Athletics are a huge part of our civilization, so what would come about if sports were revoked from the students? Athletic programs provide students with superior alternatives to a number of the activities that take place in our world, such as getting into trouble with the law or abusing drugs. Not only does it give students a protected atmosphere, it assists and crafts student’s potential, which most prestigious schools look for when beginning the admission process. Sports give students the motivation to keep their performance in the classroom up so that they can continue to play. Athletics give students a broad eye on what is to come in their future; it provides them with more than one option when progressing throughout their life. Secondary athletic activities make meeting new people safe, friendly, and fun for everyone who participates. Sports gives students what some might say “a home away from home” , and by keeping these athletes busy there is no time for them to get involved in drugs. As publicized by numerous studies, a lower drug use rate is linked to students who participate in an extra-curricular activity. Being a part of a team supplies athletes with a sense of responsibility and commitment, two very important characteristics in life. Taking part in extra-curricular activities is a key component in being not only an accomplished student, but a more dynamic civilian. College athletes should not be paid it will ruin college sports forever. Some people believe that college athletes should be paid by the school because of all of the hard work they put in however they shouldn’t be paid because there is no fair way to pay every college athlete. There are many reasons that college athletes shouldn’t be paid one of the main reasons is that colleges don’t have enough money, the second reason is that they already get money in the form of scholarships, and there is no fair way to pay each college athlete.
I have decided to write a response paper to Ekow N. Yankah’s: “Why N.C.A.A. Athletes Shouldn’t Be Paid”. Although I enjoyed reading his perspective, I do not agree with his statement which addresses that student-athletes shouldn 't get paid. Universities are using their student-athlete’s popularity to promote their athletics program while the student-athletes are unable to promote their own image. Student-athletes work hard day in and day out, basically like having a full time job. Which makes time is also very limited during the day for student athletes to get a real job to pay for the extra expenses that they need. Also, most of the time coaches will not allow the student athletes to work, because of their conflicting schedules with practice.
High school sports are approached with clashing opinions. Some of these opinions are positive, and supportive of athletics. “Athleticism, among many activities, offers teens a physical outlet to exert their troubles, anger, emotions, and other feelings” (Chen 1). This can be observed in nearly all of the football players in Friday Night Lights. This can also be noticed in the world today. “Athletics help high school students understand their own abilities and talents” (Chen 1). This piece of evidence is very accurate when describing high school athletes. Sports can make a high school student humble. As can be seen by the preceding information, high school athletics can have a positive impact on a student’s life.
There has been an extensive debate over the years about college athletes being paid and I honestly don’t see why there is a debate about it at all. The NCAA has strict rules about players receiving benefits from the school in forms of helping players and their families in the form of paychecks or even helping pay bills. College sports bring in an enormous amount of money for the schools every year and are expected to be given nothing in return. Sports do not only bring in money to schools but also more students and fans. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) have taken several players’ records and rewards from them for the simple fact of getting benefits from the school and that is just not acceptable (Allen 115). Athletes are just like every other student in the way of having to pay for housing, food, bills, and more. College sports have become more popular throughout the past few years and the NCAA is doing an immense amount of money. This increase in money has caused colleges to become involved in this global debate over whether college athletes should be paid or not. Many athletes believe they should be paid for all their hard work, time, and dedication to the organization. Other people like, Kristi Dosh, believe that college athletes shouldn’t be paid because there are too many questions that haven’t been answered for them to join the opposing side. A lot of questions come up with this debate, like which athletes are going to get paid? Kristi Dosh is an author and an ESPN sports business reporter. Dosh wrote the essay, “The Problems with Paying College Athletes”, on June 9, 2011. This essay was published in Forbes which is a business magazine about sports and money. Kristi Dosh makes a somewhat convincing argument by asking a lot of questions to get her audience to realize how difficult this change is, however; she doesn’t do a very good job giving any citations or statistics to back up her statements. Ultimately, I think Dosh is convincing to her audience, but the weaknesses outweigh the strengths.
Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. This study provides concrete evidence that high school sports can help to gain mental and social skills that will be used later in life
College sports have grown over the years, earning billions of revenue every year. However, what may seem surprising is that the athletes involved do not get a single penny earned from the revenue. These college sports require tremendous time and determination due to long hard practices along with rigorous course works. And due to the lack of time, athletes don’t often have the time for part time jobs that allow them to earn money to buy things they need or want for their personal life. Therefore, college athletes have every right to be paid for their hard work.
School athletes tend to be high school super stars and teens tend to admire them and what they do. Having them as a good example is a good advantage to decrease the amount of students consuming drugs in schools. In most cases teens tend to try drugs due to peer pressure and its really hard for them to fight throughout this because they can get bullied and called “losers”. Having school athlete’s drugs free is a reliable way for teens that are put through pressure, being and example for those who are exposed to this.
Should college athletes get paid while in school? The schools are allowing the athletes to enroll because of their athletic talent of playing football. They got his uniform and practice gear covered because of high academic achievements. Also, they are looked at by college scouts based on what they see on a football field. College football should be paid because of the time and energy they devote on and off of the football field, so they can play at the college/university he desires.
Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.
Why do teachers get paid so much less than sports players? A teacher mentors a child or teenager and gives them knowledge. A sports player plays a game in which they are good at and love to do. So why does a sports player live a dream life earning millions of dollars a year while a teacher is stuck living the middle class life.
Most kids from age twelve to eighteen create a long road of drug use, fighting, and alcoholism for themselves; culminating a life of stress and hardship. Nces.ed.gov states that 87.6% of students who participate in extracurricular activities have stayed clean from drugs and alcohol, and steered far from fighting and physical altercation. A myriad amount of students have also stayed out of petty crime accusations and in school drama when they participate in these activities. Aside the clean background these students also, they have been able to make more appropriate friends and learn to be themselves, in other words they have come to find their "destination" in life. At some point students has had trouble either at home or at school and need to release stress or tension. Some of these times the teens choose to do activities that are wrong. Youth want to feel comfort and accepted, therefore they sometimes will do events that are not well for their body just to fit in with a group. There is evidence that proves sports can reduce the likeliness of teens committing crimes, or getting into trouble. Tees look at the negative substances such as drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, and think that they can do whatever they want. Many teens look at these activities and think they are “exciting” or “cool” and want to try them, but if they are busy with sports they most likely will not be as easily influenced. Participation in sports helps keep teens out of trouble by taking up their free time which could be used for mischief, gives them an opportunity to meet new friends for positive role models, provides teens an outlet to develop a higher self-esteem, and also enables student to set goals for on and off the field.
Do extra-curricular activities have a positive or negative effect on a student’s academic performance? If they do, then why do schools take activities away from students at the first sign of academic troubles? If they are scientifically proven to be positive, then why are they not curricular rather than extra curricular? There are numerous influences that impact the academic performance of a student other than after school activities. However, this study will focus on the effect of extra curricular activities on academic performances. In many cases, participation in extra curricular activities positively influences attendance and connection to school. This study will investigate the impact of extra curricular activities that require a daily commitment over an extended period of time, greater than a month. Athletics is the dominant after school activity that requires a daily commitment; therefore, this study will involve student athletes as well as students who are involved in other extra curricular activities. Another reason why student athletes will be a large part of this study is that there may be a correlation between the skills necessary to succeed in athletics and academics (American Sports Institute, 1991).
