San Diego has a long history of pride in its sports teams from high school level all the way to the professional leagues. The mascots that represent these teams are a stable part of that history and none represent the spirit of San Diego More than SDSU’s Aztec. Recently, there has been growing support to remove the Aztec from that history with the claim that he represents racial profiling. With the growing support of millennials jumping on board this action without reason or understanding of their involvement, we see a rapidly growing issue on campus. The City of San Diego and SDSU should not allow for the Aztec Mascot to be removed, as it is unreasonable without legitimate cause as every precaution has been taken to ensure it accurate representation, and the involvement of millennials is its only support. …show more content…
Ch.A for short, making allegations that using the Aztec as the mascot degrades the Native American image and is created from racial profiling. On campus, one student representing M.E. Ch.A by the name of Michelle Parra made herself heard stating “We’re here asking you all to represent us as students of color,”(Fritz) she said. “This is unacceptable that we are in this (educational system), and we are still having to deal with racism.”(Fritz) This small group of individuals chose the campus quad to try and assemble a following with the approval of the school in attempts to rally support from anyone and everyone they could reach. Even though the school promotes debates, it is also believed by many that the campus is a place to learn and with these rallies taking place many students where distracted and taken away from their
A high school in Chattanooga, Tennessee suspended a student for wearing a jacket that depicted a Confederate flag. The school had already banded the flag prior to the student’s suspension, for fear of racial backlash. In a slim one-vote margin, the court upheld the school’s decision, solely for the possibility that racial retaliation could ensue. The student’s parents did appeal the decision, but the court deemed that this was not a violation of the student’s freedom of speech or expression.
Cultural stereotypes have always existed and while they may have been acceptable to society in the past, that does not compel us to accept them in today’s society. One such stereotype which is used is that of Native American names and imagery for sports teams and in particular The Washington Redskins of the National Football league. While for many people, this is an argument that has just recently arisen, in actuality, the debate over the use of native names and images has been an ongoing issue for over 50 years. The subject of the Washington Redskins name has been debated across politics, media, academia, religious backgrounds and in the public square for many years.
...ers' evolution from mother and student into a leading voice against the merchandising of Native American sacred symbols -- and shows the lengths to which fans will go to preserve their mascots." In keeping all the Native American Mascots in schools, colleges, and professional sports teams we are showing a lack of respect. The Native Americans have voiced the lack of honor these names are bringing to them. "The fact that history has ignored the incredible pain we have inflicted on Native Americans does not now give us the right to ignore their largely muted call." Americans need to take a step back think about how they would feel if there ritual and or sacred tradition was misused. "We feel that we are being put in a position of sacrificing our dignity and pride and will never be treated as equals in white society as long as the use of Indian symbols continues."
Issue of whether to keep Mascots in schools or not, started in late 1970’s and from then this debate is going on. Most of the schools have Indian Mascots in place for half a century and suddenly it become problem to use Indian Mascots. Over 500 Native American organizations also announced their support for the removal of those mascots and over 1200 schools across the United States have changed the name of their sports teams and some school refused to play with those schools using Indian mascots. But some school still think that using mascots are just paying homage to the Native peoples and it’s just another group claiming to be offended. Sports teams used those mascots to promote their team’s athletic powers, like wolf, lion and eagle etc. How portrait of an Indain wearing hat with feather or headdress can be offensive or racist? One thing which never be done up to now that is to view our history from Native eyes. First of all, learn about their culture and their living style from their new perspective not the one which is given in our history books. From last hundred years we taught our generations that this is our country and we had a very long war with Indians which won. We also tell different kind of stories like burning of Fort Pequot Indians because they had trade relationship with British company. Can stories like this possibly be related to mascot issue? Using mascots are really a problem or just a political incorrectness.
She even describes what that experience in the school environment was like for her. This tactic directly coincides with pathos, one of the modes of persuasion. Her purpose of creating this article goes along with wanting to persuade those who engage in using offensive Native American imagery to realize why it’s harmful and offensive. By using pathos, she’s able to get inside the reader’s emotions to feel some of the feelings she had to feel as she grew up. The essay only includes a brief description of her perspective in attending a school that had a Native American mascot, but the way she writes about how she was silenced with her opinion by staff would raise questions for people who believe that everyone should have a voice. Even more so if that voice is directly affected by said mascot. The author goes on to speak about how she purposely missed her high school reunion because of the plans that was rumored to be happening. The plan involved an alumni student painting a warrior face on the gym to commemorate their old mascot. Some may see this as harmless, but the mascot was eventually changed years ago, when they still attended – so why would that be necessary? I agree that the mascot should have been changed, but some may still finish this article and wonder how and why it offended her so thoroughly. Adding more
Its hell, all this suffering is unbearable all the waiting for the military for the government to return and protect us from these…these undead monstrosities. They’re everywhere at night in fact they mostly only seem to come out at night. In all the time of this waiting for the government I finally came to the conclusion that they weren’t coming that they had either saved themselves or had perished like nearly all of the rest of humanity did. However my wife Mari and my adopted brother Rollo from Africa seemed to have hope… hope that someone would create a new government and rebuild society, and I Barry Merlyn think that I have what it takes to rebuild this world.
Mascots are beloved figure heads for sports teams everywhere almost every sport team has a mascot of some kind; that said, sometimes instead of bring people together it can cause a rift between two cultures. Such as Washington’s D.C.’s football team the “Redskins” often the word redskin was a derogatory word used against the Native Americans and while it may seem as though paying homage to the Native American community the overall stereotyped actions of the fans themselves as well as the sugarcoating of the previously racial slur has done little to bring the two cultures together and instead created a larger disconnect between white and Native American. The name Redskin should be retired and replaced so that rather
Base on Maria Hinojosa’s view, “In Arizona, they banded the Mexican American study program in the public school. The program ended in 2012, but not without students protect.” (00:05:47). Base on the information from the radio of Latino USA, we understand how hard for the immigrations to survive with the racist issue. People come to the United State to achieve the America’s dream, which can provide for people an advance future. It is totally unfair that they shut down the program without provide any students protect. People can tell from this action that racists problems already happened in Arizona, and the new law SB1070 is actually increasing that problems become more complex. No matter where do we come from, or who we are, we have human right to treat other as respectful. By stopping people base on officers’ perceptions is already hurt people feeling and become not respectful to people. According to Jason Nier, Samuel Gaertner, Charles Nier and John Dovidio, authors of the article, “Can Racial Profiling Be Avoided Under Arizona Immigration Law? Lessons Learned From Subtle Bias Research and Anti-Discrimination Law,”
According to their own history, the Aztecs, who called themselves the Tenochca or Mexica, started as a small nomadic tribe originating from a place called Aztlan. Aztlan existed somewhere in the southern part of California or the north west of Mexico. At this time they were Nahuatl speaking. During the twelfth century they started a period of wandering and in the thirteenth century they came across Mexico's central valley. There they decided to settle.
...world would be if we didn't have soccer in the world. So you have to admit Aztecs’ brains were the best. Yes, what if you don’t want to play that game? In life you always have to go by majority even when I want to play football and there are always a lot of chances for your friends to love football and i think you would also like to play a game your friends play. So what do you think now?
There are varied accounts of the percentage of Aztec casualties due to smallpox, ranging from 33.3%-60%. The reason why the Aztecs were affected by the disease so badly is because the smallpox virus is not native to the Americas, so the Aztecs’ immune systems were not prepared for it. Official historical documents state that this might have been one of the only times in history, cleanliness worked against a civilisation. The Aztec civilization prided itself on how clean its cities were, and so disease was far less common among them than it was among the Europeans, for whom a common practice was throwing one’s own excrement out of a window and into the streets. The Aztecs thought cleanliness was important so they documented personal hygiene
Racism isn’t a subject that appears in every day conversations. Although most people try to ignore its existence, it’s quite obvious that it marked the lives of a lot of people and it has now become an essential part of our history. As a student who has lived in the valley all her life, I’ve been taught about the hardships African Americans had to endure while obtaining their freedom, becoming eligible to vote, being segregated, but never did I stop to think that the people who shared my culture and walked the streets of the Valley and San Antonio were going through a similar experience. Throughout the years it has become apparent that African Americans weren’t the only people who had been mistreated.
The Aztecs came from Azatlan which is the mythical place of origin(Aztecs of Lost Civilization). Huizilopochtli, the god of war, told the Aztecs to leave Azatlan and wander until they saw an eagle perched on a cactus growing out of a rock and eating a snake(Los Aztecas). The Aztecs traveled many years to find the legend and finally found it while at Lake Texcoco. Lake Texcoco was ruled by the Toltecs between the 10th and 11th centuries(Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia). Since many other tribes also migrated to Lake Texcoco at the same time, the Aztecs were pushed out to the westside of the lake to a swampy area. The only piece of dry land they had was a little island surrounded by marshes. Over a long period of time they built their empire with chinapas. Chinapas were formed by piling up mud from the lake bottom to make little islands(Aztec Empire History). Tenochtitlan (currently Mexico City), which means "Place of the Cactus", became the capital in 1325 and soon there came many islands in which bridges were built to connect the mainland (Los Aztecas). They also dug canals and constructed aqueducts. There were many religious structures, and they built temples and pyramids. By 1502 the Aztec Empire expanded from Guatemala to San Luis Potosi which is in Central and Southern Mexico and extended 800 miles along a northwest-southeast axis. The Aztecs conquered many cities and all became part of the empire which was wedged between high mountains and surrounded by lakes(Aztecs of Lost Civilization/ Azetc Empire History).
The next reason we’ll be looking at are the stereotypical images commonly seen in literature and mascots. Mainstream media such as “Dances with Wolves”, “The Lone Ranger”, and “The Last of The Mohicans” and mascots in professional sports teams like Washington Redskins, Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago Blackhawks all include representations of Native Americans that for some, are offensive. With this in mind, ...
Furthermore, schools shouldn’t be looked down upon for use Native Americans as a mascots. In Phil Hands cartoon informs the society of the breaking issue of racism upon the minority or also seen as the Native Americans as well, Hands origanally and specifically
