When many people think of using marijuana, the image of Woodstock, “Cheech and Chong” or Willy Nelson immediately pops into their heads, but marijuana isn’t just used to have a good time. Marijuana has generally been used recreationally. In recent years, however, research has found new ways to implement its effects. Marijuana has the ability to help bring comfort to patiens who have nausea and appetite loss, chronic pain, and mental disorders. I believe that marijuana should be legalized, not for recreation, but for the betterment of the lives of people suffering from illnesses throughout the United States. Marijuana has been used for medicinal purposes for over the 3,000 years and has been met with much resistance in the recent decade (Bearman 12). In the early part of the century, marijuana, also known as cannabis, was a part of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) for about 90 years, but drug companies began to drop marijuana from medications when the 1937 Marihuana Tax Act was passed (4-6). Medical marijuana can be used in two ways; it can be smoked in a cigarette form or taken in a capsule. Marijuana’s most potent ingredient is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can be taken as a pill, but is “easily …show more content…
absorbed and acts quickly” when it is in its vapor (Economist 5). However, there is also reasoning as to why the U.S. government is cautious about legalizing this drug. In spite of medical marijuana being able to help those suffering from illness, it can possibly possibly damage the health of the people who turn to this “harmless” drug for relief from their already harmful afflictions (Kraus 11). In his article, Kraus has brought attention to the fact that marijuana possesses just as many “toxic or carcinogenic compounds” as tobacco and may lead to lung cancer and emphysema (4). Marijuana is used to relieve pain from patients with HIV-AIDS wasting syndrome, but a marijuana cigarette has “over four times the amount of tar” and a “higher concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons” and can put those with an already compromised respiratory system at greater risk (4). Since cannabis has blood pressure reducing properties, it may cause those with cardiovascular diseases to have “tachycardia and abrupt changes in blood pressure” and can result in the death of the user. (6) While this may be true, marijuana still regained its popularity in the medical world for its use by cancer and AIDS patients to help relieve nausea caused by chemotherapy and to increase the appetite of those with wasting syndrome. Patients who have severe cases of wasting syndrome use cannabis as a last-resort drug and use it to "gain the right kind of weight" (Economist 11). Due to the plants well-known appetite inducing abilities, it is possible to "restore lean tissue" to patients left emaciated from AIDS (10). The government recognized its medicinal benefits and created the Compassionate Investigational New Drug program (IND) from 1978 to 1992 (Bearman 11). In this program, AIDS patients would receive 300 marijuana cigarettes composed of 0.9 grams of cannabis every month, but the government was quick to end the program when “too many people were applying” (11). Marijuana has also been used in cases of mental disorders to lessen the effects of the disorder. Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can benefit from cannabis because their disorder can be set off at any moment; whether it be a firework or a car alarm, it can send them back into a mental warzone (Bearman 25). Above all, marijuana can help bring them a sense of security and ease, since the plant is known for its euphoric state inducing properties. People who suffer from ADD, panic attacks, and Tourette’s syndrome can find marijuana’s effects to be calming to their ever-running minds (24). Finally, millions around the world are afflicted with chronic pain and disorders that accompany it. Much like its uses for panic attacks, cannabis can be used to control the symptoms of severe headaches. Migraine sufferers have reported lesser pain and for some, even the prevention of migraines all together (Bearman 22). A headache is caused by an overload of neurotransmitters being sent in the brain and the only solution is to slow down the speed of the impulses with a chemical reaction produced by cannabis, dopamine (32). Chronic pain is a side effect of many diseases, such as Multiple Schlerosis (MS) and Arthritis, but they can be treated with smoking marijuana. Cannabis has been shown to be able to “relieve tremor and unsteadiness of gait” and “limit muscle pain and spasticity” in patients with MS. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help those with excruciating arthritis. I support the legalization of medical marijuana in hopes that it will help better the quality of life to those who have protected our country and have found their life cut short due to terminal illnesses.
In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson stated that all Americans are entitled to “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” However, since using the drug medicinally isn’t legal everywhere in the U.S., its users are at the risk of losing the liberty to better their quality of life and their pursuit of happiness. The people who turn to this drug for comfort are left at the mercy of the disease they suffer from, even though they can find relief by smoking or taking medicinal marijuana to lessen their pain, nausea, or mental
illnesses.
In the first few centuries of medicinal cannabis use (between 1600 and 1900) the drug was increasingly being used in a vast array of areas. This era may be considered the time of greatest usage of the substance (Grinspoon, 2005). During these years, marijuana was prescribed for many conditions including depression, skin inflammation, relief for coughing, urinary incontinence (or the involuntary release of urine), rabies, rheumatism, epilepsy, tetanus, painful nerve issues, convulsions, asthma, postpartum psychosis, gonorrhea, chronic b...
Marijuana in America became a popular ingredient in many medicinal products and was openly sold in pharmacies in the late nineteenth century (“Busted-America’s War on Marijuana Timeline”). The National Institute of Drug Abuse defines marijuana as, “The dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant Cannabis sativa, which contains the psychoactive (mind-altering) chemical delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), as well as other related compounds” (“DrugFacts: Marijuana”). It was not until the Food and Drug act of 19...
Marijuana is one of the oldest cultivated plants (Nahas 8). Since it became illegal in 1967, there have been questions of whether or not it is good for purposes, such as medicine, other than being a leisure drug. Debates between pro and con groups for the use of marijuana in the medical profession, have been heated and in recent months, referendums have been pasted in a least three states to make it accessible for medical treatment. Personally, I feel that marijuana has the potential to be a significant help with certain aliments, however, more research needs to be done to maximize its potential.
Marijuana has a greater beneficial impact on society then many people realize. Marijuana should be legalized for medical as well as recreational purposes. This is a highly controversial issue that is being debated throughout the country. In essence marijuana is evaluated by the effectiveness of the drug. It is defined as the dried flowered clusters and leaves of a hemp plant smoked for the intoxicating effect. Whether it should be legalized or not is the real question.
People should stop arguing about the use of marijuana and how marijuana is bad, because people only like to research the cons instead of including the pros. Despite the fact that people believe everything they hear, they should look up more and try to see how good marijuana can be for them. Marijuana is good for their health, and it has helped to cure people who are very ill. Marijuana is less harmful than tobacco or alcohol, there has been studies proven that people have died over drinking other than by smoking marijuana. Marijuana will be able to have less people prosecuted for the possession of carrying it around, which will help people not get arrested for a small amount of marijuana.
Medical Marijuana: Why or Why not? Marijuana was first introduced by the Chinese back in the B.C (before Christ) time period where it existed as a substance that carried the ability to achieve euphoria or a “high” as we refer to it today. In the early 4200s B.C. Marijuana was better known for its medicinal value where it was being used to treat rheumatism, gout and malaria (Narcocon International). Of course, society at the time was aware of the other effects marijuana had, however at the time, they primarily focused on the medication capacity marijuana contained. Fast forward to 2015, where the medical use of marijuana is the biggest controversial topic, where society views marijuana more of a harmful substance than a solution to nearly all of the medical conditions people encounter.
Marijuana can help people. It can help cure illness, and at the very least can be vital in alleviating suffering, as it has for those like young Charlotte Figi, whose constant, life threatening seizures were
The debate on Medical marijuana has been a controversial subject mainly because people have an abundance of opinions and very little scientific research to back up either side of the debate. The most important question here is “will medical marijuana be used for medical purposes or will it be used inappropriately?”

The decriminalization of marijuana has been an intense debate since the end of the prohibition era. Although congress has their reasons for not legalizing marijuana, they are most likely clinging to their personal beliefs and failing to face the facts when it comes to this hot issue. Marijuana should be legalized because the cost of keeping marijuana illegal is expensive, prohibiting the use of it does not help the problem of over usage, and people deserve the freedom to use marijuana.
Should Marijuana Be Legalized? In society today, many people look for a feeling of freedom. Many people go on vacation and spend money. The most common escape for people is drugs. Our American society is facing a tremendous drug problem. In order to eradicate the drug problem, a public debate is going on to find some solutions to this drug dilemma. It has become a highly controversial issue whether drugs such as marijuana should be legalized or not. Some people advocate this issue and believe that legalization is the only solution left for the nation while others oppose because it will increase the number of drug users and drug related crimes. Marijuana is a drug that is illegal in the United States. This drug as you know is bad and causes severe side effects to your brain and body. Scientist have found that smoking marijuana can cause you to loose your memory. Marijuana has many psychological and physical effects.
To the AIDS or cancer patient, marijuana is the plant that fights nausea and appetite loss. To the nutritionist, its seed is second only to the soybean in nutritional value and is a source of cooking oil and vitamins. To the paper or cloth manufacturer, it is the plant that provided much of our paper and clothing for hundreds of years and produces four times more fiber per acre than trees. To the environmentalist, it is the plant that could greatly slow deforestation, restore robbed nutrients by other crops, and help prevent erosion. Preliminary findings show the drug may prove effective against glaucoma and asthma, and control such side nausea in cancer treatment. I concretely believe that marijuana should be legalized in the United States, primarily for the use of medicinal purposes. In technical or for the average American, marijuana, it is used only for recreational purposes. I think marijuana is a plant that could save many lives if it was made legal. My goal is to reverse prejudices, relieve ignorance, and inform people of the known and potential therapeutic uses of this remarkable plant.
Marijuana continues to be one of the most used illegal drugs in the United States. Marijuana has been used for many years and at one time was legal to consume. Throughout the years, marijuana has been used for treatment of different medical conditions and has been used recreationally by people of all ages. While the use of medicinal marijuana has proven to be effective in treating medically ill patients, society continues to question its recreational use and the long term effects it will have on its users. Some feel that legalizing marijuana will only open up avenues for the use of more potent drugs, causing an increase in criminal activity. However, a number of people question why it is considered illegal being it is a naturally growing
The legalization of marijuana is a controversial topic, but marijuana should be legalized because it has many positive effects and there is a lot of evidence to support why marijuana should be legalized in all states. Marijuana is a preparation of the cannabis plant and it can be used as a drug or as medicine. The primary component of cannabis is THC (Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol). This drug has mind-altering and physiological side effects when consumed. Marijuana can be used for spiritual reasons or recreationally. It is the third most popular recreational drug used in America, referring to “About Marijuana.” According to government surveys, more than 14 million Americans, out of 25 million Americans who have smoked marijuana within the past year, use marijuana habitually. Although marijuana is illegal in most
