The Banking Concept of Education is a common approach used in modern classrooms. This concept, as termed by Paulo Freire, refers to the metaphor of educators depositing knowledge into the empty containers that are students. This method of teaching essentially delays the intellectual growth of students by turning them into mindless receivers of information. This method incorporates no communication, which is an essential tool for learning. Students receive information, memorize it, and regurgitate it without understanding the significance of what they are being taught. The Banking Concept also results in a lack of critical thinking and knowledge ownership among students.
While the Banking Concept of Education is believed by some to be essential for standards-of-learning testing, a student’s education should not be bound by restrictions of standardized testing. Students should …show more content…

The Problem Solving method is a unique way of learning that encompasses more than simple memorization of information. It is a two way street that requires an understanding of information as well as creative application of that information externally. Unlike the Banking Method, this approach gives students the opportunity to communicate with others in order to further their understanding of a concept. Communication influences the use of critical thinking and creativity among students working with one another.
What makes us ‘human’ is our ability to think intuitively using our brains. In this essence, the Banking Concept somewhat dehumanizes both students and teachers. By assuming the roles of teachers as depositors and students as receptors, the Banking Concept metaphorically changes humans into objects. Humans, as objects, have no autonomy and therefore no ability to rationalize and conceptualize knowledge at a personal level.
