From the beginning of time, mankind has been using the practice of arranged marriages to join man and woman together. From cavemen hitting a woman over the head and dragging her to his cave, to a more modern way of a man asking a woman to marry him. Arranged marriages in India has many negative impacts on the community, through violence from forced marriages is one of many. Although arranged marriages do not always create violence, arranged marriages have many advantages. The practice of arranged marriages in India has a negative impact on a community by causing violence, less personal security, and a lower financial status. Most importantly, the practice of arranged marriages has a negative impact on the community because it leads to violence. Forced marriages also create violence because forced marriages may include domestic violence (“Forced Marriages”). Domestic violence is a big part of forced marriages because young girls are often abused and do not know what to do. Another example from one source said “309,546 crimes against women were reported during 2013 in India, 118, 866 of the crimes reported were domestic violence reports” (“100 Women”). In extreme cases of violence associated with forced marriages, women and girls who refuse to marry are killed in an honor killing. Not only do arranged marriages cause violence, but arranged marriages also cause less personal security. For instance, in an arranged marriage there is a lack of trust between the two people getting married (“Top Six”). When two people do not trust each other they feel less safe.
