America is a place that encourages freedom and equal opportunity. Unfortunately women are not always receiving that equality in their paychecks. The problem is in some instances, women still are not being paid equal to men in the workplace. In fact, they are still being paid seventy five cents to the man’s dollar. It is unfathomable to think that the wage gap continues to exist in 2015. Women have undoubtedly become a significant part of the American workforce. However, women’s pay has not kept pace with their male counterparts due to several reasons. One major reason why women are not being paid equally to men, is the way our society views working women. For example, women traditionally are not seen as the main “bread winner” of a household. In fact, in our society, men are traditionally seen as the main source of income. In our society one of the main arguments commonly used by those in favor of the wage gap, is that women take significant time off of work to have children. Although this argument seems reasonable, it does not take into account the countless number of women who simply are not going to have children. To assume that every woman is planning on having a child is extremely unfair. This point of view is misogynistic because it is designed to financially hinder women. In fact, this way of thinking is dangerous and ideas such as this should have been left in 1950s America. One other major reason women are not being paid as much as men, is the lack of opportunity to be promoted in the workplace. Why are working women not getting promoted as fast as their male counterparts? In some instances there is a stigma against women holding higher positions in the workplace than a man. For example, you rarely see a woman holding a leadership position in corporate America. This means that many women are being denied higher paying positions in the work place and are placed in less significant, lower paying jobs. While men are being promoted more easily and as a result being paid significantly more than women in the workplace. In order for the wage gap problem to be solved, women need to be given the same opportunities in the workplace as men. The wage gap issue affects not just working class women, but society as a whole. Women who are not being paid as much their male counterparts for the same position, often find themselves unable to meet the needs of their family. Many women for various reasons are single parents and or head of the household. While their higher-paid male counterparts may be able to provide for a family, many working women find themselves without the means to provide for their family. As a result, women are often required to utilize public assistance in the form of food, healthcare, and housing. This in turn places a burden on working tax payers and causes strains in government services. This results in cuts in services for needy citizens in our society. The wage gap also affects society because we continue to lack diversity in professional and corporate levels. By giving women higher paying positions we are diversifying the workforce and society as a whole. In American society we are accustomed to seeing only white males holding higher up positions. This can be seen in corporate America, in places such as Wall Street. This is clearly something that needs to be fixed in our society today. A progressive society such as ours needs more diverse people in these executive higher up positions. However, without addressing and solving the wage gap problem we cannot make positive strides as a progressive society. Diversifying the workforce would positively impact society because careers are the single most important part of our daily lives. The ultimate goal is for anyone to achieve financial success in the workplace despite one’s, gender. In the last fifty years society has changed drastically when it comes to women in the workforce.
As a result, the only logical solution to the problem would be to give women equal pay as men. This clearly would mean that women are being given higher up positions in the corporate setting. It is troubling to think that this issue has continued to go unsolved in the twenty-first century. What is even more alarming, is that there would be no negative repercussions to ending the wage gap. The wage gap is completely unfair and has clearly given working women a disadvantage in the workplace. This solution would help working women in society because they would finally feel equal to men in the workplace. If we keep allowing this to happen, it will only hinder the progress of other women’s and other progressive issues. It is time to end the stigma on working women in our society by ending the women’s wage gap once and for
all.

This study also concludes that the only way to eradicate the wage gap is through legislation that have punitive measures for discrimination based on gender.
