Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is a recurring skin condition that is characterized by inflammation and itching of the skin. In Atopic dermatitis, which can also be referred to as atopic eczema the patient has signs of redness and scaly skin. It is often accompanied by asthma and hay fever, but not always. Approximately thirty percent of children who have eczema will develop asthma later in life. Most people who develop eczema will have an outbreak before the age of two. It is estimated that only ten percent of people diagnosed with eczema are diagnosed after the age of five. It is important for eczema to be diagnosed early to prevent the recurrence of future outbreaks. Seeking treatment early can decrease sleep disturbances, scarring, discomfort, and skin infections.
The cause of atopic dermatitis may be the result of a genetic defect in the filaggrin protein. This defect is thought to disrupt the normal function of the epidermis and allow immune cells and antigens from the outside into the dermis. The result is itching and inflammation, which only further disrupts the barrier of the skin.

When eczema is considered to be acute there are signs of oozing and crusting lesions. The second type of eczema is sub-acute atopic dermatitis and is marked by the appearance of dry, scaly, red bumps. The third category is chronic atopic dermatitis and the skin appears thick and leathery due to continuous scratching. These symptoms are commonly found on the face, hands, neck, and feet. In order to be diagnosed with eczema a patient must have at least three of the following symptoms: a previous history of asthma or hay fever, recurrent itchy or dry skin, a history of generalized dry skin, a rash present before the age of two, and recurrent
The autoimmune process that causes pathogenicity is the formation and activation of antibodies targeting the keratinocyte desmosomal cadherins or for simplicity desmosomes. The latter is responsible for the adherence of keratinocytes, and when it is targeted by these antibodies the desmosomes lose their ability to maintain keratinocytes together and the cells become detached. “Ultrastructural studies of pemphigus lesions have suggested that dissolution of desmosomes may result in the formation of blisters. This is a phenomenon known as acantholysis.” (Loannides, Lazaridou, Rigopolous, 2008)
From 1997 to 2008 the number of American children that have some form of nut allergy has tripled. Peanut allergies are considered one of “Big 8” food allergies that accounts for 90% of allergies which includes 3 million Americans out of the 21 million Americans that suffer from some form of allergy. Less than 21% of those individuals with peanut allergies will outgrow it. Peanut allergies account for the most common food related deaths. Four out of every 100 children have some form of food allergy. If an allergy is going to surface it will effect a child between 12 and 14 months of age this is why child care environments are the most vulnerable. Peanut allergies affect about 5% within this age group. I was surprised with the various names and different items that peanuts can be found in. Peanut
If having dry skin isn’t bad enough, witnessing it in front of you get into clumps and morphing into a patch of dry skin most be the worst. Ichtyosis Vulgaris (or also called fish scale disease) is a skin disorder that is passed down the family line that leads to dry, scaly skin. Ichtyosis Vulgaris is one type of skin disorder that is very common. You are born with this skin disease which it is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. This type of skin disease is not life threating at all but there really isn’t a way to cure it at you just have to go on living with it. They symptoms of Ichtyosis Vulgaris are: dry skin, scaly skin, mild itching of the skin, and maybe some skin thickening. With time the dry skin can actually begin to bunch up together and start to create patches on your skin covering large areas of your body such as the back, arms, and legs. Unless spotted at a young age most cases of Ichtyosis Vulgaris go undiagnosed due people thinking that it is only “dry skin”
Erythema multiform (EM), originally described by von Hebra in 1866, was part of the differential diagnosis in both cases but was excluded because of the "character of skin lesions, the lack of subjective symptoms, the prolonged high fever, and the terminal heavy crusting." Despite the presence of leukopenia in both cases, Stevens and Johnson in their initial report suspected an infectious disease of unknown etiology as the cause (Hazin, Ibrahimi, Hazin & Kimyai-Asadi, 2008).
What are these red patches of skin on my body that I can’t ever help from scratching? It is eczema, which is defined as a medical condition in which patches of skin become inflamed, with blisters that cause itching and bleeding. Genetics take a role in the possibility of having eczema, after comes the diagnosis, then being prescribed the treatment needed, and lastly their prognosis.
Other lesions, such as eczema, body lice, insect bites, fungal infections, poison ivy, and various forms of dermatitis can make a person susceptible to this infection.... ... middle of paper ... ... The New York Times.
There are 5 main types of psoriasis and they are: plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular, and erythrodermic. The type of psoriasis is diagnosed based on the appearance and can be confirmed with either skin biopsy or the patient’s medical history. Skin biopsy involves the removal of the patient’s skin sample to be analyzed under a microscope and base on the appearance to determine the type of skin disease the patient has. Psoriasis tends to occur within families that have it. Plaque psoriasis or psoriasis vulgaris is the most common type of psoriasis and is responsible for 80% of all patients with psoriasis. Young and middle aged adults are most affected by this type of psoriasis. People with plaque psoriasis experience raised red scaly lesions on their body that tend to itch and crack to bleed. These patches are generally known to appear on the knees, elbows, scalp, and the back but they may appear anywhere on the skin. Around 10 to 20 percent of patients with plaque psoriasis will develop psoriatic arthritis in their life time. Guttate psoriasis usually target people younger than 30 years...
The symptoms of psoriasis differ from type to type, although inflamed, scaly lesions are present in all five types. The most common form of the disease, plaque psoriasis, is identified by small bumps that begin to grow and become scaly. These lesions flake easily, but removing these patches can cause the tender skin below to bleed. In the Guttate type, small, individual, red drops form. This type does not have as much scaling as plaque psoriasis. The drops usually clear up on their own, but may also reappear as a different form of psoriasis, usually plaque. Inverse psoriasis usually occurs in places where the skin folds, such as the genitals, breasts, armpits or the backs of knees. This type will appear red, yet it will be smooth and dry. Also, no scaling will occur. Pustular psoriasis is a type that's significantly more rare. It is also more painful. In this type, blisters filled with non-infectious pus appear within a few hours and then dry up and peel within another two days. Severe medical risks exist for those who have this particular form of psoriasis, due to its side effects; exhaustion, anemia, weight loss, fever, chills, rapid pulse rate, severe itching and muscle weakness. Even less common than pustular psoriasis is erythrodermic psoriasis. This type is...
Furthermore, gluten causes the formation of antibodies that, in turn, cause the secretion of inflammatory chemicals that cause those itchy, scaly patches to develop.
These dust mites, as well as their excrement, is the biggest inducer of health problems among people. The excrement of the dust mites is a protein that can drastically raise our antibodies if it gets in touch with the skin or if it is inhaled. The bad thing is that when the antibodies are raised, the body releases histamine. Histamine levels are what causes redness and all the allergies.
In 2002, There was a horrible illness which is called severe acute respiratory syndrome, the abbreviation is SARS. SARS is a horrible disease which spreads fast. However, during the time, people post some fake news online and says vinegar and Isatis root are good for the illness. Therefore, people start to become crazy and buy those things but those are not good for the disease. One more example of myself experience. Recently, I have come down with a case of eczema, something I had never experienced before. My aunt read about a cure for eczema online that said that I should wash with hot water because hot water stimulates blood flow and dissipates the eczema. To my dismay, the eczema spread all over my body and I suffered horribly. I had to
Most doctor do not know much about Systemic Mastocytosis and if they do it is only a little bit. After a while the doctors wanted to keep a close eye on me and my siblings. My brother and I only showed signs of the disease. However, my brother was growing out of the disease and signs of the disease like most kids, who show signs of SM. I on the other hand was not. I have one major sign of SM, which is Dermatographia. Dermatographia is a condition in which lightly scratching your skin causes raised, red lines where you’ve scratches, which is basically hives. But this is not limited to scratches. You could be scratched, hit, or, this has happened to me before, I sat a really cold hold and developed hives. The hives to go way by the time 30 minutes past. Although I do show signs of SM I have not be officially diagnosed. My dog just so happened to have a tumor in her leg. When the vet sent it in to be tested, they found that it was mast cells. My dog has staged two cancer and the same disease as my dad, what is the
Patients who usually have allergies suffer from many symptoms due to the allergic reaction(s). Normally, your immune system protects you against invading agents such as bacteria and viruses. Otherwise harmless allergens (allergy-producing substances) cause your body to react as if they were dangerous invaders. In effect, your immune system is responding to a false alarm.
Whether you hide out in your house, allergies will always find you. Allergies present a number of health problems for people, including respiratory issues, itchiness, watery eyes, and general discomfort. When you couple some budding flowers with a good “spring cleaning”, you end up having a recipe for allergy disaster.
Eczema is one example of a dry skin condition. An eczema sufferer will have cracked skin, redness and inflammation.
