The use of drugs is a controversial topic in society today. In general, addicts show a direct link between taking drugs and suffering from their effects. People abuse drugs for a wide variety of reasons. In most cases, the use of drugs will serve a type of purpose or will give some kind of reward. These reasons for use will differ with different kinds of drugs. Various reasons for using the substance can be pain relief, depression, anxiety and weariness, acceptance into a peer group, religion, and much more. Although reasons for using may vary for each individual, it is known by all that consequences of the abuse do exist. It is only further down the line when the effects of using can be seen. Reasons for using drugs depend on the type of substance being taken. Two common examples of widely abused drugs are marijuana and cocaine. Since both of these have different effects, the individual will likely take the drug that can best resolve their problems or needs. Marijuana is used for many reasons, including illegal or medicinal purposes. The motive for smoking marijuana unlawfully depends on the user. Unlawful smoking of marijuana is done for several reasons; these include peer pressure, pressure from outside the peer group, the desire to relax, and the need to even identify themselves with popular media icons. The effects of the substance also cause symptoms that seem to be highly desirable. When smoking marijuana the user feels a sensation of exuberance, as ideas begin to flow more easily, creative and philosophical thinking emerges. Music becomes more appreciated as a deeper bond is felt. The user's awareness of their senses increase while a pleasant feeling takes over the body. Young people are using mood-changing substances at an increasingly younger age. Persistent substance abuse among youth is often accompanied by a plethora of problems, including school related hardships, health-related problems, poor family relationships, mental health issues, and run-ins with the justice system. There are also significant consequences involving the community, and society in general. Studies show drug use at a young age increases the desire to abuse as you get older. Society looks at drugs as being a taboo, which is the norm for our country. However other countries see drug use as a way of connection with oneself and others in another realm. Now whether drug use is harmless or harmful is a matter of your personal preference.

In youth specifically, drug abuse can be triggered by factors such as: a parent’s abusive behavior, poor social skills, family history of alcoholism or substance abuse, the divorce of parents or guardians, poverty, the death of a loved one, or even because they are being bullied at school (“Drugs, brains, and behavior”) .
