Older generations are accusing millennials (people born approximately 1984 and after) of being entitled, narcissistic, self interested, unfocused, and lazy. One of the people supporting this claim about millennials is Simon Sinek, who is a British/American author, motivational speaker and marketing consultant. He has written numerous bestseller books, and he has earned a Bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology from Brandeis University (“Simon Sinek”). In Sinek’s interview, he states that only things millennials want in life are to work in a place with purpose, make an impact on the world, and want free food and beanbags. He says, “Corporate environments care more about numbers than they do about the kids. They care more about the short term gains than the long term life of these young human-beings.” Sinek produces a persuading argument and explanation here, but he does not provide actual facts to back up his argument, and he over-generalizes corporate environments. For example, by saying, “They care more about…,” he is referring to all corporate environments. However, they are some corporate environments that care about their workers, for instance, Google. Google employees are given an abundance of job perks, such as free gourmet food, rides to and from work, on-site massages, free gym memberships, and so much more (Loudenback). Google also gives their employees flexibility to work on passionate projects and feed their creativity. Eighty-six percent of employees reported high job satisfaction (Loudenback). Therefore, Sinek needs to be more specific with his claims because he is making all corporate environments seem greedy and cruel. Sinek may have given his opinion on millennials to inform and educate millennials and other generations on the problems that are wrong with this generation, but in doing so, he also offended a lot of millennials. I am a millennial and felt offended by his interview because many of the points he argued are problems that are wrong with society, not just millennials. In addition, Sinek was not brought up in the same era as millennials, so he does not know what it was like to grow up during this time. It is very hard to tell from the article whether or not Matchar truly believes what is written in support of millennials. Perhaps it is a parody of the earlier generations to say “Be selfish, Gen Y! Be entitled!” (235), but she seems to contradict her earlier statements. The constant repetition that millennials are lazy, unwilling to work, etc paints a bleak picture of their futures for the whole world. Millennials are often portrayed as spoiled rich people who still rely heavily on their parents for everything. This makes them seem childish, and Matchar’s questionable usage of these terms nonetheless is an obvious jab at the poster minority. This spoiled generation has hit a wall called life and is currently trying to find a way to get over it. The workplace has been a brutal environment for generations now. The millennials, also known as Generation Y, are not the first generation to want change in the workplace, but they are the first ones to be brave enough to step up and place their demands over their own job. By this generation's standards, they want to achieve higher education and travel, things that will set them back financially which has been made as a point to their change in the expected time for adulthood. The myth of the millennial nation is one that describes the vision and perception held by the American people that suggests that the United States is the Nation responsible for heralding in the second coming of Jesus Christ. Hughes ties this vision to the American idea of manifest destiny which held much responsibility for our nation's growth and overpowering force, not merely in our hemisphere but in all of the world.
Millennials are accused of being tough to manage, behaving entitled, unfocused, lazy, narcissistic; however, they seek to have a purpose that they love and make an impact. Yet, the more they receive, they are not happy. Millennials are well on their way to redefining the “American Dream.” In a world where they have to constantly exercise critical thinking to financially survive the debts the average Millennial life incurs, suggesting that their reluctance to fall into the status quo will hurt them is a stagnant, inflexible view. It only hurts those entrenched in a narrow worldview limited to one accepted lifestyle and standard of living. To this life, Millennials are thoroughly disillusioned. They’re causing all these economic ‘problems’ because they aren’t buying into the hazy suburban complacency that the traditional dream represents. It’s not just that it costs too much to get there, it’s mostly that it’s hardly achievable. Contemporary high school is less of a system for education as it is an Olympic triathlon. Students must jump through every well-nigh arbitrary hoop, competing against each other for the most scholarship money based on the right opinion said in the right words. When the Baby Boomer generation was questioned about the newer generation, these words and phrases was often used: “slacker”, “lazy”, “has it easy”, “entitled”, “obsessed with their phones/internet/games” and “antisocial”. On the other hand, Millennials (or Generation Y) would say this about their older counterpart: “entitled”, “ruined it for those who followed”, “had it easier”, “narcissists”, “stubborn”, and “materialistic”. In his May 2013 editorial for Time Magazine, “Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation,” Joel Stein explains his viewpoint on millennials, defined as people born 1980 through 2000. Using an occasionally humorous tone, Stein summarizes the typical bleak view that older people have for the younger generation, before offering what he believes is closer to the truth. In the end, he decides that while millennials are not without their flaws and vices, a lot of the fears that older people are mostly due to the advanced technology that we are now dealing with. By the end of the article, it is my opinion that Stein makes a very fair summarization and is correct in his idea that to write off the entire generation is unfair towards younger people.
We blame the millennials for their behavior and their different characteristics compared to previous generations; however, what if we stop looking at the millennials and start looking at the reasons that they behave sensitively? Each generation contains their differences, including the way they educate the next generation.
