Throughout history, art has been used to reflect major events, and portray powerful figures. When art of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque period is studied, then it would be found that subjects portrayed in the artwork of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance primarily reflected what was viewed as the leading authoritative figure at the time. However, the art of that Baroque period did not completely reflect the major authoritative figure of the time. During the Baroque period, individualism was highly revered. This value, in many ways, replaced the traditional way of thinking, which was that of community. In addition, at this time religion as well as monarchy were still major aspects of society, though their appeal began to fade as the 18th century continued. This change occurred because of the the spread of naturalism. Naturalism caused a decrease in religious power in that it the spread of naturalism drew art away from the influence of the Church, causing a shift in views about realistic representations of the physical world. The Church no longer influenced the style of artwork created, however, religious themes were still heavily featured in many artworks of the Renaissance, thought it was the artist's choice with they wished to create a religious piece. In the Renaissance, art was greatly connected to the artist, rather than outside factors. This was due to the newfound independence of society from the Church that came with the popularity of humanism. Due to the representation of physical world scenes being the subject of Renaissance artworks, though religious pieces were still heavily featured, it can be said that artwork in the Renaissance, for the most part, accurately represented what was viewed as the leading authoritative figure at the
