The study that I will be reviewing for this assignment is the Asch Conformity Experiment. This particular experiment struck my interest a lot more than the other options presented to us and I definitely wanted to look more into it. According to psychological terms, conformity refers to an individual's tendency to follow the unspoken rules or actions of the shared group to which one may belong(McLeod, 2007). Scientists for a very long time have been concerned with to what degree people follow or rebel against social norms. Asch and Milgram’s experiment was unethical in their methods of not informing the participant of the details surrounding the experiment and the unwarranted stress; their experiment portrayed the circumstances of real life situation surrounding the issues of obedience to authority and social influence. In life, we are not given the courtesy of knowledge when we are being manipulated or influenced to act or think a certain way, let us be honest here because if we did know people were watching and judging us most of us would do exactly as society sees moral, while that may sound good in ensuring that we always do the right thing that would not be true to the ways of our reality. Therefore, by not telling the participants the details of the experiment and inflicting unwarranted stress, Asch and Milgram’s replicated the reality of life. In “Options and Social Pressure” Solomon E. Asch conducts an experiment to show the power of social influence, by using the lengths of sticks that the participants had to match up with the best fit, Asch then developed different scenarios to see how great the power of influence is, but what he discovered is that people always conformed to the majority regardless of how big or small the error was the individual always gave in to the power of the majority.
A former Yale psychologist, Stanley Milgram, administered an experiment to test the obedience of "ordinary" people as explained in his article, "The Perils of Obedience". An unexpected outcome came from this experiment by watching the teacher administer shocks to the learner for not remembering sets of words. All throughout life we encounter situations where an acute sense of attention and focus is essential to achieve a goal and overcome obstacles. One such instance was Walter Mischel’s Marshmallow Test, introduced in 1986. His experiment prompted young children into situations that strained their ability to use focus and attention to achieve a goal. In this case, the goal was to be able to wait 15 minutes to be able to eat two marshmallow, instead of just eating the single marshmallow in front of you. Summary Dr. Stanley Milgram conducted a study at Yale University in 1962, in an attempt to understand how individuals will obey directions or commands. This study became known as the Milgram Obedience Study. Stanley Milgram wanted to understand how normal people could become inhumane, cruel, and severely hurt other people when told to carry out an order, in blind obedience to authority. This curiosity stemmed from the Nazi soldiers in Germany, and how their soldiers could do horrible acts to the Jews. To carry out his study, Dr. Milgram created a machine with an ascending row of switches that were marked with an increasing level of voltage that could be inflicted on another person.
A man is running late to work one day when he passes by a homeless person asking for help. This man and many others usually consider this particular man to be generous, but since he is late, he ignores the homeless person and continues on his way. One can assume that if he had the time, he would have helped. Does that matter, though, seeing as in that situation, he did not in fact help? Scenarios like this supports Lee Ross and Richard Nisbett’s idea that it is the situation that influences a person’s behavior, not he or she’s individual conscience. Although a person’s individual conscience could play a part in how one behaves in a given scenario, ultimately, the “situational variable” has more impact on the actions of the person than he or she’s morals.

In 1951, Solomon Asch carried out several experiments on conformity. The aim of these studies was to investigate conformity in a group environment situation. The purpose of these experiments was to see if an individual would be swayed by public pressure to go along with the incorrect answer. Asch believed that conformity reflects on relatively rational process in which people are pressured to change their behaviour. Asch designed experiments to measure the pressure of a group situation upon an individual judgment. Asch wanted to prove that conformity can really play a big role in disbelieving our own senses.
According to Myers and Twenge (2013), conformity is “a change in behavior or belief as the result of real or imagined peer pressure” (p. 188). In 12 Angry Men, conformity is seen in the beginning of the film. As the jury is voting on the suspect’s verdict, there is a hesitancy from a few of the jurors. In the beginning, only a couple jurors raised their hands for “guilty”. Slowly, more and more people started raising their hands as a result of peer pressure from those around them. Solomon Asch’s experiment in “Opinions and Social Pressure” studied a subject’s ability to yield to social pressure when placed within a group of strangers. His research helped illustrate how groups encourage conformity. During a typical experiment, members of the group were asked by the experimenter to claim two obvious mismatched lines were identical. The single individual who was not privy to this information was the focal point of the experiment. Twelve out of eighteen times the unsuspecting individual went along with the majority, dispelling his beliefs in favor of the opinions of the group.
His experiment involved fifty male students who participated in a vision test. Asch put a naive participant in a room with seven confederates. They are asked a series of questions and testers check to see if an individual who isn’t an actor conforms to the answers of the rest of the group. This was a way to analyze how often people go with what others are doing rather than stand out. One test involved holding a card with a line and comparing it to another card with more lines to guess what line was the same. He tested 50 people. The number of times each participant conformed to the majority view was measured, and on average, about 32% which is one third, of the participants in the situation conformed to the clear incorrect majority on the critical trials. In the control group, less than 1% of the participants gave the wrong answer. Therefore, he concluded that people conform for two main reasons, one being that they want to fit in the group, which is termed as normative influence. Asch’s Conformity Procedure was where participants were presented with a set of lines. In one case a single line and the other a trio of lines. The participant’s task was simply to find which line in the trio of lines matches the single line in length. When looking at the lines, there is only one line of the trio lines that obviously matches the single line. What Asch did was put participants in groups of collaborators, the actors, to turn in a specific answer. He did this so that the collaborators would give their answers first and then the participant who thinks he’s just one of the participants like the rest gives their answer. Asch became famous in the 1950’s for his conformity experiments that studied the correlation between social pressure and conformity. He strongly believed that people would give into social pressure and conform to the rest of the group even if the answer was wrong. From Asch’s experiments, he found that people were willing to give an incorrect answer to conform to the rest of the group (Cherry, 2016).
