The avocado idea of self refers to the structure of ones humanly being and the core essence in relation to the structure of an avocado. The avocado is a fruit that is mainly composed of three parts. There is an outer durable skin, a soft mushy layer that surrounds the core, and the center core being the avocado seed. The durable exterior of an avocado symbolizes our human skin. The thick mushy layer symbolizes the human flesh and the core that is an avocado seed is the essence; used to resemble the human core of essence in the theory of self. “Looking for certainty in a single truth to explain the world has been called modernism” (Mitchell, 2015, p.133). “Many philosophers have suggested that the search for truth leads us inevitably to the realm of the aesthetic−that through art we can learn the truth about reality” (Mitchell, 2015, p.306). An example of a character that represents the avocado idea of self/ modern view of self, are the characters Joel and Clementine from the film eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. A fixed human nature that is shared by all humans in addition to reason is love. This film expresses that despite life circumstances, love is always a way to connect one human being to another, and is inevitable. In the film, the character Joel is a man who is dating a woman named Clementine. The two are completely opposite types of people, as Joel is more of a straight edge or square, and Clementine is more exciting and spontaneous. Not only do the two of them express the human essence of love, but Clementine shares the modern view of self-stereotype that females are more irrational and emotional than men. Clementine often acts on her emotions and is a bit irrational, and Joel is more level headed using logic and reason. Throughout the film the romantic relationship is shown between the two, and ultimately the sad end of the relationship. A representational piece of art that reflects postmodern view of self is the film Her. Her is a story of Theodore a man who works at a company writing professional love letters. The story develops to show Theodore developing mutual affection for Samantha who is his operating system, similar to a “Siri” or an “Alexa” in our reality. This film really expresses the question as to what reality is real. Throughout the story Samantha the operating system, begins developing feelings and describes how she is changing by feeling emotions, but is not forgetful that she is an operating system. This is an excellent example of a postmodernist view of self, because Samantha is constantly changing to become more human like even though she is not human. This raises the question for both characters because which reality is the real one? Are Samantha’s feelings real, true emotions, or are they preprogrammed for her? In conclusion both decide its best to go their separate ways and he no longer uses an operating system. “Genuine art, Schelling insisted, can be recognized because it alone depicts the unconscious in action as well as its “original identification with the conscious” (Mitchell, 2015, p.323).
