Stress is a very common condition that everyone suffers from at some point in their life, but at different levels. Stress is more commonly found in people with autism. The term stress can be defined as “your body's way of responding to any kind of demand. It can be caused by both good and bad experiences.”(mystical.org) This definition indicates that stress is feedback from the body when it feels threatened or under pressure to a certain situation. The severity of stress is varied depending on the person and is why it can be seen in both positive and negative perspectives. Autism Bedford Shine states “While some people with autism and their families cope well with the additional challenges that autism brings, for many others the impact can be devastating” indicating that autism and stress can bring many challenges to both the family and the autistic person’s life if they do not know how to cope with stress. Stress can also bring many other effects to an autistic person's life including loneliness, lack of activities and participation, and emotional and mental problems. According to Bedford Shine, “ Parents avoid taking their children out to public places rather than face the reactions from people who do not understand the situation. This causes not only the child with autism but also their family to become housebound and isolated, which has a profound effect on their social and emotional wellbeing.” This evidence shows that autism can have many affects on one’s life if they also suffer from stress. Due to the growing awareness of autism and recent developments in technology, scientists and doctors can now discover and observe the effects of autism on society, and people. Starting with its discovery, researchers have been able to diagnose people more effectively. Doctors are beginning to discover what causes this disorder, and are currently trying to find ways to prevent and treat it. Many places have opened their doors to people with this disorder, creating autistic friendly environments where people are patient and understanding. Schools have also become accommodating to autistic children and adults. Autism also puts great strain on family and home lives.

Hans Selye defined stress as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change.” He later defined it as “the rate of wear and tear on the body.” Stress can be good because the pressure placed on someone can motivate them to complete the tasks ahead of them. From this, small amounts of stress can be positive. However, long periods of stress wear the body down and begin to have negative effects on the body which could be long term.
Stress means different things to different people and stress effects people in different ways. Some people think stress is something that happens to them such as an injury or a promotion and others think that stress is what happens to our mind, body and behaviors in response to an event. While stress does involve events and how one responds to them these are not the critical factors, but our thoughts about the situation in which we are involved are the critical factors. Essentially, stress exists whenever homeostasis is disturbed or cannot be maintained (Stress and the Social System Course Guide, 2013). Homeostasis refers to the body's ability to keep the internal chemical and physical environments constant. As your body begins to react to stress several changes occur. These changes include increased heart rate, blood pressure and secretion of stimulatory hormones. Ones body prepares itself in stressful situations to either stand ground and fight or to flee from the situation. Walter Cannon called this stressful reaction the fight-or-flight response (Greenberg, 2012).

A stressor, as defined by Potter, Perry, Stockert, and Hall (2013), is any kind of event or situation that a person encounters in their environment that requires him or her to change and adapt. When a person responds to stress, his or her coping mechanisms and actions are individualized. No two people are going to handle stressful situations and cope with experiences the same exact way.
