“The Crucible” is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953. Arthur Miller read the “Salem Witch Trials” when he was in college and in that moment he knew he had to write about the period. Miller said in an article: “The Crucible was an act of desperation. Much of my desperation branched out, I suppose, from a typical Depression -- era trauma -- the blow struck on the mind by the rise of European Fascism and the brutal anti-Semitism it had brought to power”. He compared the actions committed in the late 1600’s with the actions committed in the process of the Second World War. Arthur Miller was an atheist and that is why the character “John Proctor” did not believe in fantastic events. Guilt motivates not only the witch hunts themselves, but also the behavior of several principal characters. This is shown in a quote of the character named Putnam that says: “Wait for no one to charge you, declare it yourself. You have discovered witchcraft”. The society of the story prefers to proclaim the sins and having a small punishment than not proclaiming them and having death as a punishment. This example represents very well our actual society, except the part of proclaiming our sins. We prefer to tell the sins of everyone than our sins. Sometimes the guilt we feel makes us act in a certain way so it could go away. We should look our own sins and try to correct them and we shouldn’t look the sins of others because no one is
