One thing that is essential in any type of government, pertaining to people, is defense. The ability to protect something that one cares about, whether it be laws or people, shows how important it is. Being able to protect the US population against a common enemy is necessary for the continual success of the United States. Similarly, by allowing the national government to take control of the military, the rights of the people will be defended because the government works for the people. By supporting the proposed Constitution, this essay will argue that the Constitution establishes a government that adequately supports our national defense.
It is important to having standing armies to defend the people of a nation against foreign or domestic invasions. In order to successfully defend the well-being of Americans there needs to be a standing army ready to engage the enemies of the United States within a moment’s notice. These critics posit that standing armies become a tool for tyranny. In Antifederalist paper: No 10, Brutus argues that “[G]reater danger, is to be apprehended from their overturning the constitutional powers of the government, and assuming the power to dictate any form they please.” I can understand Brutus’s position because it may seem as if the power of the military would be completely under the president. However, as Montesquieu explains, “power should be a check to power,” and by the proposed Constitution there is a system where each part of the government will be able to perform checks and balances which will prevent the government from infringing on the rights of people.
