Andy Warhol began creating the Death and Disaster series in 1962. This past week the four-panel silk screened painting from his titled " 1964 Birmingham Race Riots" included in the "Death and Disaster" series, is estimated to sell for $45 million. It was a direct response to an article Warhol saw in Life magazine that ran with an image by Associated Press by Photographer Charles Moore. Warhol and his assistant would create a stencil upon a mesh screen, carefully pouring a light sensitive emulsion paint over the stencil then add an black and white photograph. The screen is exposed to light, hardening the emulsion everywhere except where the image overlay has been placed. Warhol used large canvases that he would lay on the floor and continuously create in his gallery space he called "The Silver Factory". Other pieces within this series include "White Marilyn" which Warhol painted shortly after Marilyn Monroe's suicide in 1962. The subject of this artwork is a shipwreck. I see it looks like a storm in the ocean and there’s a ship but the ships mass and sails appear to be damaged. The crew is lowering lifeboats, suggesting that they have to abandon ship. A rescue boat is coming in on the right side of the painting and another boat and ship are coming in on the left side of the painting to help the crew from the distressed ship. There also appears to be a lighthouse at a distance. The action being conveyed is the waves crashing into the ship. The darkness in the waves and the colors he used made them seem like there real ocean waves. The art piece does seem to be telling ...
Andy Warhol was a graphic artist, painter, and film maker, amoung other things, also associated with Pop Art. He moved to New York, around 1950, where he did his first advertisements as a comercial artist and, later, began showing in expositions. One technique employed by Warhol involved repeditive silk screen prints on canvas. He used this method to produce many series of prints with various, easily reconizable images. Between 1962 and 1964 in his self titled studio “The Factory”(Phaidon 484), Warhol produced over two thousand pictures. One of these, Lavender Disaster, was made in 1963 and belonged to a series of pictures all including the same image of an electric chair.
Known for being the father of Pop Art, and a giant in pop culture, Warhol dominated the art scene from the late fifties up until his untimely death in 1987. However Warhol’s influence spread further then the art world, he also was a major player in the LGBT, avant-garde and experimental cinema movements. Born in 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Slovakian immigrant parents, Warhol came from humble beginnings. Becoming widely known for debuting the concept of ‘pop art’ in 1962. Warhol’s reach grew further when he started experimenting with film, becoming a major player in the LGBT, avant-garde and experimental cinema movements. Warhol’s artist studio, known famously as ‘The Factory’ became a hub for experimentation, and a go-to point for celebrities, musicians and trans folk. During this time, Warhol came out as an openly gay man, challenging the status quo of the day, a time when being homosexual was illegal. While also producing highly experiential films such as ‘Blow Job’ (1964) and ‘Sleep’ (1964) which were highly political and provocative, at the time. So in the end, everyone has to make their own interpretation of this piece of art. If the goal of art is to prompt a strong emotional response from those who view it, then ultimately, the Banksy painting “Looters” succeeded. However, the memory of the actions taken by the soldiers of the National Guard after Hurricane Katrina will live on in the hearts and minds of Katrina victims, not because of a painting by some European of them removing any valuables they could find, but by the little paintings of x’s that the soldiers left on all houses where they removed any survivors they could find.
The artwork I chose for the art criticism project was ‘The Survivors’ by Kathe Kollwitz. The piece was created in 1923 in Berlin, Germany, where she resided with her husband. She and her husband resided in a poorer area, and it is believed to have contributed too much of her artwork style. ‘The Survivors’ is currently displayed in two museums, the MoMA and the Kathe Kollwitz Museum. In the piece there is a woman directly in the middle, with sunken in cheek bones is draped in a black cloak. Her arms are around three small children, who look very frightened. On each side of her body there are an additional four small children who convey sadness upon their innocent faces. Also, they are outstretching their arms as if they are begging for her to give them something. In “Is Art a Waste of Time?” Rhys Southan examines Effective Altruists’ (EA’s), an organization that advocates people to pursue a career that provides money for generous donations (Southan). Southan also explains how EA’s believe that it is an ethical choice in giving up one’s hobbies to increase their income for those living in extremities (Southan). Despite the EA’s view of ethical standards, there are many variations of what people consider to be right and wrong behavior. Jobs such as being a teacher, a doctor or an artist, all have related ethical principles in which could define how moral a person is in their occupation. An ethical career is one that allows a person to have integrity, compassion and passion when helping others.

The rise of vandalistic art produced by Banksy and others, has altered the way in which the public views graffiti culture. Where spray paint once represented gangs and violence, it now suggests an exciting and cutting edge artform that could potentially be a lucrative investment. In fact, Banksy’s work is so sought after that people are willing to take bricks out of buildings in order to steal it. In 2013, one of Banksy’s most famous pieces of artwork was stolen from the side of a store in the UK. The colors that Warhol used for the race riot are red,white,and blue.From my perspective I think Warhol did this to be slightly sarcastic and to make this portrait into a political paradox.My reason for saying this is because red stands for the blood that was shed for this country,white is for the trust that many people have in this country and blue is for the freedom that people proclaim to have in this country.In each slide of Warhol’s picture the red would stand for the blood that was shed in the riot,the white would stand for the trust in the law enforcement that people who were not oppresed gave to the law and the blue stands for the freedom that many didn’t feel like they received.
