Essay #3 Under the nose of America’s health industry, behind the backs of “big pharma”, people are turning to a special compound that stands out from the toxic, ineffective, and costly traditional treatment of serious ailments. Today people are using psilocybin as form of treatment because it is free, natural, safe, and effective in it’s application to battle and cure many serious illnesses and psychological disorders. In 1958 Albert Hoffman, the famous scientist to first isolate lysergic acid diethylamide or LSD, took on the feat of isolating psilocybin, a compound found in mushrooms ingested in spiritual rituals in Oaxaca, Mexico. Then one day I read an article about a sufferer experimenting with magic mushrooms containing psilocybin and experiencing full remission. I’ve followed this trend through the years to today where we are beginning to see more and more of cluster headache victims take advantage of this free, natural, and potent mushroom that brings those in torment, relief. A study in 2006 reported 26 cluster headache patients dosing with psilocybin resulted in 22 patients responding with aborted cluster headache attacks and period termination. (Post 2014) These studies support the idea that psilocybin and the way it interacts with the brain is beneficial, furthering this trend in treatments involving this powerful compound. Today there are very little tools in psychiatry to treat existential distress, prescription drugs have shows to be ineffective and can exacerbate the ailment. In the late 1950’s and into the early 1970’s, experimental analysis was conducted with hallucinogens to treat this despair and isolation cancer patients felt when faced with the reality of death. Patients dosed with psilocybin experienced sustained emotional improvement and less in need of narcotic pain medication.
