In the United States, the use of illegal drugs and the abuse of prescription drugs by Americans are becoming a serious problem. The illegal drugs that are commonly used are cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, marijuana, heroin, and LSD. Even the legal drugs are being abused like alcohol, nicotine, narcotics, anti-depressants, over-the-counter drugs, and anabolic steroids. There are many Americans who are concerned about growing drug problem. This brings up the question of why drugs have such a detrimental effect in this country. How come so many Americans are becoming addictive to these drugs? Where are Americans getting these drugs? What effects do these drugs have on people? That is about one out of every twelve Americans that uses or used illegal drugs. This issue is very interesting because of its affect on many young Americans and the country as a whole. Drugs are ruining so many lives and often is killing them. I know that America has been at war with drugs ever since the 1920s. I know that drugs are coming from across the border by drug smugglers. I have seen my friends and family become addictive to some kind of drug. I know many college students and even younger kids become regular users of drugs. This is a big problem in our society of young men and women. Our youth is the future of the country.
