Many people while shopping do not pay attention to what they are actually buying. Many people see something in the store and put it in their buggy without checking the ingredient list. In “How to Read Food Labels and Avoid Toxic Ingredients” Miriam Levin gives us a list of ingredients and chemicals to watch out for while we are out shopping. Avoiding toxic ingredients is very simple. In order to avoid these ingredients, you need to look at the Nutrition Facts label, learn more about the company you are buying from, and learn more about what pesticides are being used on your food.
The most simple way to avoid toxic ingredients is to look at the Nutrition Facts label. The
Nutrition Facts on a package of food will tell you the serving size, the total calorie count, the
ingredients, and the percent Daily Values. From looking at the label you can learn how many
carbohydrates, trans fat, saturated fats, cholesterol, sodium, fibers, and sugars are in the food.
Nutrition Fact labels sometimes do not have all of the chemicals used in the food listed. Levin
writes, “There are preservatives that do not have to be listed.” This means that there still
might be harmful chemicals in the food you are eating. Checking the ingredient list is

crucial in knowing what is going into your food. Another way to avoid toxic chemicals and ingredients is to learn more about the company you are buying from.
Most big corporations only want to make money and sell a product; they do not care about what is going into their products. You may think a big brand you buy from is trustworthy, but you never really know for sure. In order to know what is actually going into your food, you need to research what chemicals the company is using if they’ve ever been in a big scandal when it comes to chemicals, and where the ingredients in the food are being farmed or raised. The company that makes the food you are putting into your body have the most power when it comes to putting toxic ingredients into your food, so you should always be cautious of
them. Pesticides have a very big impact on the food you are eating. Pesticides are chemicals sprayed onto plants and crops to prevent bugs and other animals eating them. Pesticides are somewhat controversial in the world today. One side sees them as a necessary substance used to control and prevent crop damage while the other side sees them as a dangerous and toxic chemical that can harm the environment and people who eat the food they are placed on. No matter which side you are on, you need to understand the dangers of eating the pesticides that are on the food. Certain pesticides can cause cancer, liver and kidney damage, and cause irritations to the skin and eyes. In order to avoid pesticides, you can grow your own food, buy locally, and wash your fruits and vegetables very carefully before eating them. Pesticides can be avoided and are as important as the actual ingredients in the food you’re eating. Avoiding toxic ingredients can become easy if you look at the Nutrition Facts label, learn more about the companies you are buying from, and learning about the pesticides used on your food. Your body is very important and you need to be careful about what you are putting into it. Feeding your body healthy foods will be worth it because a healthy body is a happy body. Avoiding toxic ingredients is an easy thing to do for a big price to pay.
chemicals are actually put in to make these foods. Moss has credibility when he mentions the
You’ll see most people do not read the labels of the food they are buying. This is because they don’t care, it takes time and people nowadays are very busy. Like Berry said, “they buy what they want-or what they have been persuaded to want-within the limits of what they can get.” People are accustomed to buying what they have been taught to buy by their parents or caretakers as they were growing up. We learn to eat what we have been given as children and we tend to follow that same pattern of eating, which, for most people, is what we can

Yes, we should be concerned about what we are eating. There are three reasons why it is important for us to be concerned and those are genetically modified foods (GMO) are harming us and the environment, fish/ animals are now being modified and chickens and cows are being kept in rough conditions. We should be concerned about the health of the animals that we are eating because if they are not consuming any healthy food, we will not get our required nutrients. In the movie Food Inc. it shows how cows are only supposed to eat grass which is essential to them however we are now feeding them corn which makes the cows bigger and fatter faster than usual but there are many things wrong with it. This could cause cows to raise the acid level, this also creates an existence for the dangerous disease E. Coli.
These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined. Nutrition experts in the United States and Canada have a list of standards with four list values. These list values are called the Dietary Reference Intakes. The DRI committee sets these values for vitamins, minerals, calories, and nutrients.
Since McDonalds is aware that people are more concerned with the healthiness of their products, they have added few items such as salads and fruits to gain a better reputation. Many high ranked officials even claim their food to be among the safest. “McDonald's is considered one of the best, if not the best, company in the United States when it comes to food safety” says Weisman. This claim, however, does not at all account for the poison...
A food label is a source of advertising a food product. Manufacturers try their best to make their product food label as attractive as possible, by using bright colours, bold text, food claims, and a lot of information. Too much information on a food label might have caused a lot of painful headaches for consumers; but it's all worth it, due to many health and nutrition problems. By law, manufacturers must abide by the standard code terms of what is put on their food label. By this, a food label must have no false claims or information, be in English and legible and easy to see. Also must contain a barcode, name of food, list of ingredients in descending order of weight, net weight, any additives in the food, country of origin, use of imported ingredients, name and address of manufacturer, date marking and nutrition panel if any claims are made.
In the book Unwind by Neal Shusterman the is a plethora of themes that occur in the book, but one of the theme that stand out to me in this book is to step out of your comfort zone. This is shown a plethora of time in the book and help some of characters keep their life. In Unwind in my opinion the strongest theme is to step out of your comfort zone. I will be showing multiple reason why this is the strongest occurring theme in Unwind.

The responsibility falls on the shoulders of the consumer to avoid products with potentially unsafe ingredients. It is difficult to know what ingredients are potentially unsafe. Is phenoxyethanol safe? It sounds terrible, but it’s a perfectly safe preservative. What about BHA and BHT? They sound ok – but they’re synthetic antioxidants that are used to extend shelf life, and
One of the questions people may ask is does a label indicate the quality of a dietary supplement product. It is difficult to determine the quality of a dietary supplement product from its label but, the degree of quality control depends on the manufacture, the supplier, and others in the production process. In 2007, the FDA issued good manufacturing practices for dietary supplements, also a set of requirements and expectations by which dietary supplements must be manufactured, and prepared and stored to ensure quality. Manufacturers are now expected to guarantee the identity, purity, strength, and composition of their dietary products. For example, the GMP‘s aim to prevent the inclusion of the wrong ingredients, not to mention the addition of too much or too little of a dietary ingredient, increases the possibility of contamination, pesticides, heavy metals such as lead, bacteria, etc., and the improper packaging and labeling of a product. Another question is are dietary supplement standardized? Standardization is a process that manufactures may use to ensure batch to batch consistency of their products. In some cases, standardization involves identifying specific chemicals known as markers that can be used to manufacture a consistent product. The standardization process can also provide a measure of quality control. Dietary supplements are not
Food is “composed of synthetic chemical additives, such as colorings, preservatives, sugar substitutes and trans-fats” (Fitzgerald, 2006, p.72). Fitzgerald reported that by the “1970s most meats and dairy products that were factory farmed were laced with growth hormones, antibiotics and a range of pesticides” (p.72). Furthermore, food that is frozen, packaged and canned is considered processed food. A brief explanation of the chemical additives in processed food. 1.
The Environmental Protection Agency addresses that “Pesticides are widely used in producing food to control pests such as insects, rodents, weeds, bacteria, mold, and fungus.”(“Food and Pesticides”). “The science and our understanding of chemical risk evolves and EPA continues to reevaluate each pesticide’s safety every 15 years.” (“Food and Pesticides”). It is not safe to have certain types of dangers in all restaurants. All restaurants everywhere should be aware of that restaurant to confirm there are no hazards in the kitchen or the building
