How Does Atticus Show Patience In To Kill A Mockingbird

Bob Riley once said “Hard times don't create heroes, it is during the hard times when the ‘hero’ within us is revealed.” Author Lee shows the thoughts and feelings of each character carefully. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the character Atticus Finch represents Lee’s idea of social justice by demonstrating patience, wisdom and sympathy.

“A moment of patience in a moment of anger saves a thousand moments of regret (Unknown).”Atticus is a very patient person, he's respectful, intelligent and nonchalant. He gives everybody the same amount of respect, no matter the gender, race or age, and no matter the person he knows them to be. “... Atticus was leaving the post office when Mr. Ewell approached him, cursed him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him---Miss Stephanie said Atticus didn’t bat an eye just took out his handkerchief and wiped his face...”(Lee, 291). Atticus character is very patient and understanding person, he knows Mr. Ewell has problems and he doesn't react with violence because any other person would have. Violence is not always the key to every situation sometimes silence is your best come back.

Atticus is a very wise person, he's smart, outgoing and knows right from wrong he treats all human beings fair and with respect.

"There's something in our world that makes men lose their heads—they couldn't be fair if they tried. In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life” (Lee ,223). Atticus told the jury thus quote. In tough situations Atticus always has great judgement. No matter the color, Harper Lee shows Atticus's character to be the most responsible out of most, he's also one of the most important characters in the book and is greatly talked about throughout the

book.

They're ugly, but those are the facts of life.” In the walls of the court Atticus shows sympathy, he had sympathy for Tom Robinson because what Mayella did was truly wrong, she used the fact that she's simply a white female going against a black male that she knew she was to win the case against Tom. Despite the towns feelings towards Atticus Finch (A white man) defending Tom Robinson (A black man) Atticus still took the case. Atticus said “... Every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally”(Lee, 101). What he’s trying to say is that this is the ‘case’ that affects him personally and even though it does that he will still take the case because that's the type of person he is. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the character Atticus Finch represents Lee’s idea of social justice by demonstrating patience, wisdom and sympathy.
To Kill a Mockingbird was based on Harper Lee’s childhood and events in it, she introduces us to the life back then, the life she had to face and deal with. Throughout the book she shows us the patience, wisdom, and sympathy the main character Atticus shows. She gives us detail by detail the strange events of her past. Atticus Finch demonstrates intelligence by simply being himself through the entire book and not letting the thoughts of others affect him.
