4942-004 Cool Jazz- Miles Davis Baroque music- Bach The style of cool Jazz and typical Baroque music have many similar musical traits. The two songs that are going to be looked at here are “So What” by Miles Davis and Bach’s “Brandenburg concerto No. 5.” Some of the musical traits include similar music notation and homophonically harmonized melodies. The musical notation is similar in both styles in that it is a necessary part of the form and it conveys the performance practices of each style. Typical of Baroque music a system of figured bass is used to indicate the cords that are to be played in the basso continuo.
In this excerpt of Bach’s brandenburg concerto No. 5 you can see the figured bass pictured here. Notated on the staff you see the bass note with numbers underneath to tell the performer what intervals above the provided note are supposed to be played. In the rhythm section of Jazz music chord symbols are often used. In a bass line written with chord symbols the rhythm and the notes played are left up to the performer. This is done to reflect the chord and the style of the song as best they can. Although both music genres convey chords without traditional notation their reasoning for this is

It is a chord accompaniment throughout the piece. As soon as the figured bass was a common form to put above the music, it was easier to play music without the certain notes, and that is kind of how improvisation in baroque came up. It is even said that Bach improvised a lot of his pieces on the piano and in his head and wrote them down later. In this way a lot of actual Baroque music can be seen as improvisation. There was also a stable base form (basso continuo and walking base) for both types. Miles Davis is also said to have written down several improvised solos he has heard people play off melodies and created a new melody out of
Cool jazz as a music genre had more structure than its bebop counterpart. Most of the time, cool jazz songs were created and performed using written arrangements. This gives the songs a more consistent feeling. It also conveyed a feeling of relaxation, as with written arrangements, the musicians are more relaxed and tend to have less expressions when performing. This was one of the characteristics that made cool jazz gain its label “cool.”
When discussing the history of Jazz, an important type of music is developed that changed the music industry. This music, bebop, helped to influence other types of music, and it also let us appreciate jazz more
This book by John Rupert Martin is a good introductory book in the understanding of Baroque artists and their tremendous variety. Martin defines the Baroque characteristics, but only very broadly leaving a significant amount of room for the reader to make his own deductions. In general, Martin believes that the typical definitions of the Baroque are "too restrictive and hence likely to create more problems of classification and interpretation than it solves." Even the time of the Baroque is left open to the reader when Martin says the Baroque is roughly comprehended by the seventeenth century. It is important to note at the outset that this is only a convenient approximation; for epoch as a whole can certainly not be fitted into such a strait-jacket." This helps to define the Baroque much more generally as a gradual change which can much easily be noticed from the present than the past.
The cool jazz style arose after WW2. This new style of jazz was created by the great Miles Davis. He is credit for this because of his Birth of Cool recording but in fact Lester Young is the face of cool Jazz. In spite of the fact that there were many other artists who made the cool jazz sound, a standout amongst the most compelling was Lester Young. This was a young saxophone player who had a more casual style than huge numbers compared to his peers, with an attention on smooth playing and an inclination to fall simply behind the beat as opposed to pushing it ahead.
According to Rowell, "Musical composition became much longer, and composer were forced to evolve new means of maintaining unity and continuity over long time spans" during the Baroque period. Therefore, the texture of music became very important. When I look at the musical texutre of the Cantata No. 78 by J. S. Bach, I realized that this piece was unified very well within a movement and as a whole piece by many techniques. Some of those techniques were found in the text, and the others were in the music.
Jazz is referred as “America’s classical music,” and is one of North America’s and most celebrated genres. The history of Jazz can be traced back to the early era of the 20th century of the U.S. “A History of Jazz” presents From Ragtime and Blues to Big Band and Bebop, jazz has been a part of a proud African American tradition for over 100 years. (TheRealConcertKing), the polyphonic contrapuntal style is apparent. However, it is accompanied by concerto grosso with use of the technique of terraced dynamics in ritornello form (Whitehouse 76). In Johann Sebastian Bach’s, “Brandenburg Concerto No 4 G major BWV 1049”(Classical Vault 2), the major and minor tonality is obvious, The terraced dynamic are clearly heard when the solo (violin and two flutes) play and when the full orchestra plays (Whitehouse 86). Author Whitehouse writes,” The immediate decrease in sound when the smaller group plays and a return to a full sound when the full orchestra plays” (Whitehouse 87). Bach also used ritornello form in “Brandenburg Concerto No 4 G major BWV 1049” (Classical Vault 2). Bach’s chosen ripieno is, tutti, solo, tutti, solo, tutti, solo (Whitehouse 8...
Later on, when the black people started to have some civil rights, jazz bands were starting to merge and the first bands were created around in New Orleans at the early 20th century. The bands included instruments as trumpets, clarinets, trombones, tubas, banjos and drums. Jazz started to grow popular and a string bass or a piano was also found in the new bands. As the jazz grew more popular, it also started to appear new styles of jazz and the “swing” jazz were made. In the original jazz, there were only a few instruments played at the same time. But in the new jazz there were lots of instruments playing at the same time creating a more organized feeling. The “swing” jazz was way more popular and it was common to dance to swing jazz. The swing jazz grew popular in the 30's after the wall street crash and depression roamed in America. Since the swing jazz were so easy to dance to, people started to cheer themselves up with dancing. A few more different sorts of jazz have developed throughout the years and left us with the jazz we got toda...

Felix Mendelssohn was one of the most famous composers during the 19th century. Although in his music he did show some features of romanticism, he was strongly influenced by traditional genres such as counterpoint etc. In this essay, the biography of the composer, background of the genre and analysis of the piece will be investigated
This era is recognized by the creation of tonality, as well as the establishment of the opera, cantata, and concerto. Different from the classical era, this era featured a unity of mood, a continuous rhythm and melody, and a predominantly polyphonic texture, meaning that there were two melody lines, each fighting for the listener 's attention. The composers from the Baroque period were well-known for their extravagant, frivolous and bizarre usage of their instruments and their performances. The most notable influence from this era is in modern music especially rock music, because in rock music emotions are intense and the mood are usually unified just like the music from the Baroque period. Some artists and rock bands have adopted this bizarre style, for example Prince and Lady Gaga. Many rock bands were inspired by composers of this era such as Bach because of the intensity of his
As jazz continued to grow, few musicians increased the popularity for jazz music. In fact, one of the first jazz musicians was Bunny Bolden. Bolden was in a band that became famous for their unique music blend. In their music they combined blues, minstrel, ragtime, and other elements in groundbreaking ways (3). As a result, swing, which uses rhythmic techniques to give the music a sense of movement, was created from Bolden’s music. At the same time Dixieland, one of the earliest forms of jazz, was invented
