I chose to do my research on the language development of autistic infants and children. What is autism? According to medicine.net, Autism is a spectrum of neuropsychiatric disorders characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication, and unusual and repetitive behavior. Some, but not all, people with autism are non-verbal. Autism likes many conditions, have different levels of severity.

My focus is not autism prevention or treatment, but rather look for ways a parent can catch early signs that their child may be autistic. I hope to provide ways to develop an understanding of language, and correctly using verbal and non-verbal language. The child should be encouraged to interact with people, and even practice independent tasks. This will help develop the child’s social skills. Speaking to the child even if they do not respond is also a way for the child to feel connected. Many are not aware that the majority of Autistic people are very intelligent individuals. A great example is Temple Grandin, an American professor of animal science at Colorado State University, world-renowned autism spokesperson and consultant to the livestock industry on animal behavior. She is a spokesperson for autism and shares her insight on what life is like for her point of view. She links her success in life with the persistence of her parents and their encouragement of being social and educated. The most important thing is to find a way the child can communicate. Temple stresses the importance of communication, find different ways in which your child can communicate with you; whether it is though drawings, gestures, sigh language or and or simply words.
