Autoimmune disease arises when a bodies own immune system inability to distinguish between the bodies one cells and foreign antigens. An individuals own body own immune system will attack against its own organs and tissues. The term autoimmunity was given to this inappropriate response. At first the thought that it was a result of the elemiation of self reactive lymphocytes during the development of bone marrow and the thymus. But then it was found that normal healthy individuals that had mature recirclating self reactive lymphocytes still have the possibility of having an immune reaction. The main function of the immune system is the ability to distinguish normal body constitvents from foreign substances such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, …show more content…
Autoimmune disorders involve a large group of chronic and potentially life threatening disease. The loss of the ability to determine between self and nonself can lead to serious damage to organs and tissues. Autoimmunity can be categorized an organ specific disease and non organ specific disease which is also called systemic disease. Autoimmunity effects 5% to 7% of the human population. Autoimmune disease is higher in women. It often causes chronic debilitating illeness. Organ-specific autoimmune disease the immune response is directed attack on main organs. Some examples of organ-specific autoimmunity includes multiple sclerosis, Addison’s disease, insulin-dependent diabetes, pernicious anemia, myasthenia gravis, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, primary biliary cirrhosis, pemphigus vulgaris and glomerulonephritis. Theses diseases effect the organs such as brain, pancreas, adrenal glands, thyroid, stomach, muscles, blood, liver, skin and kidneys. This effects direct cellular damage and causes an inflammatory response in the effected organs. After the cellular damage is done it is replaced by connective tissue (scar tissue) and the function of the organ declines. Non-organ …show more content…
Symptoms that may be present in an autoimmune disorder can include dizziness, muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, vision change, skin changes, temperature changes and neurological symptoms. Diagnosis of an autoimmune disorder involves documentary of autoantibody and auto reactive t cells. It can also be confirmed by a number of other direct and indirect methods. Current therapies for autoimmune disease are not cures but they aim to reduce symptoms so that someone can live an acceptable quality of life. Drugs such as steroids are immunosuppressive drugs which slow the proliferation of lymphocytes. When the immune response is slowed down it can reduce the severity of the autoimmune symptoms. The ability to diagnose the autoimmune disorder is more successful right now than the treatment strategies. The management of the disorder start with the management and control and the reduction of both pas and loss of function. They start with the correction of the deficiencies in hormones such as insulin or thyroxin caused by autoimmune damage to glands. Sometimes replacing the blood components by blood transfusion is considered. The suppression of the immune system is attempted by achieving a balance between controlling the autoimmune disorder and maintaining the body’s ability to fight disease is critical. Medication therapy for autoimmune disease can
Lupus is inflammatory disease caused when the immune system attacks its own tissues and organs, and this inflammation affects many different body parts such as the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs. Second is the Celiac disease and it is an autoimmune reaction from eating gluten, and it may lead to damage in the small intestine because this disease attacks the villi, the projections that line the small intestine for protection. The last example is Rheumatoid Arthritis, an inflammatory disorder in which affects many joints, mainly in hands and feet, and then causing your joints to painfully swell and possibly cause bone erosion.
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is also referred to as insulin-dependent as the secretion of the hormone insulin by the pancreas is reduced to minor levels due to the destruction of the pancreatic beta cells by immune system of the body. Therefore, Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition due to the fact that the body is harming the pancreas with antibodies so beta cells cannot make any insulin for bloodstream to take in glucose. The fact that the cells in the body cannot take in glucose means that it builds up in the blood and hyperglycaemia occurs. This abnormally high level of blood glucose is able to harm the nervous system, tiny blood vessels in the kidneys, heart and the eyes. Type 1 Diabetes is fatal when left untreated as it then causes heart disease, kidney disease, damage to the nerves, stroke and
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory and an autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s tissue (Rheumatoid arthritis, 2017). This disease affects the entire body, which is called a systemic (means entire body) disease. Arthritis is derived from the word part arthr-, which means “joint,” and -itis, which means “inflammation,” so altogether it means “inflammation of the joints.” It creates inflammation that causes the tissue that lines the inside of joints (synovium) to thicken. About 1.5 million people in the U.S. are affected. It affects all races, but it affects three times as many women than men (What is Rheumatoid Arthritis, n.d.). Overtime, rheumatoid arthritis causes painful swelling that can potentially result in bone erosion or joint deformity, which leads up to physical disabilities. RA can affect more than just your joints, but can spread to body systems, skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood vessels, e.t.c (Rheumatoid arthritis, 2017).
Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks healthy tissue and organs. This inflammation can damage many different bodily systems. Lupus commonly affects the joints, skin, kidneys, lungs, brain and heart. Many people with lupus have found relief for some of their chronic pain through practicing a few different styles of yoga.
Researchers think that this immune system response may be triggered by bacteria or viruses, material in the intestinal contents, or a defective signal from the body’s own cells, called an autoimmune response. Inflammation results in pain, heat, redness, and swelling of the tissue. Chronic inflammation can harm the function of tissues and organs (U.S. News, 2009). Crohn’s disease also appears to affect certain ethnic groups more than others. American Jews of European descent are four to five times more likely to de... ...
When someone has lupus they have a different outlook on life. For patients with this disease, even the easiest task can be painful to the body or joints. Lupus is not contagious. “Lupus is a disease of the immune system. The immune system protects the body from inflection”(http://lupus.webmd.com). With lupus, the immune system attacks the tissue in many parts of the body. Lupus affects women more than men(www.womenshealth.gov). There are many different types of lupus, and each symptom affect different parts of the body. With treatment you can obtain and fulfill a healthy lifestyle.
Usually your body produces antibodies to fight off invaders such as Viruses or diseases but since Lupus is an autoimmune disease; the immune system can’t tell the difference between foreign invaders and healthy tissues. There 3 types of Lupus Systemic Lupus (most common) which can affect any part of the body, Discoid Lupus which only affects the skin, and Drug induced Lup...
Lupus is mainly caused by a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental triggers. According to Magro et al., genes, environment, and genetic factors cause lupus (2013). The most affected by this condition are women compared to men. In addition, lupus affects people aged between 20- 40, although, children are said to rarely get lupus. Initially, a person diagnosed with lupus was said to die because there was no treatment. However, with the advancement in treatment and prevention methods, people with lupus can live normal lives. With proper treatment of lupus, the condition can be managed and the affected organs protected from severe damages.
There are effective prevention and controlling the disease, however, a disease still stay a vital problem. For example, for diabetes especially type 2 diabetes can be prevented with managing a lifestyle and diet pattern changes in society. Individuals who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes pancreas still works however not quite effective as it should be as the body built an insulin resistance which makes it difficult to change glucose into energy where too much glucose is left inside the blood. Managing a lifestyle pattern can modify a type 2 diabetes this includes eating a healthy diet, it is vital individual eat a healthy food such as by learning about the size of portion and counting a carbohydrate. Making a meal a well-balanced. An individual
Graves’ disease is considered an auto immune disorder. It is also a hyperthyroid disorder that leads to the over activity of the thyroid gland. Graves’ disease is a condition that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. Many people suffer from symptoms. This paper will talk about the causes of the disease, research that has been conducted and how it can be treated.
Causes of these disorders include immune-system reactions and the wear and tear of aging, while research indicates that the nervous system may often be equally involved. About one out of seven Americans exhibit some form of arthritis. INFLAMMATORY CONNECTIVE TISSUE DISEASES This varied group of diseases produces inflammation in the connective tissues, particularly in the joints. The signs of inflammation--warmth, redness, swelling, and pain--may be apparent. Microscopic examination of the lesions reveals prominent blood vessels, abnormal accumulations of white blood cells, and varying degrees of wound healing with scarring.
There are some traditional medicines that are used to help with Rheumatoid Arthritis such as a mixture of ufudu, sengaparele, and ishaba bark are boiled and then strained. The patient should drink it four times daiy to take away pain. There have been many tests done and it has been proven that in most pateints borage seed oil helps to relieve pain and swelling of joints. Blackcurrent seed oil also improves the tenderness of joints in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system. It is understood as an autoimmune disease, a condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks normal tissues. In Multiple Sclerosis, the patient’s own cells & antibodies attack the fatty myelin sheath that protects and insulates nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord, the two components of the CNS. This ultimately causes damage to the nerve cells and without the insulation the myelin sheath provides, nerve communication is disrupted. Hence, Multiple Sclerosis is characterized by symptoms that reflect central nervous system involvement (Luzzio, 2014).
One of the most common mysteries in the world is the development of autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disease is when the immune system, which usually keeps your body healthy thinks that your healthy cells are antigens and attacks them. This is irony right? It is against properties of evolution for an immune system to attack itself causing sickness and possibly death if untreated. There are about 80 different types of autoimmune diseases, which usually have periods of little to no symptoms and worsening symptoms. What particularly creates confusion in the world is the autoimmune disease, inflammatory bowel disease, which affects almost about five million people worldwide.
Experts note that an anti-inflammatory diet is very similar to the Mediterranean diet, a heart-healthy way of eating that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains. One study of more than 1.5 million healthy adults showed a marked reduction in risk of heart disease death, cancer death, and development of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. Another study, published in 2013 in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed a 30 percent reduction in heart attacks, strokes and deaths from heart disease among participants who switched to a Mediterranean diet.
