Even though there are many cases and arguments for Dualism concerning mind - body, such as Descartes’ substance dualism, the theory does not often have hard, physical evidence to back up such premise like science does. The continued scientific progress over the past centuries has allowed us to better understand universal truths and the functions of the mind-body that were not able to have been explained scientifically in the past. Many complex, unexplained complexities have been simplified or “reduced” through chemistry,biology, or physics. Through both comparison of arguments supporting dualist theories and counter arguments, I will prove that Dualism is a concept of the past and the continued scientific progress is inevitable and will one day allow us to understand many Dualistic explanations with hard evidence and scientific proof that we have failed to do so in the past.
One of the major Dualistic theory, and one of the first proposed was that of Descartes’ interactive substance dualism. It is the view that says mind and body are separate entities - while the brain is part of the body, which is purely physical; our mind is a mental substance which is an extension of the body - a separate entity. When one experiences pain for example, the body incurs certain chemical and electrical stimuli (physical properties), which results in the self/soul consciously experiencing the felt quality and awareness of the pain (mental property). This is much argued within substance dualism that the soul and the brain interact closely with each other, though they are different substances with different properties. As we progress into the future, it is certain that with scientific progress will keep on progressing and allow us to gain a better understanding of how our body and mind interacts. We are not simply trying to argue for science without reason instead of theories like Dualism, but the reasoning behind it is that Dualism and other related theories often lack hard, physical evidence to back up such claims or main points in the theory. They are simply outdated in terms of scientific explanations, and whereas many supporters still exist today, in certain cases they are forced to rely on faith resulting from a lack of hard physical evidence. Even though there are many aspects where science have not been able to explain, we hope to one day obtain knowledge from science and in time, explain complexities and universal truth that still exists today.
One of Descartes’ most popular theory? is the distinction between mind and body. This is known as substance dualism. Substance dualism is a human being consists of two kinds of things that interact. Using this theory of substance dualism, we can explain why some people can experience excruciating pains and urges like the phantom limb syndrome.
The philosophical theory of dualism holds that mind and body are two separate entities. While dualism presupposes that the two ‘substances’ may interact, it contrasts physicalism by refusing to denote correlation between body and mind as proof of identity. Comparing the two theories, dualism’s invulnerable proof of the existence of qualia manages to evade arguments from physicalism. While a common argument against qualia—non-physical properties defined in Jackson’s Knowledge Argument—targets the unsound nature of epiphenomenalism, this claim is not fatal to the theory of dualism as it contains claims of causation and fails to stand resolute to the conceivability of philosophical zombies. This essay argues that epiphenomenalism, while often designated as a weakness when present in an argument, can remain in valid arguments from qualia.
Richard Taylor explained why the body and the mind are one, and why they are not two separate substances. In the article “The Mind as a Function of the Body”, Taylor divides his article in a number of sections and explains clearly why dualism, or the theory that the mind and the body are separate is not conceivable. The mind-body problem can be a difficult issue to discuss due to the many opinions and issues that linger. The main issue behind the mind-body problem is the question regarding if us humans are only made up of matter, or a combination of both matter and mind. If we consist of both, how can we justify the interaction between the two? A significant philosophical issue that has been depicted by many, there are many prominent stances on the mind-body problem. I believe property dualism is a strong philosophical position on the mind-body issue, which can be defended through the knowledge argument against physicalism, also refuted through the problems of interaction.
