Aside from the similar visual styles of Battleship Potemkin and The Birth
of a Nation, both films are examples of civil unrest during periods of political
instability in a historical setting. Both movies take place during a national
revolution and involve several instances of social turmoil and disturbance. The
styles of these films can be contrasted by viewing their use of montage, focus,
and basic film techniques in relation to thematic and constructive plot elements.
The Birth of a Nation is a story about the consequences of the Civil War
on the friendship of a northern and southern family. It expresses the effects of
the war on their lives in relation to major historical and political events. This
movie is directed by D.W. Griffith and is based on the story of the origins of the
Ku Klux Klan. In this film, Griffith uses certain film techniques, which have
become the fundamental basis of all movies today. These include the addition of
a musical score, the use of natural outdoor landscapes as backgrounds, close-ups,
long shots, panning, cross-cutting, the iris effect, the combination of parallel
action and editing in a montage. The Birth of a Nation is also the first film to
incorporate the dramatization of history in a narrative structure, as the first epic.
Before it was made, many films were only one reel in length and involved no
camera movement or editing. This film brought movies into large theaters and
completely revolutionized the way they were made. (Smith 31-33)

that can be contrived through the collision of ideas in the montage. Both films
efficiently present themes of dehumanization and revolution during periods of
societal injustice and are concrete examples of social disorder.

"Birth of a Nation" tells the story of the Civil. One of its main missions is to portray the true southern way of life. The south was an aristocratic society. Everybody was happy and content with their everyday lives. Even slaves shown in the movie looked happy and were even dancing. They didn't look as they were going through big hardships and were oppressed by their masters. The south fought for preserving a culture that believed in the superiority of the white race, which meant that even those whites who didn't own slaves might still defend a slave culture. The people were made to feel better than blacks. Slavery was the heart of the Southern culture. Without slavery the structure of society would collapse. The South fought the war not only to protect their economic interests, but to preserve a culture and a way of life.

Beginning the mid 1920s, Hollywood’s ostensibly all-powerful film studios controlled the American film industry, creating a period of film history now recognized as “Classical Hollywood”. Distinguished by a practical, workmanlike, “invisible” method of filmmaking- whose purpose was to demand as little attention to the camera as possible, Classical Hollywood cinema supported undeviating storylines (with the occasional flashback being an exception), an observance of a the three act structure, frontality, and visibly identified goals for the “hero” to work toward and well-defined conflict/story resolution, most commonly illustrated with the employment of the “happy ending”. Studios understood precisely what an audience desired, and accommodated their wants and needs, resulting in films that were generally all the same, starring similar (sometimes the same) actors, crafted in a similar manner. It became the principal style throughout the western world against which all other styles were judged. While there have been some deviations and experiments with the format in the past 50 plus ye...

On March 3, 1915 the movie The Birth of a Nation was released at the Liberty Theatre in New York City. This film was financed, filmed, and released by the Epoch Producing Corporation of D.W. Griffith and Harry T. Aitken. It was one of the first films to ever use deep-focus shots, night photography, and to be explicitly controversial with the derogatory view of blacks.
When deciding what movie to do for this particular paper I faced a few issues. I knew what the requirements were, but I wanted something different and something I could have fun watching and writing as well. The Birth of a Nation (1915) is one of the most controversial movies ever made in Hollywood, some people even consider it the most controversial movie in the long history of Hollywood. Birth of a Nation focuses on the Stoneman family and their friendship with the Cameron’s which is put into question due to the Civil War, and both families being on different sides. The whole dysfunction between the families is carried out through important political events such as: Lincoln’s assassination, and the birth of the Ku Klux Kan. D.W. Griffith is the director of the movie, and him being born into a confederate family in the South, the movie portrays the South as noble and righteous men, who are fighting against the evil Yankees from the North, who have black union soldiers among them, whom overtake the town of Piedmont, which leads the KKK to take action and according to the movie become the savior of white supremacy. During this essay, I would focus on the themes of racial inequality, racism, and the archetypical portrayal of black people in the movie, which are significant especially during the era when the film was released.
