and Benedick seem to have had some relationship before the beginning of the book that ended badly. This suggests that the initial situation between Beatrice and Benedick was one of mutual attraction, not of the overt hate they seem to flaunt at the beginning of the play. Scorn of this magnitude is rare among people who dislike each other from the start, and seems very unlikely in a broken up couple. In addition, both Beatrice and Benedick turned out to be very willing to abandon their smear campaigns as soon as they are convinced the other is aching for them. It is ridiculous that one would abandon one's own principals to bail out a hated enemy in trouble. This makes clear that their attitude toward each other is an act. If this is so, what is the purpose of the act...
In William Shakespeare's short play Much Ado About Nothing, he focuses on the social standings and the roles of women in 16th Century Europe. The female protagonist of the play, Beatrice, understands the restrictions placed upon her by society and how these restrictions should limit her as a woman, but she inexorably escapes them by refusing to succumb to the unifying hand of marriage. Throughout the play, Shakespeare displays his profound respect for woman as independent individuals who are fully capable of making their own decisions and suffering their own consequences. Through the plot, he proposes the idea that women who deviate away from the passivity that society expects them to perform attain a more active role in the determination of their future. Contrary to the roles of women of the 16th Century, Shakespeare depiction of Beatrice's independence is symbolic of his stance on the progression and transformation of women's reputation in society.
Both of them despise marriage, are witty, and are each their own people. These, however, are not the reasons why they come together. They are brought together by their respective companions who conspire to tell each of them that the one loves the other as the two misdirected lovers listen in. In his speech directly after this, Benedick is swayed to a life that he previously would have avoided at all costs. In hearing of Beatrice’s supposed affection, he immediately changes his entire outlook on perpetual bachelorhood and pronounces a love that is not real or his own, but comes secondhand from trickery.
...he other hand, Beatrice and Benedick are comedy-makers and Beatrice is not ruled by her father as Hero clearly is. It does take Don Pedro’s benevolent plot to bring Benedick and Beatrice together, however. A modern audience would prefer Beatrice to Hero as she is her own self and admirable. The relationships also differ because Benedick and Beatrice’s relationship slowly grew whereas Claudio and Hero’s relationship was love at first sight. Perhaps it was a little hasty as we see in Act 4 how their love turns sour.
Comedy is used to establish the theme that love isn’t always easy. This is shown when Puck puts the love potion in the wrong Athenian’s eyes. The audience can clearly see the mistake that Puck makes is supposed to be comical but the conflicts that result, make the theme more serious. Shakespeare also shows comedy in his play when he causes Tatiana, queen of the fairies, to fall in love with Bottom. "Why do they run away? This is a knavery of them to make me afeard."(86) In this quote, the speaker, Bottom, is wondering why everyone is afraid of him. He doesn 't realize that as a practical joke Puck has put an ass head on his shoulders. This makes all of his companions afraid of him so that they run away. In The Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare creates humour through his characters by creating false realities (as demonstrated by Petruchio’s behaviour and attire in the scene of his wedding) and by the use of subterfuge and mistaken identity (shown in the final scenes with the transformation of Kate and Bianca’s respective personas). He also uses irony quite extensively, especially towards the end of the play (as can be seen in the final ‘wager’ scene).

Mr. Bennet and Mrs. Bennet are two characters from Pride and Prejudice, which was written by Jane Austin. This story takes place at some point during the Napoleonic Wars. They are the parents of five girls, Elizabeth Bennet, Mary Bennet, Jane Bennet, Lydia Bennet, and Kitty Bennet. The relationship between the two is very poor. Mrs. Bennet is more outgoing than Mr. Bennet. She thinks Mr. Bennet is going to die soon and the only thing that occupies her thoughts is her daughters getting married. Mr. Bennet and Mrs. Bennet have opposite personalities, different relationships with their daughters, and different daughters they admire.
