Overview

Graffiti is drawing or writing typically with spray paint of an image, name or scribbles on a wall of a public place. Graffiti in New York began in the 70’s and 80’s that changed the entire city. It has created a different form of art that is also controversial.

Background

• Traced back to early human’s example chauvet and lascaux cave which are paleolithic
• Roman/Greek would write professions of love, political messages, or contemplative thoughts
• 1500s Spanish Conquistadors made slashes on walls when they ransacked ancient cities of the incas
Graffiti has been thought to provoke thought and incite change
• Saw rise in 70/80s with the rise of hip hop culture changed from profane to colorful expressions

A simple one word single color squib that is placed on anything from windows to ATMs. Conveying vulgar/racist words, marking gang territories, or even professing love. It isn’t the highest form but is a necessary evil when considering that most artist to the level of a Banksy or a Swoon have all usually started at this level.

Lushsux is an example of a modern graffiti artist that creates various forms of graffiti art. He makes artworks containing internet memes, political statements and his name mostly. He has even called himself the “meme artist”. He resides in the Melbourne, Australia and is remains anonymous. One of his most popular works is a painting off Harambe and essentially, a memorial for the gorilla.

Graffiti Defacement and its place in Society

• I believe graffiti is defacement but also art at the same time. Graffiti is a way to express someone’s viewpoint or opinions to the public.
