Along the course of the book 1984, the main character Winston Smith had many ups and downs in his life. The main movement being his capture by the thought police after he met the girl he loved. There were many events that lead up to his capture, however. The book starts later in Winston’s life, and this makes it easier for the reader to imagine the events that happen in his life. The occurrences that happened in Winston’s life during the course of the book were very strictly organized and the train of thought that connected the things that happened was very straightforward. The first flashback occurred when Winston was writing in his diary after he had seen Julia. In his diary, he wrote about a memory he had of his wife. Winston remembered how dull his wife Katharine had been and that he had turned to hiring a prostitute to satisfy his sexual feelings. He also remembered that the prostitute was old and toothless, but nonetheless, he still had intercourse with her. This flashback revealed the Winston was instinctually driven as opposed to being driven by logic and reasoning. It was very important that the readers saw that Winston could not control his feelings no matter how hard he tried. The other important flashback that Winston had was about his mother. Winston had dreamt that he was back in the poverty-stricken London when he was 12 years old. He had said that he had killed his mother emotionally, what he meant by this was that he had hit her with the final blow by stealing food from her and his starving sister and ran away with it. This flashback was important because it revealed the guilt Winston had about the death of his family, but it also revealed that Winston was jealous that his mother was able to have free emotions and love.
