Children raised by authoritative parents also show a lower amount of behavioral issues (Abar & Winsler). In 2015, a pediatric dentist completed a study to determine which of the parenting styles created better behaved children. The study consisted of dental work on children and parents completing a survey in which discovers the parent’s different parenting styles. At the end of the study, they discovered that children who are raised by authoritative parents had better behavior. These children showed more positive behavior such as “happier dispositions, greater emotional control and regulation, and improved social skills” during the appointment (Howenstein, et al, 2015). This study proves that authoritative parents shape their children to be better behaved than those who are raised in permissive or authoritarian environments.

Authoritative parents set clear expectations and explanations for what they expect from their children. This idea has been studied on middle and high schoolers to understand why this is true. These children have revealed that they have been exposed by their parents to more techniques that reduce the likelihood that these substances will be used. These techniques include parents talking to their kids about the substances and setting expectations about practicing abstinence (Lee, n.d.). Another study was completed by Bingham Young University to compare parenting and alcohol usage. In this study of 5,000 Americans age 12 to 19, they found that children raised in “authoritative households were half as likely as teens from authoritarian households to binge drink” (Lee, n.d.). Authoritative parenting has been proven to lessen the likelihood of students indulging in these illegal activities because of the clear expectations set to them which is important to the well-being of
Children aren’t old enough to recognize peer pressure and are easy to persuade. Kids could experience peer pressure walking home from school and become influenced to steal, fight, or commit small crimes: throwing rocks into someone’s window, trespassing, or kicking neighbor’s cars and causing damage. Being peer pressured gives rise to drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and sexual activity. Without knowing the effects of drugs, kids can overdose or even lose their mind. If the drug the kid takes help them relieve the feeling of abandonment or other possible effects from lack of parental involvement, there is a strong possibility the kid will become addicted. Alcohol is easy to locate to kids who have older siblings or older neighbors despite their age. The amount of peer pressure to consume alcohol can sometimes be more challenging than to smoke cigarettes. Most kids are introduced to the DARE program at school, which is mainly for saying no to drugs but doesn’t focus on alcohol as much. Another possibility for alcohol becoming hard for kids to avoid is the known effects. Some parents educate kids on how bad smoking is and when kids watch television they see the effects of smoking from elders placing microphones to their necks to talk. However, ads about the effects of the consumption of alcohol is not shown as much on television. Children who don’t have parents at home all
A parent is not only the loving mother who holds you close to her for nine months and then many years, or the dad who plays baseball with you and intimidates his daughter’s dates. It is someone who is there for you from the start, guiding you to the right path of knowledge and teaching you how to stay on the right path independently. A parent does not need to have any biological associations to the child in order to be a parent to them. A parent must have certain characteristics to be rightfully called a parent. For many years psychologists have defined ways to correctly support a child to adulthood for parents all over the world. Some people conclude their practice of parenting their children after the child reaches the age of 18, and some have the duty as a lifelong job. As years pass so do generations and media changes very constantly and plays a factor in how children act and respond to certain stimuli. There was a study done in 2009 and people in Poughkeepsie had answered a poll that revealed overall every age group finds it harder to raise a child in today’s day and age than it had been in previous generations, but the older the parent is, the longer the generation gap would be and that factors in the difficulty of understanding how media works with a child’s psychological set up. What a child watches on a television screen is what the child will imitate through behavior. However, parenting is not a book written by a doctor, parenting is having a family, and creating memories, also ensuring that your children live in a nourishing environment for their emotional, mental, and physical health. The accepted goal of a parent is to ensure that their child or children grow to be mature and able to both support themselves and a f...
Authoritative style remains high in all four domains. Authoritative parents’ use of appropriate discipline such as using time-out or mild punishment ensures their children’s independence along with children’s compliance with parental demands. Compare to children with any other parenting styles, children raised by authoritative parents have higher self-esteem, self confidence, and better grades in elementary school, high school, and college. They are also less likely to abuse alcohol or tobacco as adolescents. In general, children of the authoritative parenting style show more altruistic
Diana Baumrind, a developmental psychologist, developed three different parenting styles with variations in warmth and responsiveness. These parenting styles, authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative, affect the development of children and adults. The authoritarian and permissive styles focus on expected levels of obedience from children. The authoritarian style provides a rigid set of rules for children to abide by and reduces their ability to develop independence (Baumrind, 1966). Baumrind (1966) describes the permissive style as a parent with little expectations and a high level of warmth. Children raised by permissive parents may develop expectations of themselves due to the lack of control from their parents. Finally, the authoritative
(Black.1982) An adolescent’s home and family are their primary source of the concepts of what is considered acceptable for drinking. Therefore, it is hardly surprising, that children follow their parents’ example.
Yanira was brought up different than most American children because by the Age of six she was working. She went along with a group of people and spent five days on the river with them. She did many tasks such as sweeping the sand off of the peoples sleeping mats, cooked and served the food to the other people. She is off working and helping with not even being asked, while in America children are being begged to do tasks and sometimes they don’t even complete them. In America there are a lot of children that will not do chores unless they are asked too (Kolbert). I remember when I was little my parents would give me chores to do and I always tried to push them off to the last minute because I didn’t want to do them. I also never did chores without being asked I always felt like I was busy and had other things to do.
There are many approaches to parenting and everyone has their own preferences as to what they think is best. In a fast paced rush around society, it is hard to know what the best choices are for your children. There is a struggle to balance what needs to be done with what can be done, and this has negative and positive feedback on the children. Parents play a critical role in shaping and guiding their children into functional confident adults. An effective parent will learn as they teach in order to grow into understanding with their children.
With over three hundred million Americans and over six billion people worldwide parenting skills are essential to maintain a healthy society. Parenting involves many aspects and requires many skills. It is a time to nurture, instruct, and correct to develop fundamental skills children will need to be mature, responsible, and contributing adults to a society. There are four commonly identified parenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. Of the four parenting styles, two remain on opposite ends of the parenting spectrum. These two styles; authoritarian, and permissive both have deleterious results that are often visible throughout different developmental stages, such as rebellious behavior. As well each style has its own advantages such as; acceptance by peers with commonality. Child rearing for most parents is an evolving set of skills. It could be said that, with any style of parenting, there is no explicit set of rules for every situation, and what works for one child may not be effective for another.

Alcohol, marijuana, and other drug use among children and adolescents is a major public concern. Recent research on middle and senior high school students showed a reversal of previous declines in smoking marijuana and using drugs other than marijuana, a decline in students' personal disapproval of marijuana, and a high prevalence of alcohol use (Johnston, O'Malley, and Bachman 1996; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 1996). Concern over this trend surfaced in the popular press, resulting in calls for measures to prevent teen drug use (Christian Science Monitor 1996; Friend 1996; Johnson 1996).
Parenting styles are as diverse as parents themselves. Parenting is one of the most challenging and difficult responsibilities a person can face. The way a family is structured is called the parenting style. Parenting styles are collections of parental attitudes, practices, and non-verbal expressions that characterize the nature of parent-child relationships. Because individuals learn how to parent from many different examples including their own parents, role models, society and life experiences. Parenting techniques can vary greatly from household to household, however, experts believe that parenting styles can be broken down into four main categories which include permissive, authoritarian, authoritative, and neglectful.
Each different parenting style each comes with pros and cons. In regards to parenting, there is never a wrong or right answer because every child and circumstances are different when it comes to the importance of the positive and negative effects. But each style comes with its effects on children. A few pros about Authoritarian parents are that their...
More Children who had authoritarian parents experienced depression that Children whose parents had another parenting style. Depression is a prolonged state of feeling sad and is positively related to alcohol problems. In this study found that depression is positively related to alcohol problems. The woman that had an authoritarian parent, who did not provide affection with love, attention for them, often suffered from depression. These women tend to suffer more depression and stress linked to alcohol problems. In addition, problems related to poor child care practices of their parents is positively related to depression in children, and adolescents among 15 to 19 years old had more problems with depression and anxiety when they had child poor
The research done for this study specifically focuses on smoking, underage drinking, and sex. Poor parenting practices, high levels of conflict in the family and a low degree of bonding between children and parents appear to increase risk for problem behavior including the abuse of alcohol, and other drugs (Farrell & White 1998). “Generally gateway models show that youth are likely to start with beer and cigarettes, later try marijuana still later use upper, and only then move onto drugs such as downers, PCP, or heroin” ((Farrell & White 1998) Oetting & Beauvais, 1987). Drugs are a common form of peer pressure as stated before it begins with cigarettes then develops to more harmful drugs. “ In addition, transitions to increased levels of smoking have been linked to friends’ encouragement and approval, and the message conveyed that smoking promoted popularity” ( Kobus,
Parents and their parenting style play an important role in the development of their child. In fact, many child experts suggest that parenting style can affect a child’s social, cognitive, and psychological development which influence not just their childhood years, but it will also extend throughout their adult life. This is because a child’s development takes place through a number of stimuli, interaction, and exchanges that surround him or her. And since parents are generally a fixed presence in a child’s life, they will likely have a significant part on the child’s positive or negative development (Gur 25).
