1. My cognitive score was a 2.0. I really don’t think about what I can achieve when entering into a new culture. Maybe it’s because growing up the military; I have been to different places and respect what the culture has to offer. Like any place I can sense when something isn’t right or wrong. Just have to be aware of the surroundings and respect the culture. Next my physical score is a three, I wouldn’t change my body language if I’m in a different culture , but at the same I have to respect my surroundings and reassure I’m not doing anything disrespectful to offend. Finally my highest score was 4.6 the emotional /motivational .Growing up army and being the army myself I have the confidence to deal with other cultures and be friends of people from different backgrounds. Individualism is used to show how Walmart is family and community oriented. This example falls under the corporation on the web page. They example of collectivism by showing pictures of employees in shareholder meetings and how to take care of their employees. Showing how they are taking care of the employees and how they can invest in Walmart Company. This follows under in the corporations, and its share its Walmart history, Community Giving and Global responsibility to name a few. The Walmart balances Individualism/collectivism to be part of the Walmart or just letting customers know how they are caring for the community surrounding them. (Ronald B Alder, 2013, p. 44)
B. Power Distance is used a lot in the Walmart webpage. Walmart is the largest retailer in the world right now. Power Distance is shown on the webpage under Corporate and Global responsibility .Walmart has pictures showing how they can preserve the community wherever they have a store in that part of the world. A prior market firm used by Wal-mart (GSD&M) warned Wal-mart of the public image issues they were facing and had not addressed, even though they had been advised of them for over two years. GSD&M wrote in one review to the company that “sadly, after two years of empty rhetoric and ineffective publicity stunts, we now know that Wal-Mart has not only needlessly hurt its Associates and their families, but has pointlessly hurt the image and success that Sam Walton built.” (wakeupWalMart.com, 2007). Wal-mart has acted in a manner that blends with the theory of egoism. This theory “sets as its goal the benefit, pleasure, or greatest good of the oneself alone.” (wofford.edu, 1997). “Egoist use personal advantage…as the standard for measuring an action’s rightness.” (Shaw, 2008, p. 45). Clearly Wal-mart today is acting with interests geared toward their personal advantage and not considering the wreckage it is leaving all around them.
The word collectivism often makes people cringe. Overall, there is a general fear of not being able to make personal decisions in America. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, collectivism can be defined as; emphasis on collective rather than individual action or identity (“Collectivism”). In Anthem, Ayn Rand describes an extreme collectivist society. Although Anthem’s society seems extremely surreal, aspects of its collectivist society closely mirror today’s society.
After taking the cultural intelligence pre-test my initial score was 96. I think I did rather well considering that I work in a very diverse workplace and communicate with many different people of different cultures. I was always taught that when interacting with a different culture that does not understand English, to talk so, ask them if they understand, try to explain things in short ways and use pictures if needed. I think I use a lot of these skills already which helped me have more confidence in answering these questions. I found I did rather well in being confident in interacting with different cultures and am conscious of the cultural knowledge when interacting with people of different cultural backgrounds. The Cultural Intelligence Difference was written by David Livermore, Ph.D. and published by AMACOM in 2011. After reading the book, I have found that the most important indicator of my ability to achieve success in today’s interconnected, globalized world is my cultural intelligence. Cultural intelligence can give me the ability to understand different perspectives and adjust my behaviors accordingly. According to Dr. Livermore, cultural intelligence can be defined as the ability to function effectively in a variety of cultural contexts, including: national, ethnic, organizational, and generational. By reading this book I can improve my understanding of cultural intelligence (Livermore, 2011). This paper will discuss my understanding of CQ drive, CQ knowledge, CQ strategy, CQ action, how I can improve my scores in these categories, my cultural prejudices, and my cultural ignorance’s.
In truth, and overall, I cannot say that I am very satisfied with my improvements to my ASL this semester. I think I had high expectations coming into the semester, and they were difficult in being realized. One biggest area that needs improvement is the fluency in my signing, especially concerning English mouthing. I am obviously not at all satisfied in this area. This area is one of a great mystery to me, because I have not had that much issues with English mouthing in ASL I. For example, in VJ#3 for ASL I, I did not mouth many words. I guess picking up this habit this semester or maybe not addressing the formation of this habit and being able to ignore it was due to the increase in difficulty and complexity of what was required in ASL II. Additionally, it could be because the videos for this class were done with a partner while the video journals for ASL were done by myself. I think that having an additional person, having to coordinate what we are siging, as well as having much longer notes and requirements made me have to think a lot to produce my sings. They were not the simple, “I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters” kinds of sentences. I tend to mouth more when I have to think about what I have to say. This issue is most evident in my first video journal for ASL II, where I literally mouth every word. Although it got a bit better for the second one, the habit and issue still persists as evidenced my the feedback I received from the professor. I think what hindered my improvement was actually lack of practice. Not just lack of practice, but specifically lack of practice signing with other students about topics that were not precisely covered in class. Individualism outlines the link between the ‘individual and the collectivity which prevails in a given society’ (Hofstede, 1980: 213). The main distinction amongst individualism and collectivism is the way that people of various cultures classify themselves (Di Cesare and Sadri, 2002). They recognize themselves as either an individual or a member of a group. Individualism is the extent in which societies look after themselves and their immediate family while in collectivist societies, individuals belong to groups that tend to them in exchange for wholehearted allegiance (Torrington, 1994; Hofstede, 2015). Individualist actions are motivated by their own attitudes and customs, while collectivists are focused by collective norms (Kulkarni et al, 2010). Also, individualists are more focused toward undertaking a personal task, while collectivists are driven more in the direction of achieving balanced relationships (Kulkarni et al, 2010). In certain societies, being an individualist is seen as an advantage while in other societies it can be viewed as isolating. The amount of individualism or collectivism in a particular society will influence the essence of the relationship among the individual and the organization they belong (Hofstede, 1980). Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. To begin, Rand creates a society with collectivism to prove that man's roots are individualistic. I found the results of my self-assessments to be a very insightful and accurate description of myself. The results of the learning styles test and the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II are very valuable for examining my personality traits and learning style and making improvements as needed.
When I took the self-assessment test I got one personality type as my highest of all six personality types . The personality type that I scored the highest was social, and it matches perfect with the kind of work I envision doing it in my future. I was not surprised when I got the highest in social because I think this is how friends and loved one’s see myself when I am around them. For instance, they describe as me as a person who value helping others even if I have to go out my way to provide others with what they need. Friends, and close ones always says that I am a caring person who listen and take people’s problems very seriously. Something else that they about myself is that I am good at giving people advice or direct them to the right path. Moreover, my coworkers and friends always referred to me as a someone who is always willing to take new challenges and that I am good at sense when something's not right for them. All of these traits that people say I have are similar to the qualities and skills that social workers in general need in order for them
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
As we reviewed the self awareness module this past week it was very interesting to see how the self assessments provided the class information about their own personal human behaviors. I was aware of most of the information provided but there were some tendencies I was surprised to find fitted my character. It was good to be reminded of the things I had forgotten about myself. Learning about my individuality and how I interact and respond to others based on my traits, personality and behavior has been an awakening experience. It is also great to know that I can work on areas that need improvement to become a more balance person to better assist my subordinates, teams and organizations.
This dimension describes the relationship between the individual and the collectivism that prevails in a given society. Individualism means mostly caring of oneself and one’s immediate family. In contrast, collectivism relates to caring for both oneself and other groups.
Self assessment is a process in which you examine yourself in attempt to discover and learn more about yourself. Your likes, dislikes, behaviors, attitudes and habits can be found during this process. You can use the discoveries to your advantage by accepting or changing strengths and weaknesses. I plan on using this course to enhance my personal skills to become a better student and find success in earning my Bachelor of Arts degree at Ashford University in Social Science. Self Assessment is the first step in my successful future.
