Atopic Dermatitis
A mother spends the night in the hospital with her six month old for observation. After
an exhausting two days they return home. The mother begins to notice a tumid rash
appearing on the child’s legs. Not knowing what to do or what was to be the cause she
proceeds to take the child to doctor visits continuously to get relief from the irritation. The
rash disappears for a moment after trying numerous treatments but then reappears. Tired and
frustrated, the mother asks the child’s physician if she would refer the tot to the dermatologist.
Finally there may be a gleam of hope. The mother follows through with the appointment only to
be told that the child has a hereditary skin allergy known as Atopic Dermatitis. It is a very
common, chronic skin disease that is also known as a skin allergy or sensitivity. The disease is a
scaling, excessively dry, red rash that itches intensely. Red patches consume much of the skins
surface and in the creases it may crack and bleed. The word “dermatitis” refers to inflammation
of skin, and “atopic” means that it is hereditary, running in the family, and is run close together.
This disorder is not life threatening and is not contagious. Without the proper treatment this
incredibly, irritating itch will only progress and can cause much distress in one’s life.
The true cause of this disease is still yet to be determined. Although health providers
don’t know what is to blame; they have helped find ways to control the skin problem. The
environment, as well as many types of detergents, soaps, and harsh weather is what they believe
contribute to the outbreak. Food allergens are major provocation factors. Researchers have
come to the conclusion that gen...

have a rash that pops out of nowhere and doesn’t go away with simple treatment, simply see the
doctor. The least you can be told is that it must have been something simple that you came into
contact with and never have to worry about again. Distinctively there is an outside difference for
those who have this allergy, although on the inside we have the same chemical make up for the
most part. You may catch a noticeable glare from time to time. Just keep in thought that people
are more curious and that they would benefit from knowledge more than a hateful insult. This
disease is mostly a discomfort and can be lessened with the proper treatment.

Mrs. Farrington was constantly worrying about allowing him out of the house or be with other kids. The hospital constantly kept correcting this behavior by stating that she needs to allow him to be like other kids but sometimes it was her first instinct to prevent hospitalization. Mainly Cody is hospitalized due to weight loss or to clean mucus out of his lungs completely. Unlike Mrs. Farrington who has to deal with the medical treatments daily, her husband is in more denial. When Cody becomes sick he understands to call the hospital but Mr. Farrington has no understanding of Cody’s medicine and such. Though studies have shown that children who are cared by their mother recover faster and are discharged earlier, Mr. Farrington behavior is very concerning (Family-Centered Care and the Pediatrician’s Role, 692). He avoids the topic overall by working constantly. Mrs. Farrington finds this behavior to be strange because if something negative happened to her, Mr. Farrington needs to know these treatments, so they aren’t neglected or performed incorrectly. However, this arrangement between the parents is not very healthy because the stress of Cody condition is completely Mrs. Farrington burden. This makes Mrs. Farrington struggle giving her other children the fair attention they deserve as
What are these red patches of skin on my body that I can’t ever help from scratching? Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that affects 125 million people world wide according to the World Psoriasis Day consortium. What causes psoriasis is unknown, but many doctors and researches believe that genetics and environmental factors trigger a hyperactive reaction of the immune system. This response then causes skin cells to multiply and mature rapidly, therefore causing the skin cells to buildup on top of each other and then eventually become red, scaly, itchy, and thick patches on skin. Even though this disease is the most common auto-immune disease in the world, there is no cure for it. Psoriasis can lead to other problems depending on the severity of the disease, however, this chronic disease has several treatment options in order to prevent further damage. Although there is no cure for psoriasis, understanding how it begins, recognizing the symptoms, and learning about treatment options can enhance the quality of life for a person diagnosed with psoriasis.

The symptoms of psoriasis differ from type to type, although inflamed, scaly lesions are present in all five types. The most common form of the disease, plaque psoriasis, is identified by small bumps that begin to grow and become scaly. These lesions flake easily, but removing these patches can cause the tender skin below to bleed. In the Guttate type, small, individual, red drops form. This type does not have as much scaling as plaque psoriasis. The drops usually clear up on their own, but may also reappear as a different form of psoriasis, usually plaque. Inverse psoriasis usually occurs in places where the skin folds, such as the genitals, breasts, armpits or the backs of knees. This type will appear red, yet it will be smooth and dry. Also, no scaling will occur. Pustular psoriasis is a type that's significantly more rare. It is also more painful. In this type, blisters filled with non-infectious pus appear within a few hours and then dry up and peel within another two days. Severe medical risks exist for those who have this particular form of psoriasis, due to its side effects; exhaustion, anemia, weight loss, fever, chills, rapid pulse rate, severe itching and muscle weakness. Even less common than pustular psoriasis is erythrodermic psoriasis. This type is...
Her 12-year-old son's only way to communicate was through text messages. She could tell through the change in his behavior when the nurse was near him that something was wrong, even though he could not come out and tell her.
Patients who usually have allergies suffer from many symptoms due to the allergic reaction(s). Normally, your immune system protects you against invading agents such as bacteria and viruses. Otherwise harmless allergens (allergy-producing substances) cause your body to react as if they were dangerous invaders. In effect, your immune system is responding to a false alarm.
