The previously mentioned symbol of Asclepius remains the adopted symbol of medical practice today. Most people are familiar with the staff intertwined with the serpent. Believed to be resilient to disease and illness, the serpent, also considered a sacred creature in many ancient civilizations, played a role of the Asclepius, the ancient Temple of healing and predecessor to the idea oh a hospital. The Asclepiad temples were dedicated to the God Asclepius, and were sanctuaries of healing. The temples were located in scenic settings of natural beauty in order to inspire and encourage relaxation through scenic grandeur. Here Pythagoras, better known as a mathematician for the famous theorem named for him, applied theoretical mathematics and the theory of numbers to the natural sciences (Nordqvist, 1). Pythagoras equated the duration of the lunar cycle to the female menstrual cycle and related the biblical equation of infinity as the product of the number seventy and forty to the normal length of pregnancy at 280 days (Nordqvist, 1). More practical, Pythagoras also contributed the idea of medical quarantine to the practice of medicine setting a forty-day period standard quarantine to avoid the spread of disease. While Pythagoras chose the number forty for its perceived divine nature his practical application of a quarantine must have been based on the observation that in some instances disease spreads through contact. Believed to have been a pupil of Pythagoras, Alcmaeon pioneered anatomical dissection, a field in which Galen will later innovate. Through dissection Alcmaeon came to believe that the sensory organs were connected to the brain by channels. While he did not initially perceive the nervous system he is given credit for identifying the optic nerve. His Pythagorean influence in evidenced in his view of natural opposing powers, e.g. the wet, dry, the hot, the cold, the sweet, the bitter etc. The concept of symmetry and balance are part of Pythagorean philosophy as well as with artists in ancient Greece who’s sculpted works with the purpose of depicting excellence through natural symmetry in the male form. Although he lived four centuries before the birth of Christ, a man named Hippocrates recorded the symptoms of diseases we still see to this day. Known as the “Father of Medicine” (Hippocrates), Hippocrates was an ancient physician who studied and recorded his observances of the body’s infections and physiology. He set forth the foundation for future physicians, and in doing so, is accredited for our knowledge of infectious diseases in earlier centuries. During this time however, many believed the earth and its inhabitants were composed of four general elements: air, water, fire, and dirt. They also believed that any one person who fell ill was being punished by the gods. As a foresighted thinker though, Hippocrates encouraged the idea that humans became ill due to natural causes. In that wisdom, he recorded all his observances of his patients and their illnesses, taking careful note of the bodily symptoms and their progression.
A simple process formed the backbone of most Greek philosophy. The ancients thought that by combining two equally valid but opposite ideas, the thesis and the antithesis, a new, higher truth could be achieved. That truth is called the synthesis. This tactic of integrating two seemingly opposite halves into a greater whole was a tremendous advance in human logic. This practice is illustrated throughout Oedipus at Colonus in regard to Sophocles’ portrayal of vision, sight, and the eye. In Colonus, there are many and varied descriptions of the aspects of the eye, whether the eye be human or divine. To Sophocles, the eye must have been a synthesis, both physical and spiritual, yet something apart from both.
Early humans related pain to evil, magic, and demons. Relief of pain was the responsibility of sorcerers, shamans, priests, and priestesses, who used herbs, rites, and ceremonies as their treatments. The Greeks and Romans were the first to advance a theory of sensation, the idea that the brain and nervous system have a role in producing the perception of pain. But it was not until the middle ages and well into the Renaissance-the 1400s and 1500s-that evidence began to accumulate in support of these theories. Leonardo da Vinci and his contemporaries came to believe that the brain was the central organ responsible for sensation. Da Vinci also developed the idea that the spinal cord transmits sensations to the brain. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the study of the body and the senses continued to be a source of wonder for the world's philosophers. In 1664, the French philosopher René Descartes described what to this day is still called a "pain pathway" (5).

Greek surgery was mostly influenced by Egyptian surgery. The Greeks made a great array of medical advances. Eventually, the Greeks were overturned by the Romans, who took many of the Greek physicians and scholars and made them their own. The Romans had a very significant impact on surgery in today’s medical world. As an example, some of the scalpels that were used then have similar shape and function as they today. Although it is not apparent whether or not Ancient Egyptian physicians had formal training or not, their methods for diagnosing and handling illnesses were very efficient at times. As a matter of fact, we still use some of their remedies today when we make medicines. Examples of the diagnosis and remedies for diseases in Ancient Egypt can be found in the Ebers Papyrus. This is one of the oldest known documentations of ancient medical practices, dating as far back as fifteen hundred BC. Steven Gilbert, the author of A Small Dose of Toxicology: The Health Effects of Common Chemicals, defines the text as “approximately one hundred and ten pages on anatomy and physiology, toxicology, spells, and treatment recorded on papyrus. The papyrus also has many prescriptions showing the treatment of many disorders by animal, plant, and mineral toxins that still occur today.” Modern-day examples of medical ailments mentioned in the Ebers Papyrus include Asthma, Cancer, and Belly Aches. Oddly enough, the heart, rather than the brain, was regarded as the headquarters of human knowledge in the body because this was where the abundance of emotion was said to be drawn forth from. The heart was also thought to be a means of communication between the people and the gods because people were given insight and instruction pertaining to the gods will through this organ of the body. The Egyptians did not understand how important the heart was in terms of blood circulation, as we understand it today. Their belief was that the heart was connected to all the other parts of the body, via canals, which were used to transport bodily fluids and waste to their appropriate locations. The beginning of anatomy and physiology, ironically, began with a curiosity in biology. The first man to create an important contribution to biology was Alcmaeon, in the 5th century, BC. He was the first scientist to have worked with dissection. His focus was in trying to find out from where and how human intelligence came to be. His research never intended to be anatomical. He merely stumbled upon anatomical research. Alcmaeon thought that when someone had a concussion it affected the mind. He believed this was where he was going to find his answer to where intelligence comes from. He began to think more and more on this idea and finally began dissecting bodies to try and find his answer.
