The short story, Arrival at Manzanar, shows a picture of what it was like to be an Oriental U.S citizen during the time of World War II. One quote that stands out to me is, “At the time it seemed like we had been living under this reign of fear for years. In fact, we lived there about to months.” I think this quote really helps the author make her point that life was extremely difficult for Japanese-Americans at that time. Most of the country was on edge, and felt that anyone of Japanese decent could be a possible threat. The idea of being forced out of my home by the military and possibly split up from my family is devastating and I cannot imagine what it must have felt like for the author to go through that experience. It can be said that the poor conditions and living styles of Japanese-Canadians were unsafe and unadaptable. A 22-year-old named Tom Tamagi proclaims, “I was a 22 year old Japanese Canadian, a prisoner of my own country of birth. We were confined inside a high wire fence of Hastings park just like caged animals”. Specifically, it is shown that many internees were just thrown into livestock buildings and expected to farm and produce resources, where they were also treated like animals as they were not given any attention and any assistance. This lack of personal care for Japanese-Canadians eventually led them to develop countless diseases, including pneumonia and skin infections, which impacted numerous families as many died. This atrocity of living through poor conditions had a worsening effect on Japanese-Canadians internees physical state. June Fujiyama, an ex-internee, recalled, “[w]hat a shock [it was] to arrive and find the Park surrounded by a high barbed-wire fence and guarded by soldiers who were dressed in khaki and carrying guns. I was incredulous. ‘Those guns are for us?’” To illustrate, Jane is subjected to a view of confinement as she is surprised that such protection and safety precautions are needed for her people, which demonstrates that her race is that much of a potential risk to others, and have to be under control and looked after at all times. Beginning in March of 1942, in the midst of World War II, over 100,000 Japanese-Americans were forcefully removed from their homes and ordered to relocate to several of what the United States has euphemistically labeled “internment camps.” In Farewell to Manzanar, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston describes in frightening detail her family’s experience of confinement for three and a half years during the war. In efforts to cope with the mortification and dehumanization and the boredom they were facing, the Wakatsukis and other Japanese-Americans participated in a wide range of activities. The children, before a structured school system was organized, generally played sports or made trouble; some adults worked for extremely meager wages, while others refused and had hobbies, and others involved themselves in more self-destructive activities.
In a portion of Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston’s memoir titled Farewell to Manzanar, Jeanne’s Japanese family, living in California, is ordered to move to an internment camp called Manzanar. Society impacts the family in many ways, but in this segment of the story we primarily see its effects on Jeanne. The context and setting are as follows: the Pearl Harbor bombing was a very recent happening, the United States was entering into war with Japan, and President Roosevelt had signed Executive Order 9066, allowing internment. Anyone who might threaten the war effort was moved inland into defined military areas. Essentially, the Japanese immigrants were imprisoned and considered a threat; nevertheless, many managed to remain positive and compliant. Jeanne’s family heard “the older heads, the Issei, telling others very quietly ‘Shikata ga nai’” (604), meaning it cannot be helped, or it must be done, even though the world surrounding them had become aggressive and frigid. The society had a noticeable effect on Jeanne, as it impacted her view of racial divides, her family relations, and her health.
Manzanar scarred many Japanese Americans and their families, especially Jeanne Wakatsuki even after she had left Manzanar. Not only did Manzanar ruin people when they were there but after being there their lives were changed forever. Throughout Farewell to Manzanar, Jeanne’s thoughts on her identity change, before going to Manzanar she barely knew herself, at Manzanar she wanted to be accepted, and after leaving Jeanne wanted to be seen as normal or to otherwise be invisible.
The early 1940’s were tough times for many Japanese living in America. This is all due to the Japanese and American conflict in World War II, after Japan decided to bomb Pearl Harbor. After this incident many Japanese-Americans were discriminated against and were thought of as bad Japanese instead of the Americans they were. A lot of these Japanese-Americans were unfairly sent to internment camps in the United States. This is also true of the incidents that take place in the fictional novel Snow Falling On Cedars, by David Guterson.

In Farewell to Manzanar, by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, the Wakatsuki family is forced to move to a camp. First off, the United States government decided to put every Japanese citizen in an internment camp, called Manzanar. They did this because Pearl Harbor was bombed, and Americans were afraid the Japanese would aid Japan. The main character Jeanne is six, and she has a tight connection with her father. Some themes in the book relate to the way Papa acts. Such as isolation, male domination, the concept of family, and the plight of civilizations during wartime. In the following paragraphs, I will relate the four themes to Papa, in part one of the novel.
The best approach would most definitely be a mixture of domestic and warfront experiences, alongside a significant inclusion of the diverse races and ethnicity of American women who lived through the war. Nevertheless, that much information cannot compose a single monographic work, and so what would likely be the most credible is the work written by Rachel Walter Goossen’s book, entitled Women against the Good War: Conscientious Objection and Gender on the American Home Front, 1941-1947; as despite its focus on a singular subset of American women’s experiences, the publication appears to be the most credible of those presented. It clearly demonstrates its argument clearly, and does not hesitate to expand on details in an easily understood way. However, Goossen’s work is not the most divergent in terms of discussion of new ideas and chronicles. The work that does this most is the article “Japanese American Women During World War II" by Valerie Matsumoto, which examines the lives of Japanese-American women who were imprisoned throughout the duration of the war, unlike many other American citizens, simply die to their race.
