Governor Austin Peay Austin Peay was a Clarksvillian who made positive contributes through his political activism and leadership. Austin Peay has accomplished a lot in his life time. He had his own law firm, was elected into the Tennessee House and was also the Governor of Tennessee. On June 1, 1876 in Christian County, Kentucky Austin Peay was born. He was the son of former confederate cavalryman Austin Peay Sr. and Cornelia Leavell Peay. Peay attended college at Washington and Lee in Virginia. After attending Washington and Lee for a while he finally made the decision that he wanted to move closer to home. After getting married to his wife Peay then welcomed two children into the world a boy named Austin and a girl named Amaryllis. While enjoying his children Peay work at his law firm for 6 years. In 1901 Peay took the next step in his career where he became elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives. Once elected into the Tennessee house Peay then began to represent Montgomery County. After serving two terms in the Tennessee House Peay then became chairman of the Democratic State Executive. With Peay entering his thirties, he made the decision to go back to his law practice in Montgomery County. When returning to his law practice he began to notice how big the company has grown financially. After realizing how good the company was financially he decided to run for governor in 1918. After losing the election in 1918 Peay decided to not run again in 1920. In 1922 Peay started to realize that the State of Tennessee was not doing so well financially. After realizing the situation that the State of Tennessee was in he then decided to run for governor and he argued that there need to be more schools built, the tax reform, the long delay of highway systems and most important the length of public school terms. He was an exciting historical figure and war hero who was involved with much of the early development of our country and Texas. Bond’s case went all the way to supreme court, fighting for his rightful chair. The supreme court ruled that legislation must seat him, and that they were being unconstitutional. “‘Not everyone has shook Julian’s hand and welcomed him to the House,’ said State Representative Ben Brown, a Negro and long-time friend of Mr. Bond, ‘but several have and nobody is causing him any trouble.
