When people worry about eating healthier food options the thought of unhealthy fruits and vegetables never comes across their mind. They do not know that most of what is written on that package or box are lies. The number one thing that people are not informed about is that “GMOs are in as much as 80% of conventional processed food” including fruits and vegetables (“GMO Facts”). Genetically modified organisms “are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering” (“GMO Facts”). In other words, scientists insert DNA from one specie into another which does not occur in nature.
Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe , but the U.S. supports it. The only reason GMOs exist is so that crops can be more resistant to pesticides, but the U.S. government blindly ignores the hundreds of other problems that they are continuously creating. Studies have shown that toxins and chemicals such as pesticides found in GMOs can cause “organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging, and infertility” (“10 Reasons”). Toxic insecticide produced by genes

in genetically modified food such as corn “was found in the blood of pregnant women and their unborn fetuses” (“10 Reasons”). Many disorders and diseases such as cancer, autism, food allergies, and reproductive and digestive disorders have increased in the past 9 years and are still accelerating. Ever since “GMOs were introduced in 1996” it became a contributing factor to the increase of “numerous health problems” (“10 Reasons”). Americans have every right to believe that genetically modified crops are not safe to eat. Especially since the government is not honest about the effects. Not only have GMOs created problems for humans over time but in one case death was the immediate cause. In the 1980s, “one hundred Americans were killed by L-tryptophan” which was a “contaminated supplement” used in protein-based foods (“What’s the”). The supplement also harmed another 8,000 American citizens by making them ill. Toxins such as MON810, MON863 and NK603, which are mostly used in corn varieties, are considerably used in the United States and have been studied to prove that they are reactive with the kidneys and liver which is why gastrointestinal and immune system disorders are a long term issue from consuming GMOs. A lot of material from genetically modified food can be found inside of us according to human studies which is why “The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) urges doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets for all patients” (“10 Reasons”). Genetically Modified Organisms not only affects humans and their health, but also wildlife and the environment.
Crops that produce pesticides “contaminate nearby streams” which ends up “affecting aquatic life” (“Dangers to”). Herbicides such as glyphosate have been found in streams and rivers and may contain toxic ingredients that can kill living organisms in the water. Weeds turn into “super weeds” when they adapt to herbicides and become resistant. “Super Weeds” increase the use of herbicide and “the benefits of herbicide resistant crops are diminished” or put to waste (“Dangers to”). These genetically modified varieties can develop harmless and beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies into pests. Many birds and insects are at risk from pesticides since the chemicals and toxins contaminate the pollen they
collect. The government ignores “most of the health and environmental risks of GMOs” because “the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t require a single safety study, does not mandate labeling of GMOs, and allows companies to put their GM foods onto the market without notifying the agency.” (“10 Reasons”). Scientists are attacked and threatened when they “discover problems with GMOs” because people get informed about the effects and stop buying GMO products which decreases the profit the government receives. Although, there are organizations that “[protect] the non-GMO food supply and [give] consumers an informed choice” (“GMO Facts”). There is a way for companies to stop using GM products and that is only if people stop buying their products since “GMOs gives no consumer benefits,” which will give farmers no choice but to stop growing them (“10 Reasons”). If a small percentage of people “start rejecting brands” containing GMOs then it “will become a marketing liability [and] food companies will kick them out” (“10 Reasons”). Buying organic, non-GMO and natural foods can be expensive and it is one of the many reasons people go for the processed foods, but they are paying for the quality of their food and essentially the quality of their life. By consuming GMOs, people are putting their life at risk and therefore should start buying products that are safe for themselves and their family. In conclusion, people can prevent any potential health risks and truly be healthy by avoiding any genetically altered products.
Genetically modified? That alone should be a cause for alarm, and have you wondering, what exactly is in this that I am eating? Yet every day millions of American’s choose to load up on food filled with GMO’s, and not even know it. First we must understand what GMO’s are. GMO’s are any organism whose genetics has been altered using genetic engineering. We should not be tampering with nature, and should try to grow organically as much as possible. There has not been enough research on GMO’s to know the potential long term effects it can have on us, so this is why GMO’s should be banned.
Food is an essential part of everyday life without it one could not survive. Every day we make choices on what we put in to our bodies. There are countless varieties of food to choose from to meet the diverse tastes of the increasing population. Almost all food requires a label explaining the ingredients and the nutritional value allowing consumers to make informed decisions on what they are consuming. However, many may not be considering where that food is coming from or how it has been produced. Unfortunately, there is more to food than meets the eye. Since 1992, “ the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled, based on woefully limited data, that genetically modified foods were ‘substantially equivalent’ to their non-GM counterparts” (Why to Support Labeling). GM food advocates have promised to create more nutritious food that will be able to grow in harsh climate conditions and eventually put an end to world hunger in anticipation of the growing population. There is very little evidence to support these claims and study after study has proven just the opposite. GM crops are not only unsafe to consume, but their growing practices are harmful to the environment, and multinational corporations are putting farmers out of business.
GMO`s are starting to rapidly take over our food supply, but what exactly is a GMO? A GMO is a make up of DNA that is combined forcefully with a plant or animals DNA, and creates a new version of it. Seeing these products sold in stores for the first time people question what the change is from the natural, and organics, because when someone reads GMO they wonder if it is healthy and safe to consume.
When you eat a cheeseburger, you might know that you are eating a beef patty with cheese, lettuce, and ketchup on a sesame seed bun, but do you know what you are really eating? According to the documentary GMO OMG, “approximately 85% of all processed foods contain GMOs”, yet most consumers are unaware that this secret ingredient is included in most of their food. Although Monsanto believes their product is safely feeding the world, consumers should be aware of the hidden horrors of genetically modified food because research indicates that GMOs could drastically affect their health as well as cause environmental damage, all while violating the rights of consumers and farmers.
Until the government creates mandates for issuing labels on foods that contain genetically modified ingredients, there are measures that can be taken by common citizens and supporters of GMO labeling in order to keep Americans safe in the meantime. Since “study after study points to potential health risks” (“Whole Foods Market”), supporters need to raise awareness amongst the rest of society in order to generate a large group that can begin to press the government to create a law to handle the issue. It is in “the state’s interest [to] protect consumers from false or potentially misleading communication or prevent consumers from suffering unwitting harms” (Adler). Moreover, the government must be the one to put an official end to the lack of
Food, everybody has to eat food. In this century there are millions of different foods that can be eaten. But sometimes while Americans indulge in the luxury options of foods, I wonder if they ever really pay attention to how bad many foods are for their bodies. I think everybody should turn to organic foods to help them live healthier lives. The reason that foods are so bad for the body to consume is because foods are packed with GMO’s. GMO’s are “genetically modified organisms” which are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses, or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur in nature, naturally (“GMO Facts,”2014).
You might have heard GMO thrown around by scientists or news stations before. It stands for genetically modified organism. This is a relatively new technology that has sparked a huge debate. Organisms are genetically modified by taking genes from one being and transferring them to another being in order to change the qualities of the resulting species. Now this seems like a very good thing, and in some ways it is, but it has some very serious consequences. When humans start to tamper with nature, trouble is never far away. The same is true for genetically modified foods and organisms.
How many of you hear the words “genetically modified food” and immediately think “BAD”? How many of you scorn the idea that genetically modified foods are useful? How many of you have been manipulated by the media to think that all biotechnology is evil? Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organisms that have been genetically spliced to achieve a certain trait. As the demand for a larger food supply is increasing due to population growth, the benefits that GMO foods provide are being hailed as the only solution to the food crisis. However, many people are making inadequately informed decisions, and are pushing them to the back shelf. I will inform you on why genetically modified organisms may be the only way to a stable, safe future for the less fortunate.
...ortation of plants, fruits, vegetables, and animals. Indiscriminate pesticide use kills the good with the bad. Long term and wide spread pesticide use poisons underground water sources, which, in turn, poison plants, animals, and humans. And, finally, by our uninformed actions, new super races of pests continue to evolve and create even greater dangers than the original.
Eating is extremely important, it is also important to eat healthy. Most Americans eat without any concerns; they are not questioning or researching what they are feeding themselves or their family. A lot of that has to do with their financial stability, not having the time to prepare a meal due to their time-consuming work schedule, also lack of knowledge and education on what they are consuming. In this bibliography, I will go over all three articles and explain what they are about.
The term GM foods or GMO (genetically-modified organisms) is most commonly used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology techniques (Whitman, 2000). These plants have been modified in the laboratory to offer desired traits such as increased resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional content. Also, genetic engineering techniques have been applied to create plants with the exact desired trait very rapidly and accurately. For example, this is done by the geneticist isolating the gene responsible for drought tolerance and inserts it into another plant. The new genetically-modified plant will now have gained drought tolerance as well.
If crops were affected by droughts, disease and insects, having destroyed many acres across America’s Midwest region, the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) would not be beneficial in regenerating new crops. Genetically modifying foods (GMOs) “are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding” (nongmoproject.org). Most research done has concluded no positive benefits in using GMOs. There are serious health risks associated with eating GM foods based on scientific research done around the world. The purpose of GMOs are to increase production of crop yield and reduce pesticide use but research says otherwise. If farmers wanted to continue using GMOs to produce crops, labeling should be mandatory to allow consumers to have a conscious choice whether or not to eat GM food. Through research it has been proven that the use of GMOs to increased production of crops during a time of drought or disease have no benefits, just risks.
An English doctor, named Arpad Pusztai, did a study on rats being fed genetically modified foods. His study found out that rats that ate genetically modified potatoes had pre-cancerous cells, smaller brains, smaller livers, smaller testicles, and damaged immune systems. After finding this out, he then changed the eating habits of the rats by interchanging between feeding them organic potatoes and genetically modified potatoes for two weeks at a time. He concluded that whenever the rats ate the organic potatoes, their symptoms disappeared, but when the rats ate the GMO potatoes again, the symptoms reappeared. Pusztai study isn’t the only that proves that GMOs are harmful. Other studies have also shown that GMOs are linked to reproductive problems, immune system problems, accelerated aging, gastrointestinal distress, and dysfunctional regulation. This proves that GMOs have a serious effect on our
“Genetically modified foods are a "Pandora's box" of known and unknown risks to humans and the environment. They have been forced onto the American public by multinational biotech and agribusiness corporations without adequate oversight and regulation by the United States government (Driscoll, SallyMorley, David C).”Genetically Modified Food is food which has been chemically altered by scientists during the production process to give the food more nutrients, better appearance, and a longer shelf-life (Rich, Alex K.Warhol, Tom). The importance of this issue is that these GMO’s can actually have a negative effect in our society in general. It could mutate in a negative way and cause cancer or other diseases. Genetically modified food should be strictly controlled due to its various detrimental effects on the environment, human health, and potentially insect/animal effects.
Genetically modified foods most commonly refers to the plants, which has been modified in the laboratory to enhance improved nutritional content and aimed traits created for human beings and animals. With progress in various types of technology, especially in genetic engineering, farmers and scientists have changed the way in which food is grown and made, raising questions about the methods, their risks and possible effects. It is not a secret that GMF-ed foods have spread out rapidly to the whole world. GMFs have raised concerns over their own beneficial in that they are resistant to diseases, produces greater yields, and it improves the nutrition of foods making the people unaware about their effects. Every time we go to any grocery stores or supermarkets, we would not know whether the vegetables, fruits or even meats being sold are genetically modified. To make this situation worse, most consumers do not pay much attention to what they are eating, when they are actually consuming modified foods.
