What is Aurora?
Aurora, the northern light, is a collision between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth 's atmosphere which is predominantly seen in the high attitude area like Antarctic or Alaska region. Aurora usually appears in many colours while pale green and pink are the most common colours. Shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet have been reported. The lights also appear in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow.
Aurora is also called ‘Polar Light’ since polar means the area near the Arctic or Antarctic Circles and Aurora usually appears in those areas. In addition, the polar light is also called Arsarnerit in Greenland, which can be translated as ‘playing balls’ or ‘children born too early’ and the origin behind this word is quite interesting. People in Greenland used to think that if they whistle while staring at aurora, the aurora comes close to them and if they bark hardly like dogs, the aurora disappears. It is also explained that the aurora appears on the sky when the dead souls are playing ball with walrus skulls. There are several interesting old myths because of aurora’s unique and mysterious look and people back then didn’t have any knowledge behind aurora. In ancient times, lots of people were very afraid of the polar light so it was common that they never let children outside during dark night and giant light flames of the polar light spread across the sky. If they didn’t, they thought the light would swoop down and grab the children’s heads for ball playing.

Lightning is a natural electric force that I chose. The cause of lightning requires to types of charges negative and positive. A storm cloud is divided into two parts top being being positive and the bottom being negative. The reason for lighting to happen is because of this thing called charge separation which one positive charge and one negative charge split in half. Up to millions of water droplets are contained in one storm cloud. Water from the ground evaporates, and rises from the ground and goes up to the cloud rises up and comes together as it goes up to the cloud. The clouds collides with the moisture and then go up into the cloud. When they hit, the electrons get taken off the droplets, making the negative electrons turn into a positive electron. The moisture will always look for cold temperatures at a higher altitude. At a cold temperature the water will freeze. The particles then come together and form a region that’s inside the water. The frozen portion of the water of moisture becomes negatively charged and the outer droplets which gives it a more positive charge. The currents inside the cloud rip the protons off the droplets and move them inside the cloud and goes to the positive side. The frozen particles which contain the negative charges are then moved to the bottom half. Making the clouds polarized. The mechanism is what causes the polarization of the storm clouds. A storm cloud becomes polarized when one positive charge moved to the top of the clouds and one negative charges moving towards the bottom of the cloud.
To many outsiders the Arctic is pictured as a deserted, blank piece of land with no life. Little did they know that the Arctic Region is actually inhabited by many native Alaskan groups, and that still to this day continue practicing their subsistence lifestyle.
