Wilderness. Childbirth. Hunt. The Greek goddess, Artemis, ruled over these things, along with many other aspects on earth. Artemis is a strong, independent, and protective goddess who had a powerful desire to care for others, didn’t need a man to complete her, and wasn’t afraid to be intense when it came to defending herself or others. Artemis has a powerful desire to care for others and proves it in many different ways. One example would be helping her mother give birth to her brother, Apollo. Her mother and titaness, Leto, had Artemis on an island called Ortygia, and pretty much right after her birth, Leto began to experience painful contractions with Apollo because Zeus’ actual wife, Hera, had cursed her. Pretty much since she was born, Artemis became exposed to the caring and assisting of others. Not only did Artemis become the goddess of childbirth, but she also proved her strong desire to care for others when she willingly and quickly helped her mother. Her desire to care only grew stronger from then on. A man was not needed in order to complete the life of Artemis, for she is viewed as an independent goddess. Many men were interested in her, but she wasn’t interested in them the same way (“Artemis”). An example of this is in the many legends of Artemis and the huntsman, Orion. In one popular legend, Orion couldn’t resist the woods where Artemis and her nymphs lived because he had a crush on one of Artemis’ nymphs. One day, he spotted the nymphs, including the one he liked, and chased after them. Artemis was also the goddess of virginity, and the legend of Artemis and Orion perfectly depicts that. She only saw Orion as her hunting partner when she accidentally killed him; her brother had tricked her into doing it. The moon was associated with Artemis because she has a caring and feminine nature, but she can also react in anger and rage. The story of Artemis killing Niobe’s children when Niobe insulted her mother is a perfect example of this trait. Women form an important part of the folk epic, written by Homer, The Odyssey. Within the story there are three basic types of women: the goddess, the seductress, and the good hostess/wife. Each role adds a different element and is essential to the telling of the story.
The Greek gods and goddess have sparked my interest ever since seventh grade when I read The Percy Jackson Series. All throughout the books my attention was grasped by their power and demanding personalities, one specific goddess that stood out to me was Athena. Her charm and dominant personality fascinated me and definitely caught my attention. Before reading The Percy Jackson Series, I knew very little about Athena or the gods and goddess’ in general. Later, I took it upon myself to find out more about who the gods were and why they are important to the series I was reading at the time. My knowledge came in handy during the research I did to complete my paper. During my research I found that Athena was very important in not only The Odyssey, but in Greek mythology. She was one of the most confident and practical goddess’, and she was very well respected by the Greek people because of how she helped them.
In Homer's epics women were very respected by journey and warrior men. The women were looked upon as beautiful, nurturing human beings. The mortal women in Homer's "Iliad" were mostly known for being faithful wives and very giving mothers. These women care for their children, such as Odysseus's mother did, when he was in great need of confidence and reassurance. After the death of Odysseus's mother, she returned as a shade from the underworld to tell Odysseus, "Your wife weeps for your return as she lives in your house with a loyal heart, and your son has kept your kingdom whole."(90) This gave Odysseus the confidence in his heart to continue on home to Ithaca, to reunite with his dear wife, Penelope. A perfect example of how nurturing and dedicated the women were, not only to their children, but also to their husbands.
Artemis was born of Leto and Zeus, on the island of Delos, later helping with the delivery of her twin brother, Apollo. Some sources state that her actual birthplace is not Delos, but an island called Ortygia. Although the two islands could be one and the same, it is not clear. In helping with the birth of her brother Artemis fulfilled her role as a goddess of childbirth (which she shares with Eileithyia and Hera). She is the goddess of chastity, the hunt and the moon, too. But I'll get more into those later.
The bride offers locks of her hair to the virgin deity Artemis in hopes that the god would ease her passage from virginity. The bride’s girdle is also taken off and consecrated to Artemis or Athena (Blundell 105). This pre-wedding ritual is one of the few events women are allowed to participate in.
The goddesses such as Hera, Thetis and Athene are strong, powerful, and elegant. Aside from powerful, in Iliad the goddess Hera represents a nurturing and motherly side, and Homer writes, “I have come down to stay your anger but will you obey me? from the sky; and the goddess of the white arms Hera sent me, who loves both of you equally in her heart and cares for you” (7). In the Odyssey we have the two goddesses, Calypso and Circe whom Odysseus has extended affairs with and they are beautiful and embraced sexuality. Calypso had an egocentric and dominative character because she wanted Odysseus as her immortal husband (Bauschatz, 22). Women have given birth to new generations for centuries and have the common stereotype of being caring and gentle. But in the creation myth, women were given to man as a punishment. In the book of collected Greek tales, " Mythology Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes", by Edith Hamilton, women take up important roles that shape each story. Although women are usually characterized as being helpful and motherly, Greek mythology, on the other hand, portrays them to cause distress, fear, and anxiety to numerous men. Women’s actions are shown to be influenced with jealousy and vengeance which gives them an evil nature.

Athena was the Greek Goddess of many ideas, but she was famous mostly for her superior wisdom, her cunning skills in times of war, and her implausible talent for household tasks, such as weaving and pottery. She was celebrated more than any other God in ancient mythology, was the supposed inventor of countless innovations, and her figure gave reason for Greek woman to gain rights long before others of their time. The goddess of war, the guardian of Athens, and the defender of Heroes; Athena’s impact on the lives of Ancient Greeks is outstanding.
The role of Artemis, however, seems minimal when compared to that of her twin brother, Apollo. Apollo was constantly intervening in the mortal war in favor of Troy. Responsible for sending the plague to the Greek camps, Apollo was the first divine entity to appear in The Iliad. Aphrodite, who was chosen by Paris as the fairest, obviously sided with the Trojans, as well. Although she played a fairly minor role during the course of battle, she did successfully convince Ares, the god of war, to help the Trojans.
Although the gods are immortal, The Iliad gave them human emotions. They felt human traits such as love, humor, empathy and disdain. They held grudges and played cruel jokes on each other, but also exhibited care for those who asked for their aid. For instance, Glacaus was overcome with grief when Sarpedon was killed, however; he prayed to the god, Apollo, to be healed so he could avenge his fallen comrade. Apollo “eased his pain, staunched the black blood from the wound, and gave him new strength” (167). After the death of Hector at the hands of Achilles, the goddess, Iris, was sent by the great god, Jove, to Hector’s father, Priam. Iris prompted Priam to collect the body (148).
