In order for a child’s multi-literacy competency to grow educators must introduce them to the various forms available to them. Educators are given the job of providing a space for learners to develop their own multimodal ways of making meaning in different contexts with their variables of culture, gender and life experience (Kalantzis, 2012). Teachers must be aware of the different Englishes and forms of literacy as their classrooms are more than likely to hold children from various cultures and socioeconomic situations. Schools have their own values and levels of competence that they recognise as “correct” and students who enter these classrooms are often expected to be familiar with working within these expectations (Green & Campbell, …show more content…
2006, p.4). Children can lose their self-confidence and self-respect when home and school language and literacy practices do not weave together smoothly. This points towards the fact that multi-literacies are indeed present and something that educators need to be working towards incorporating into their classrooms in order for students to expand their knowledge and understanding. Green and Campbell (2006, p.5) explain how children are directed in different ways of writing and communicating in their own homes and communities, requiring educators to be aware of these differences in their classrooms in order to incorporate and work around them. These practices at home can either work in favour of the child’s learning or against it, making awareness of the home practices and routines increasingly important for educators. There needs to be a genuine and real partnership between a child’s family, the community and also their educational program in order to create meaningful learning and understanding for a child.
Green and Campbell (2006, p.6) emphasise the need for a child’s classroom and outside life to have a certain amount of relevance for the child to grow in learning. Classrooms include children with various backgrounds and home languages as well as different disabilities, disorders, talents and skills. There are consequences and downfalls to ignoring a child’s cultural resources such as a second language and different experiences. Bilingualism is made unusual and not utilised as a resource when educators do not allow their bilingual children to incorporate their extended language skills into their classroom learning (Adoniou, 2014). A child’s learning potential is effected when their second language is not utilised and if they are not able to reach into that knowledge and ability to communicate in more than one way. A child’s identity and who they are is ignored when they are unable to communicate in a way that is meaningful to them, which can also cause social and emotional issues for the child (Adoniou, 2014). The transferability of literacy from school to the “real” world is crucially important but often lost when the diversity of the home, community and sociocultural status is misunderstood and not integrated into a child’s classroom experience (Cairney, 2016, …show more content…

Print literacy is not the only skill required to function in society today, and educators need to be aware of multi-literacies in order to prepare their children for life after the classroom. Language is ideological and educators must help children in recognising how texts are constructed in trying to get a particular view across (Green & Campbell, 2006, p.10). Students should learn how to interpret information in whatever form it is given, understand the content presented and then be able to critically analyse the information given (Green & Campbell, 2006, p.7). Understanding of how to manage the sheer amount of information presented, how to filter it and critically analyse information is an important skill that educators must strive to develop in their classrooms (Green & Campbell, 2006,
p.7). The diversity in language and the various factors effecting Englishes provide a basis for concluding that there are many Englishes that educators need to be aware of for working in their classrooms. A discussion of the importance of multi-literacies has also shown the need to incorporate working with multi-literacies for children to learn to function and contribute to society. Thus educators play a critical role in bringing each child’s diverse language abilities into the classroom to promote the best value for learning through the multi-literacies available. A high awareness of both Englishes and multi-literacies in classrooms will provide learners an environment in which they are comfortable and thus an environment in which their learning and understanding can only grow.
In Aria: A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood, the author Richard Rodriguez argues that since there is a lack of bilingual education taught in American schools, many students face a loss of intimacy to their native language, leaving them identifiable-less. He makes this claim by expressing that although native language can cause divisions in communication, it is the basis structure to a person.
The essay starts off by talking about a common belief shared by many parents now about how students miss out on “a great deal by not being taught their family’s language”(Rodriguez 525). Bilingual education offers a completely different world for students of different ethnic background and thus creates a comfort zone limiting the risk-taking factor necessary for the maturation of a child to an adult. Rodriguez argues supporters of bilingualism fail to realize "while one suffers a diminished sense of private individuality by becoming assimilated into public society, such assimilation makes possible the achievement of public individuality" (Rodriguez 26). He explains that the imperative "radical self-reformation" required by education is lost by offering bilingual education and such a program suggests a place where the need for a sense of public identity disappears. A bilingual program gives a student the opportunity to be separated from real life and institutes a life that leaves out an essential understanding of the world. Finding a definition of literacy is not as easy as it sounds. The Webster definition says that to be literate is to be” able to read and write.” But to some researchers, this definition is too simplistic, leading to multiple models of literacy. Most Americans adhere to the autonomous model, which falls closest to the standard, dictionary definition. Believers in this form say that literacy is a cognitive activity that students learn like any other basic skill. It has a set of proficiencies that one must master in order to be capable of decoding and encoding text (Alvermann, 2009; SIL International, 1999). A competing theory is the ideological model, which claims literacy is intrinsically linked to culture, and therefore what constitutes a “literate” individual is ever-changing. Society is the largest influence on literacy, according to this thought, and it is affected by politics, religion, philosophy and more (Alvermann, 2009; SIL International, 1999). These two are just the tip of the iceberg. For example, some studies recognize “literacy as competence,” which is a “measure of competence to do a given task or work in a given field,” (SIL International, 1999) such as being computer literate. From my experience, bilingual education was a disadvantage during my childhood. At the age of twelve, I was introduced into a bilingual classroom for the first time. The crowded classroom was a combination of seventh and eighth grade Spanish-speaking students, who ranged from the ages of twelve to fifteen. The idea of bilingual education was to help students who weren’t fluent in the English language. The main focus of bilingual education was to teach English and, at the same time, teach a very basic knowledge of the core curriculum subjects: Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. Unfortunately, bilingual education had academic, psychological, and social disadvantages for me.
Literacy is the term used when talking about the ability to read and write. It leads to success in K-12 school, post-secondary school, the ability to compete in the job market, and participation in democratic process (Wei, Blackorby, & Schiller, 2011). Teaching young children how to read and write however is a very complex process that requires a teacher to employ a myriad of strategies to help students. When a teacher takes into consideration all the different abilities in a classroom having multiple strategies that help all students become proficient in speaking and listening, reading, and writing, is essential.
...s Bilingual Education seem impressive on the surface, but in reality, there are many prevalent issues that policymakers have conveniently overlooked which affects other monolingual children who are ‘underrepresented’ and forced into a Bilingual Education. Jill critiqued that the current ‘drip-feed’ system; in which students are exposed to Mother Tongue for only two periods a day is clearly insufficient and students should be offered more languages that are of interest to them. As Jill sips her coffee, she contemplates the future of her children. Will they go through the same experience? Which Mother Tongue must she choose for them? Will this experience be a vicious cycle? Jill vowed to provide the best for her children but as for herself, her adamant refusal to acknowledge Malay as a second language has successfully reverted her back to be the striving monolingual.

Language has pioneered many interracial relationships and historical milestones. Language is a necessity for basic communication and cultural diversity. Being multilingual is a skill proven influential to a successful future. Due to rapid globalization, countries all over the world are stressing the importance of learning a second, or even third, language. With the exception of time and lack of resources, adults have very few widely applicable disadvantages to learning multiple languages. However, language learning as a child presents more complications. Some of those include not having enough funding at the elementary school level to introduce a program for secondary language, academic overload for the youth, stress for both the parent and student parties, and the mixing of languages. Not all of these complications are true in any or all situations, however, and the absence of them provides multitudes of opportunity for future career and academic success. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the parents or the education legislation to decide whether they encourage the learning of a secondary language at the young age necessary for retention. “The general consensus is that it takes between five to seven years for an individual to achieve advanced fluency,” therefore the younger a child begins to learn, the more likely they are to benefit to the maximum potential (Robertson). Keeping the language learning in high school or beginning the process earlier is a greatly controversial discussion that is important to address because of the topic’s already lengthy suspension.
As time goes by and as the global community develops, the world grows more and more international, making second or third language acquisition become necessary to the majority. With the growing importance of multiple language ability, more and more parents think of bilingual or multilingual education, which means acquisitions of two or more languages, for their kids. In fact, we do have many reasons showing why multilingual education is important and beneficial, such as aspects of interpersonal relationship, employment, brain health, and so on.
