The use of ANPR
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology is used to help detect, deter and disrupt criminality at a local, force, regional and national level, including tackling travelling criminals. ANPR provides lines of enquiry and evidences in the investigations of crime and is used by forces throughout UK, Wales and Northern Ireland.
How it works
As a car or a vehicle passes an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera, its registration number is read and checked thru database records of cars. Police officers can stop a car, check it for evidence and, where necessary, make arrests. The use of ANPR in this way has proved to be important in the detection of many offences, including locating stolen cars, tackling uninsured car use and uncovering cases of major crime. It also allows officers’ attention to be drawn to offending cars whilst allowing law abiding drivers to go about their business unhindered.

We have clear rules to control access to Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) data to ensure that access is for legal investigation purposes. Staff only have access to Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) data if it is relevant to their role, and the majority of those who have permission may only do so for a maximum period of 90 days from the date it was collected. After 90 days, access may only be for serious, major or counter terrorism investigations and after 12 months only for major investigations and counter terrorism purposes.
Searches of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) data can confirm whether cars associated with a known criminal has been in the area at the time of a crime and can dramatically speed up investigations.

First of all, the initial license plate has a code is NE14NSA, which stands for “anyone for an essay”. Due to the fact Dr. Otto Mobile was the only person class related, the plate is his. Also, the plate UUD2UUNX stands for “used to use an axe”, which is Ken’s because he was related to trees. Considering the interviews show that Anita is a librarian which is the opposite of movies and it stands for “I hate movies”, IH8MOOV is Anita’s. ICU83PL88 must be Kelly’s because she is the only suspect left. Because Kelly’s plate had a yellow scratch on the back but none on the front, she must be innocent. Ken’s plate had scratches on both sides, meaning he was in the middle of two cars. Otto’s car had a scratch on the back, meaning that someone crashed into him. Considering Anita’s plate was the only plate without a scratch on the back, she was in the back of the
Although they can be easily tracked, people overlook the invasion of privacy possibility because of the convenience they bring to every day life. Systems like OnStar installed in cars have made the tracking of stolen cars practically effortless. Similar tools are being used by law enforcement, Penenberg stated “cell phones have become the digital equivalent of Hansel and Gretel’s bread crumbs” (472). He then goes on to discuss how in Britain in 1996, authorities installed 300 cameras in East London. Although this didn’t affect the terrorism, it did affect the crime rate which fell 30 percent after the cameras were put into place. Penenberg closes his essay by mentioning that the surveillance is not only used to watch the citizens but also for citizens to keep an eye on the government. Through his organization, relevant information, and professional tone, Penenberg creates an effective
As the is a very formal method for obtaining data, it is often a very cold data collection initiative in comparison to the next method used to collect data on crime, the NIBRS. An extension of the UCR, the National Incident-Based Reporting System is a system to collect and study data created from the victim and offender of a criminal act. This d...
The purpose of stop and search, an investigative tool to prevent crime is arguably different to the current practice of this procedure, current research suggests that it is used to gain intelligence and for social control (Bowling and Phillip, 2007). Following this, there is substantial evidence suggesting that thirty police forces have no understanding of how to use their powers to complete a stop and search (HMIC, 2013). Furthermore, the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (1984, c60) states that a police officer can only stop and search a citizen if they have reasonable grounds to suspect they have stolen or prohibited items on their person. However, statistical evide...
If misused, body-cameras can be a violation of privacy. In order to prevent this, proper legislation needs to be enacted in order to ensure privacy rights are protected. The only policy related document regarding police body cameras is the “Guidance for the use of body-worn cameras by law enforcement authorities” which is issued by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. This document discusses that rules should not be enforced only by local police departments, but for Canada as a whole. As this is the only document related to police body cameras, it is undoubtable that there needs to be serious legislation created. As it is suggested that body cameras pose as a risk for privacy rights, it is evident in order to implement them effectively, there needs to be regulation constructed. Body cameras can be an effective and useful tool, but without legislation, they can cause problems. Bruce Chapman, president of the Police Association of Ontario expresses, “We want to do it right. We don’t want to do it fast” when asked about the implementation of body cameras. While body cameras, are important to have in today's society, it is also dire to have it done properly. By enforcing strict guidelines, and documents addressing body camera legislation, it will ensure the process is done correctly. In order to implement body cameras properly, privacy rights need to be assessed. This process takes time, and proves body cameras need to be implemented at a pace legislation can follow. Thomas K. Bud, discusses the worry that privacy will be violated with body cameras. Factors such as facial recognition, citizen consent of recording, and violations of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms all pose as risks. While legislation has not matched their guidelines with modern technology, it proves how important it is to create new documents, in order for changes to be made. Therefore body
This can be very beneficial for the police because most of the time police investigators often struggle to solve an investigation mainly because of a lack of evidence or a lack of witnesses willing to cooperate. Although using the information using the information obtained by the street check can be helpful in a variety of ways such as putting the person of interests in the area at the time of the crime or it proves the investigator with a tiny lead which may lead to greater evidence. Many police investigators credits carding for the success in solving their investigations especially Peel Regional Police Chief Jennifer Evans who credits the arrest of Min Chen In the murder of Cecilia Zhang (Blatchford, 2015). This all started one month before Cecilia was kidnapped police had received a complaint about a suspicious car near the Credit River upon responding the officer found a car with three male occupants one of them being Min Chen they claim that they were looking for a place to go fishing and showed the officer their rods the officer was suspicious based off the fact the rods still had price tags on them and that Min lived Scarborough which is quite a distance from Mississauga however due to the fact she had no grounds for arrests the officer obtained the three men’s information and

Language has the ability to shape the way people think and interact with one another. Although not the sole determining factor in the organization of the world, it is a socially constructive tool that is fundamental to generating culture. As Kenneth M. Morrison writes in Beyond the Supernatural: Language and Religious Action, “language has a generative effect on all human activity, no matter whether language holds reality as representative or generative” (202). This is important in thinking about the power dynamics between Anglo-Europeans and Native Americans throughout history. Whites have used language to mold the dominant societal image of the Indian under a Western gaze; however, indigenous people have also harnessed the power of Western
A barcode is a visual representation of data that is checked and utilized for data. Bar code is simple to control equipment and tool inventory. In facilities supervisors can use barcodes to link work orders, purchase orders, spare parts and equipment which can be further used to track and collect cost. In barcodes historical data can be used to predict the seasonal fluctuation accurately. Barcodes are printed specifically on the paper or a plastic object, therefore actualizing a standardized identification framework is far less expensive than the RFID innovation.
They can catch multiple views of a passing car and send the video to the police department, which will review the footage and send a citation to the vehicle’s owner.” Is this enough? Just giving people

Computers are used at traffic stops. The officer can find the vehicle identification number (VIN) and calls the number in to the secretary and the secretary lets the responding officer know whether or not the vehicle belongs to the driver of the car, to make sure the vehicle isn’t stolen. If the car is stolen the officer car arrest the person right then.
There are many tracking technologies that law enforcement are using in this day and age. Using newly developed technology may help law enforcement capture criminals much faster. Also, this enables officers to respond more quickly to a crime scene. Using some of these equipment can save a person’s life with a quick response.
Data privacy issues arise in wide range of areas such as healthcare records, financial information, regarding genetic material in biology, geographical records, criminal justice and investigations and also in the use of
“Each light has a different preset wavelength designed to detect hair, fibers, and body fluids at crime scenes, these lights allow a crime scene to be processed faster and more thoroughly than ever before.” This technology is speedy and can help locate the whereabouts of criminals. The use of in-car camera systems has become very popular, especially by law enforcement. These cameras are used to record traffic stops and road violations of civilians. “From the time the first in-car cameras were installed to document roadside impaired-driving sobriety tests, the cameras have captured both intended and unintended video footage that has established their value. Most video recordings have resulted in convictions; many provide an expedited means to resolve citizen complaints, exonerate officers from accusations, and serve as police training videos.” Photo enforcement systems helps to maintain road safety by “automatically generating red light violations and/or speeding summons and as a result to greatly improve safety for the motoring public.” (Schultz,
