The More Guns, The More Violence
Just in the US there are over 100,000 people shot each year. 72 perecent of all violent killings use guns as the weapon. 40 percent of US homes have guns, 57 percent of people in which do have guns believe there should be major restrictions or a ban on guns. In January 2016, Obama announced new actions on gun control, these actions include an update and expansion on background checks. The Supreme Court held a collective right that to own guns is a purpose for maintaining a militia. There should be more gun control laws because it would help reduce the high rate of violent crimes. More laws need to be made to protect oneself from harm of others.
First off, more gun control laws are needed to protect from domestic abusers and stalkers. Abusers and stalkers are most likely to carry weapons on them because they will have more “control” over the person they are harming. For instance, when the victim is being attacked him/her cannot defend himself because the abuser has the control. “A 2003 study of 23 populous high-income countries found that 86% of

women killed by firearms were in the United States and American women are 11.4 times more likely to be the victims of gun homicides” ( pro 4 “Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted?”). Mostly woman being attacked by someone who has a weapon will want to do anything the offender is commanding, if they do not they will end up being killed. No matter where a person is they should not have to feel like they are going to be attacked. To continue, there are so many violent crimes committed and very few were able to protect himself from the crimes. For example, there are about more than 29 million crimes committed in which only “0.79 percent (235,700) of victims protected themselves” (Pro 5 “Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted?”). Guns are improperly used all the time, legally owned guns are mostly stolen and used by criminals. In 2005-2010, 1.4 million guns were stolen and used to harm others. If there was more laws on gun control, criminals would not be able to steal and guns would most likely be in a safe place or hidden. Children's safety is number one but owners of guns do not keep their guns in a safe place. For example, most of children’s safety is threatened because one-third of gun owners with children under six years old have a firearm in an unlocked location. Many children and some adults may see a gun and will not know whether it is a real gun or fake. Children will often think the gun is fake and start playing with the weapon and something serious could happen such as someone getting shot or the child holding the gun will get severely hurt. Concealed weapons do not make our society safer. In Gun Control: Opposing Viewpoints Series by Tamara L. Roleff, she states, “ Guns are 43 times more likely to kill its owner or relative than an actual intruder” (55). It is understandable how one can believe that having a weapon on them will make them feel more safe and secured but it usually ends up the opposite way. Also in Gun Control: Opposing Viewpoints Series, Roleff presents that, “ 12 percent of law enforcement officers are even killed by their own service weapon” (55). That is a low percent but that should not be the case at all. Officers have a gun for a reason to protect himself and the surroundings. The presence of a gun can make conflicts more likely to become very violent. For example, “The FBI found that in 2013, arguments, such as romantic triangles, brawls fueled by alcohol or drugs, and arguments over money, resulted in 1,962 gun deaths (59.9% of the total)” (pro 11 “Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted?”). Just because of a gun being present in the moment of the arguments, there were many deaths. Many people have anger management issues and them having a gun present would not make things safe, especially if there is alcohol or drugs involved. This leads to stronger background checks, there would be a file that had lists of people with mental illnesses. Many people are against gun control because people think it will not stop criminals from breaking the laws or obtain guns.
They think that gun control has no effect on crime rates because the areas with high crime rates were the areas with the most gun control laws. In the excerpt, this quote states,“If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns” (“Should more gun control laws be enacted?”). This excerpt is explaining that people will rebel no matter how many laws there are. The states with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crime. People believe that, “gun control laws such as background checks and micro stamping are an invasion of privacy” (con 7 “Should more gun control laws be enacted?”). This would require the government to keep personal information on gun owners, like their name and criminal records, or mental
illnesses. Most people would agree that there should be more gun control laws. If there are more laws there may be less guns. There would be much stronger background control. In the article “Background on Gun Control”, it states that, “guns sold at gun shows through dealers are subject to background checks, if they are sold privately they do not need a background check”. It is still dangerous to buy a gun from a private owner so there should still be background checks for anyone buying any type of firearm no matter if privately owned or a dealer. In the article, “What’s next on Gun Control: Obama and the Loopholes”, Obama says, “expanding definition to a broad universe of transferring guns must perform background checks”. Anyone should have to do background checks to buy any type of weapon, even federally licensed dealers need criminal background checks. Guns sold privately are more subject to be criminals since they are not being checked in any way. If there are stronger background checks it will be harder for people to buy guns because it will dig deep into the person's records. After all being said, there definitely should be more gun control laws to help others be secured and safe. The safety of children especially because they do not know how to work guns and they do not know whether or not the gun is real or fake. The higher amount of death crimes will decrease majorly if there are higher laws. If the government is more strict on the laws that they make, there would not be fear of someone trying to harm anybody.
Left, right, Liberal, Conservative, Democratic, Republican. There are a lot of synonyms for the sides of our nation divided. Divided on many things: religion, political views, morals, etc.. For a nation that prides ourselves on extraordinary security and unity, it is quite ironic that so many issues can cause such distress and uproar within communities. One such issue is gun control. As a white male in a middle-lower class family that has never owned a gun, I may be somewhat biased. Objectively as I can, I am going to report the facts and more importantly, try to find the core issues at play.
The myth is that most Americans believe that a gun ban will protect their families and loved one from violence and other forms of danger but in actuality, most Americans are pro second amendment understanding a gun ban has the reverse effect. What gun ban advocates do not regularly acknowledge is that more restrictive gun laws do not incentivize criminals to give up their guns. Chicago & Washington are prime examples of highly restrictive gun zones with skyrocketing crime. The law abiding citizen is defenseless against a criminal who disregards the law. This issue is not only domestic; UK burglary, assault, and other crime are increasing with & without guns. A criminal who wants to commit a crime will commit a crime with whatever he can legally or illegally get his hands on. When a crime is committed with a knife, the media does not call it “knife crime”. That’s because in a court of law, each is held accountable for their actions, not the object. Why are guns any different? This is because there is a misunderstanding about guns, violence & the correlation. There are a plethora of attempted crimes not reported because of a second amendment wielding law abiding citizen protected themselves and deterred the would be criminal. Statistics are not usually discussed about the positive stories of the feared tool deterring violence on a daily basis. The solution to fluctuating violence is not a simple answer. Rampant, out of control government spending leads to inflation, while expensive over legislation drains and weakens the economy which causes weaker purchasing power and increa...
In the United States of America, control and access to guns should be limited. In the article “The Case for Gun Control”, written by Fareed Zakaria, makes a very broad reasoning on why access to guns should be limited to Americans. The article explains how Americans are taking advantage of gun usage and how easy it is to access it. The United States has the highest crime rate in the world. Having high crime rates can lead to innocent people losing their lives because of the twisted people who are getting easy access to weapons. Even though there are many laws that are passed to prevent such chaos, the people are not obeying them. Gun violence immediately needs to be managed because people need to feel safe living in our nation and our crime rates need to be lowered drastically.
Those against guns might simply say that removing guns entirely would substantially lower crime rates. They are upset that criminals can illegally obtain firearms just as easily as law abiding citizens can obtain legal firearms. Having absolutely no gun control would most likely result in more violent crime and shootings. With no gun control, this means that anybody can legally obtain a firearm. Currently, all states employ a system of background checks that every individual must mass before they are permitted to purchase a firearm. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 was an amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
“It is estimated that there are 310 million non – military guns in America” (O’Brien and Stanton). Many people that own a firearm usually have more than one gun. Also, a majority of gun owners feel that owning a firearm is the best way to protect themselves at home. With the large number of guns said to be in America, there needs to be a way to prevent the number of frequently occurring mass shootings. The solution to this issue is called gun control. Gun control needs to be implied more in our society because gun related crimes are mostly committed by those diagnosed with mental illnesses, there is no contradiction with the second amendment, it has the ability to lower the amount of mass shootings in the United States, and universal background checks help prevent mass shootings.
Today in the United States many people argue over the fact of guns being legal or illegal. There are people using guns for personal safety and there are others who use them for crimes, as well as for other situations. Firearm deaths in the United States have slowly been decreasing from year to year with all these bills getting passed to promote a safer country than ever before. Guns are the main weapon for youth suicide, school shootings, and for committing murder. In 2010 there were 2,711 infants, child, and teenage firearm deaths. As in school shootings and in committing murder, studies show shooters often had multiple, non-automatic guns, shootings were planned, most youth tell before shooting, shooters have a history of being bullied or threatened, shooters have mental issues, and shooters have done suicidal gestures before (Gun Control with School Shootings). Although there are people who use guns for murdering, there are also those who oppose guns being used without the proper requirements. 85% of all respondents to the survey supporting requiring states to report people to national background-checks systems who are prohibited from owning gu...
Imagine you are a little boy, a boy no older than six year olds, getting ready to for school. Your blue backpack rests on your shoulders as you approach the red labyrinth, both embracing you while simultaneously encroaching you. Suddenly, a harsh metallic booming sound erupts, and after a mere sliver in time, you lay dead on the floor in a pool of blood. Unfortunately, the course of action just envisioned is not merely hypothetical. Scores of innocent individuals are part of massacres done by the mentally ill with legally bought guns, guns made for war, guns made to maximize death and horror. In terms of reducing violence, the increase in gun regulation is essential in ending the gun violence epidemic
Gun violence in America is a public health crisis, which needs to be recognized and changed by legislatures, and the voting American. As conscious Americans, we need to vote for changes to gun laws that would improve background checks nation-wide, make firearm registration mandatory, restrict the sale of assault weapons and weapon modifications that give the shooter military-grade fire power, and invest in gun-safe technology and safe firearms storage designs. This type of technology will help prevent criminally oriented people from accessing guns, and will help prevent the accidental deaths of many children by guns. This essay will explain the reforms needed to help ensure Americans can still exercise their 2nd amendment right of owning firearms, and preventing the unnecessary deaths of many Americans at the same time.
There is an American consensus for some form of gun control. “…[F]irearms were involved in two-thirds of all murders in the United States and [t]he United States leads the world's richest nations in gun deaths…murders, suicides, and accidental deaths due to guns - according to a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the International Journal of Epidemiology” (Lepore). There might be some far extreme people who think that all guns should be banned but most sane Americans do not think that gun rights should be abolished. Americans regard self-defense as the most compelling reason to have a gun and twenty-two percent of households have handguns in the United States. However many people do think that gun control laws must be enacted and enforced. Pro-gun extremists and the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) must understand that there is a real for many people at the uncontrolled s...
The debate over gun control in America has constantly brought up over the years due to gunmen killing large amounts of civilizations in shootings. From Columbine to Sandy Hook or the shootings of the two reporters in West Virginia, these public shootings are occurring everywhere. Lawmakers and civilians alike are pushing for increased gun control in hopes of preventing the same tragedies. Anybody that has been affected by the shootings have been pushing Congress and state governments to force new sanctions on government. With the past three years, Congress has shot down all the laws despite the large amounts of public support. Adding more gun control isn’t going to stop the mass shootings from happening.
Every day some news related to gun violence are being heard all over the world. Shooting in driveway, public places, schools, homicide and suicide are some of different types of gun violence. Shooting on people and killing them is a big issue in the world and different comments are provided about that. One of the most important of them is about gun control laws. Stingl (2013) says “The term gun control as it is used in the United States refers to any action taken by the federal government or by state or local governments to regulate, through legislation, the sale, purchase, safety, and use of handguns and other types of firearms by individual citizens.” According to this idea gun control laws should be stricter and people should not be able to have access to guns easily. However, there are many other people who believe this idea is not a good solution and never help. This essay will demonstrate for and against views about the topic. People who agree with this idea consider: firstly, stricter laws will reduce violence and gun control means crime control. Secondly, some research shows people with gun are more at risks of getting shot. Thirdly, guns can always be misused by their owners and finally, stricter law is the best and the faster way to control crime and make community safe. While opponents say first of all, guns are necessary for people safety and protection. Secondly, guns are not the only tools for killing and violence; there are other weapons too and finally, gun ownership is human rights.

Thousands of lives are lost every day due to some form of violence with the involvement of firearms. People varying from an adolescent age to the elderly are robbed of the likelihood to live a long and promising life due to the gun violence in this country. The abuse and misuse of guns cause caused a stain of blood to run through the country as the citizens of this country have taken it upon themselves to ruin and end others lives. Stricter gun laws should be in place as the lapse in gun control has caused an epidemic of gun violence in the United States.
“To gun control advocates, the numbers show for much stricter laws”. (Rhee). Gun control advocates also say that assault weapons should only be used by police and military and absolutely need to be out of the hands of criminals and mentally unstable people. (Rhee). In a study on gun crimes involving assault weapons during the federal ban found that the crime declined between 17 and 72 percent in the selected six cities, Anchorage, Baltimore, Boston, Miami, Milwaukee and St. Louis, but they found no decline in crimes committed with other guns. (Fallis).
Between 1999 and 2013 there were a total of 464,000 gun deaths. Of said deaths, 270,237 of them were suicides, 174,773 homicides, and 9,983 unintentional deaths. The United States, by far, leads the world in deaths via firearms. The connection between how easy it is to gain access to firearms and the number of firearm related deaths is undeniable. Countries such as Japan, Canada, UK, Norway and others are stricter on gun control and it shows in the statistics. For every 100,000 people there 3.54 homicides in the US versus most of the countries listed previously are less than one. In order to prevent mass shootings and violence the United States must put in place laws making it more difficult to obtain firearms.
