In the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, there are many characters who display acts of hero. However, one character that stands out as a true hero is Atticus Finch. What is a hero, you might ask? Well, a hero is someone who is brave with courage who will put their life at risk to help others. Hero’s are greatly admired and have many achievements. Throughout this novel, Atticus consistently demonstrates qualities that make him a hero in the eyes of both his children, and the reader. Atticus Finch was a small-town lawyer based in the 1930’s who defended a black man by the name of Tom Robinson. Atticus stands firm in his belief that all individuals deserve equal respect and treatment under the law. He believes that everyone should have an equal court, no matter what race they are. There are many ways that Atticus proves this statement in the novel. In chapter 20, Atticus states,“Our courts have our faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal.”(Lee 274) This was an outstanding statement made by Atticus that showed his dedication to an equal trial. Atticus made it very obvious that this trial was important to him. He tried his best, and did all he could to convince the jury to do what was right. After putting all his hard work, and dedication into helping Tom Robinson, Atticus asks in chapter 20,”In the name of God, do your duty.” This simply proves Atticus's solicitousness towards Tom. In conclusion, Atticus Finch expresses the qualities of a hero in "To Kill a Mockingbird" through his constant commitment to justice, his role as a mentor and father figure to his children, and his courageous stand against prejudice and
