Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that delivers education on reproductive health care, sex education and gives information on contraception. Pro-life supporters do not agree with these organizations such as Planned Parenthood because they feel that this organization is manipulating young teens by drawing them in with advice on reproductive health concerns by telling them about birth control and other contraceptives (Pauls,2017). Critics say that these women who choose abortion have a cheapened view of human life, but they are looking after their own. Unwanted pregnancies and childbirth are grueling which can have negative physical and psychological effects on the woman (Medoff, 2016). Therefore, it would be wrong to prevent women from seeking abortion. Only the women who are personally going through this process should be listened to. The opposing side does not believe it is the woman’s choice. But it is the women’s right to choose what to do with this her body. Pro-choice believes that it is the women’s choice to decide what to do with her body because it is ultimately the woman’s choice when this situation comes because it is her body and life. There can be multiple reasons why a woman might decide to take the action of abortion, but pro-life will not agree with any of those reasons because they do not think abortion is the answer. Some women may not be equipped to raise a child; therefore, it is important that she is able to choose abortion. For pro-choice woman they might view abortion as the only answer to protect herself from certain events in her life. Planned Parenthood is non-profit and has been around for over fifty years. Planned Parenthood offers many services to women, other than abortions. A few of the services offered to women are free health care, such as anemia testing, cholesterol screening, physical exams for employees and for sports, flu vaccinations, aid in quitting smoking, high blood pressure testing, tetanus vaccinations, and thyroid screening. The many other services they offer include free birth control, emergency contraception, testing for STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), breast cancer screenings, cervical cancer screenings, pelvic exams, free information to women, and a number of other things.(“General Health”) Under the Hyde amendment that passed in 1976, there has been a legislative provision prohibiting the use of certain federal funds to pay for abortion unless the pregnancy arises from incest, rape, or to save the life of the mother. From the perspective of a person who is pro-choice, they believe that “individuals have unlimited autonomy with respect to their own reproductive systems, just as long as they don’t violate the independence of others.” Pro-choice also argues that the government should not have the right to decide whether a woman should exterminate her pregnancy or not. From their viewpoint, they believe that what should be legal in the eyes of the government is contraception use, celibacy, abstinence, and abortion for the first two trimesters of pregnancy. Pro-life can argue that only 13% of abortions are because of rape and the incapability of not being able to carry a child because of health issues. They believe that the government should preserve all human life no matter what the circumstances may be. Pro-choice advocates believe that abortions are to save the life or health of the mother or terminate pregnancies where the fetus cannot survive birth or after birth. Many of the reasons for wanting an abortion include, that it would interfere with work, they cannot afford a child, and they are a single parent. Pro-choice activists only focus on the positives of being able to choose whether a woman can keep her baby. They don’t look at the risks that come with abortion like “shame, guilt, and regret” (Chittom & Newton, 2015). Abortion doesn’t only effect a woman mentally, but also physically. There is a possibility of death or complications when having an abortion. Anything can go wrong even if it is rare for it to happen. I don’t believe a woman should put her physical health at risk in order to kill her own baby. It sound harsh saying the word “kill”, but that is the reality. Pro-choice supporters try to shy away from using phrases like “killing” and “baby” because of how harsh it sounds. They would rather use words like “fetus”, “embryo” and “annihilate”. Using those word make the reality of killing an innocent baby seem less harsh. They bring up reasons to support their stance like stating that “a woman must have the power to control a decision as significant as parenthood, and that individuals should be able to influence decisions to the same extent that those decisions affect their lives” (Anderson, 2015). Pro-Life supporters extenuate the unethical practices in removing a child from the womb, assert the act of aborting as murder and that it violates religious beliefs. Even though the United States has ruled abortions to be legal, there is still controversy. One may say that this is a growing problem in our country. However, for every problem there should be a solution. Erika Bachiochi argues that: “The state's suppression of a woman's right to choose [was] simply a perpetuation of the patriarchal nature of our society...To free women from [the] gender hierarchy, women must have a right to do what they please with their bodies” (22). She says that women have always been suppressed of their rights, and men believe that they have more power than women. Bachiochi, as well as many other women, believe that they should have choice over something as simple as their own bodies. Every woman has the fundamental right to decide for herself, free from government interference, whether or not to have an abortion. Today, more than ever, American families do not want the government to trample on their right to privacy by mandating how they must decide on the most intimate, personal matters. That is why, even though Americans may differ on what circumstances for terminating a crisis pregnancy are consistent with their own personal moral views, on the fundamental question of who should make this personal decision, the majority of Americans agree that each woman must have the right to make this private choice for herself.
