Recently, a white supremacist assaulted a Korean grandma while yelling “white power,” and black comedian Chris Rock unexpectedly humiliated three Asian children onstage during the 2016 Oscars --as he ironically talked about racism. Despite his derogatory jokes, Rock was praised by many for addressing the lack of diversity in the Oscars, yet rarely did non-Asian critics mention the flaw of attacking another race, as well as exploiting children as a platform for comedy and social issues. The Asian community was outraged, but of course, it was hastily silenced by people (who were not Asian, so the magnitude of the offense does not even affect them) saying “it’s a joke, don’t be such a snowflake!” Despite appall from Asians, there were again silenced for asserting their opinion over this clearly racist act. It seems as though Asians have become some sort of anomaly of devalued cultures rather than seen as living, working people who also want equal rights. As a young chinese boy growing up in America, he was taught the way to assimilation was to abandon the language, culture, and traditions of his ancestors, and his essay is a remorseful reflection on the consequences of his sacrifice. Despite giving away so much, despite doing it all to ‘become white’, he will always be an outsider – race and skin color can never be the uniting factor of a community. The United States of America is the place of opportunity and fortune. “Many immigrants hoped to achieve this in the United States and similar to other immigrants many people from the Asian Pacific region hoped to make their fortune. They planned to either return to their homelands or build a home in their new country (Spring, 2013).” For this reason, life became very complicated for these people. They faced many challenges in this new country, such as: classifying them in terms of race and ethnicity, denying them the right to become naturalized citizens, and rejecting them the right of equal educational opportunities within the school systems. “This combination of racism and economic exploitation resulted in the educational policies to deny Asians schooling or provide them with segregated schooling (Spring, 2013).”This was not the country of opportunity and fortune as many believed. It was the country of struggle and hardship. Similarly, like many other immigrants, Asian Americans had the determination to overcome these obstacles that they faced to prove that the United States was indeed their home too.
In this paper I will be sharing information I had gathered involving two students that were interviewed regarding education and their racial status of being an Asian-American. I will examine these subjects’ experiences as an Asian-American through the education they had experienced throughout their entire lives. I will also be relating and analyzing their experiences through the various concepts we had learned and discussed in class so far. Both of these individuals have experiences regarding their education that have similarities and differences.
As a minority, coming from an international country to a foreign nation has been the most crucial decision that my family has concluded to live the possibility of the "American Dream". However, growing up as an Asian-American student wasn’t simple; I was faced with the challenge of malicious racial slurs, spiteful judgment, and unjustified condemnation that attacked my family's decision to come to America.
I also researched instances of counter actions taken by Asian Americans to protest against these negative images. My research also has examples of Asians that have succeeded in breaking through the racial barriers in the media. The results show that even though racial stereotyping still exists in various forms of mass media, there are signs that show noticeable improvement in allowing a more balanced image of Asian Americans. Statement of the Problem There are close to 12 million Asian Americans living in the United States (U.S. Asian, 2000). Asian Americans are considered one of the fastest growing minorities (Pimentel, 2001).
For those Asian Americans who make known their discontent with the injustice and discrimination that they feel, in the white culture, this translates to attacking American superiority and initiating insecurities. For Mura, a writer who dared to question why an Asian American was not allowed to audition for an Asian American role, his punishment was “the ostracism and demonization that ensued. In essence, he was shunned” (Hongo 4) by the white people who could not believe that he would attack their superior American ways. According to writers such as Frank Chin and the rest of the “Aiiieeeee!” group, the Americans have dictated Asian culture and created a perception as “nice and quiet” (Chin 1972, 18), “mama’s boys and crybabies” without “a man in all [the] males.” (Chin 1972, 24). This has become the belief of the proceeding generations of Asian Americans and therefore manifested these stereotypes.
The Asian American religious site I visited was the Nichiren Buddhish Church of America, located three blocks from Japantown at 2016 Pine Street San Francisco, CA 94115. I attended their Asian American religious event of Japanese tea Ceremony which are held on Fridays and Saturdays. From the outside, the church blended in with the other residential houses. Upon entering, I was shocked at how different the interior design was compared to its outer appearance. The interior architecture resembles a traditional Japanese home with shoji (sliding panel door), tatami floors (mats), tokonoma (vertical scroll of calligraphy/art), ikebana (traditional flowers) and many other aspects that contributed to the vibe. Although the ceremony didn’t require quests to don on a certain attire, all the hosts/hostesses wore beautiful traditional kimono, which made their every movement give off a sense of graceful and elegant etiquette. They then gave a brief lessons of the meaning of Japanese tea ceremony, also known as Chanoyu, Sado or simply Ocha in Japanese.
The Asian culture is interesting because they appear to understand what it takes to be highly successful in school, and in life and possibly in everything that they do. In the Asian culture regardless of their economic status, students do well in school. A wide variety of societies, religions and ethnicities shape the culture of Asia. The Asian culture is a combination of varying customs, traditions and social values that form the Asian society. The cultures of the continent of Asia are the most diverse of world cultures.
