Journal Article 1
Animals such as dogs, cats, and so on are often viewed as part of the family to many pet owners worldwide. There are many reasons for why humans view companion animals, such as dogs or cats, as part of the family. For instance, some view companion animals as a surrogate for a human. The dog may help a human who lives alone and wants a companion at home. Others feel it gives the human an opportunity to be in an elite group like a breed specific group if the owner has a pure breed dog. Furthermore, humans may have a dog breed that is socially constructed to be aggressive, so it can be a guard dog. Pets can lead to social acceptance, more friends, and so on. Besides, there is a multitude of reasons why one has a companion animal. With all those reasons, it is not studied to the extent that it should be.

Some 60 percent of United States households contains pets (Sanders, 1990), with that number being over half it reveals how much animals impact everyday life. The companion animals are often part of many people’s identity. According to Sanders, a sociologist, says, “companion animals… represent the social identity of the owner.” The animal shapes their identity in many ways. Many people talk to their dog the same way they would talk to another human. It seems unimagined to go home and not see the dogs or cats in the house. The animals are often taken care of like a baby by being bathed, fed, taken outside, et cetera. Most feel their animal does not judge them for the things they take part in, something that people long for: unconditional
“As the birthrate dropped, pets came to take the place of children in some families.” I think this means that pets are basically replacing children in some people's lives. In his article, Bilger says that a man refused to come back from Europe when his son died of a brain tumor, but he had a vet flown in when his dog got cancer. He cared more about his dog than his child.
First Friend: A History of Dogs and Humans, by Katherine Rogers, articulates the history of the relationship between dogs and humans. Wild Justice: The Moral Lives of Animals, by Marc Bekoff and Jessica Pierce, investigates if and how dogs exhibit morality. In both texts, anecdotes and observations are used to portray instances of dogs displaying cooperation, empathy, altruism, and, by extension, morality. Consequently, it stands to reason that dogs have a capacity for sociality, but how can the sociality of dogs be described? A dog’s capacity for sociality is the ability to form long term relationships with members of the same or other species. Dogs, in particular, dogs who hunt as well as dogs who play, are able to form long term relationships with humans and other dogs through trust, love,
It can be a companion, an aide, or both. Pet dogs are loyal and make wonderful company, and an emotional support dog creates bountiful joy, but a service dog is much more. A service dog not only serves the same role as a pet, but creates a safer environment for its owner. Without the service dog it would be much harder for the owner to get around on a daily basis indecently. However service dogs and their owners are discriminated against because people are skeptical of the dog’s legitimacy, but instead the service dogs and their owners should be respected and treated as
In 2017, an innocent passenger named Marlin Jackson was mauled by a lab mix on a Delta flight. The dog was sitting in the lap of the man next to Jackson. Trapped by the window, Jackson was attacked in the face two times by the dog, resulting in facial wounds that required twenty-eight stitches. In the last few years, the popularity of emotional support animals continues to grow.
Imagine wanting not a puppy, but a tiger for your birthday, imagine the expenses of that tiger and the dangers and hazards of owning that tiger. Do you really think it’s a good idea to get that tiger? No, it’s not. It’s a lot of work, and it’s also very dangerous. Exotic animals are not good to buy and have. If you buy that cute tiger, it will eventually grow up and not be so cute, it will be dangerous and strong, it’s also a wild animal and it’s very unpredictable, also there are many diseases you can catch from that tiger, and there are many dangers of having that tiger as well. Dogs are common throughout the world, either as a domestic pet, a protector on a farm, or an assistant for hunting amongst others. Regardless of the reason for having a dog, most people have either owned one for themselves or have known somebody who has owned one at some point in their life. Despite the relative normality of having a dog in your life in one way or another, the reasons for dogs coming into existence are not common knowledge among most people. Throughout a great portion of mankind’s history, dogs have been an essential part of life. The truth is, dogs were actually created in part by man.
You wake up in the hospital, look around, and find a doctor hovering nearby declaring that you have just suffered through a heart attack; affirming that if not for your dog, you would have died. You remember back to earlier that day: sitting on the couch, feeling a little off, hearing your dog barking, sensing him nudging you, going to the phone to call the ambulance, and having your dog by your side until you were safe inside the aluminum walls of the emergency vehicle. Although it sounds abnormal that a dog would be the one to save someone’s life, situations similar to the one above are not uncommon. Dogs and other household pets have been shown to be able to detect medical emergencies, including heart attacks and seizures, in their owners.
As the sun came into view, I rushed out of bed and into the living room. My dogs followed me like a pack of wolves. I immediately lead them outside the back door where there is a fenced area, so they could use the restroom. Once they finished their business outside; they ran up the stairs and into the house. Sometimes my dogs are excessively loud with their mouths. Whenever they are out of dog food or need more water they let me know by barking. It is one of their ways of communication. The way they stare into my eyes with joy is another form of communication. Taking care of a dog is not difficult; however, they do take immense responsibility. Now that I know how much responsibility it takes to own a dog, I can use it in the future.
Over 71 million American households (62%) have a pet, and most people think of their pets as members of the family. Some research studies have found that people who have a pet have healthier hearts, stay home sick less often, make fewer visits to the doctor, get more exercise, and are less depressed. Pets may also have a significant impact on allergies, asthma, social support, and social interactions with other people (Casciotti) .
... and faithfulness that cannot be found from any other source. Even the most hardened of hearts can be touched by a cold wet nose or a comforting snuggle. Pets seem to be able to recognize and adapt to many of the conditions placed on them in our human environment. They can provide the sense of companionship, and love that is lacking in regular human relationships.
Your parents have probably told you from a young age that if you don’t want to do something, then doesn’t do it. How would you feel if someone was coming at you with chains and whips forcing you to perform in front of an audience, after you made it clear that you didn’t want to perform? This is exactly what animals across have to endure on a daily schedule. The first zoo in the US opened on July 1st, 1875 in Philadelphia, 140 years later the treatment in animals in zoos has not changed dramatically.
In 2011, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) euthanized the majority of dogs and cats that had been taken into its shelter. Of the 760 dogs taken into the shelter, 713 of them were killed, 19 were adopted and 36 were transferred to other shelters. Of the 1,211 cats taken into the shelter, 1,198 were euthanized, five were adopted, and eight were transferred to other shelters. Of the 58 other animals, such as rabbits, the PETA shelter had taken in, 54 of them were killed. Yet, this is not an isolated incident.
Dogs give people a reason to ‘come home’ after a long day of work, or at least something to look forward after sitting in a classroom all day. Two, after always being judged on how we look, how wealthy we are, it is nice to have someone who does not care about all those things, and will still love you . Dogs always have a way with cheering people up whether it is a nice cuddle session or a fun game of fetch, when you do a favor of cheering up your dog, you may also be cheering yourself up!
A dogs behavior is significantly more desirable than a cats. A dog is loving and friendly most of the time and enjoys a good belly rub as a reward. If you try and scratch a cats belly, the cat will try to scratch and bite you. A dog is incomparably easier to train than a cat. You can teach a dog to do anything from bringing you your newspaper to the simplest command, sit. As a result of being able to train a dog, a dog goes to the bathroom outside, leaving no stench behind in your house. Whereas, a cat uses a litter box to go to the bathroom, there is always a stench in your house. Dogs are also far better with children. Dogs form a far greater bond with newborn babies, and often times do not leave the child’s crib side. Also, a trained dog will not cause destruction to your house, while you cannot train a cat to not use their sharp little claws to tear at the side of your couches, and rip and shred all the way down your curtains. Dogs also do not jump places where most cats jump, such as in your lap on your laptop, or on your dinner table at dinner. A dog won’t be a surprise first thing in the morning laying in your bathroom sink either. A dog will lay nex...
If one already has too many responsibility’s, he or she will not have enough time to take care of another life. Animals can be great to teach kids responsibilities at a young or to teach a couple before he or she decides on having a baby. With the increase of technology, people have less and less responsibilities to take on. Pets can teach one if he or she would be good at taking care of animals. Consistency is key to taking care of a pet and consistency is what responsibility is about. Consistency is important to learn so one may continue to be responsible for others. It is also helpful in everyday life whether one wants to learn an instrument, or one would like to have a family to take care of. Pets are a stepping stone to a more consistent and responsibly human
