Argumentative Essay on Pornography
The Catechism of the Catholic Church recognizes that pornography consumption, or the participation in its distribution and production, to be sinful because it is harmful to the soul as well as eternal salvation (McGeady, 2004). The term pornography is derived from a Greek word that means prostitute, harlot, whore or the action of selling a woman’s body (Winfrey, 2009). The term pornography alone degrades women, let alone the act. The different forms of pornography come from videos, music, poster magazines, and the Internet, which is the most popular. The words “sex” and “porn” rank fourth and sixth among the top ten most popular search terms.(Internet Safety 101) Since these sources of media are easily available, it makes it that much easier for people to access pornographic material. Serious effects associated with pornography include; disgracing and violent acts toward women and sexual problems that are associated with pornography include the difference between real sex and pornography. Considering Catholic Church’s view of the role of pornography, the aim of this paper is to answer the question: Should we be allowed to judge others decisions?
The United States increases in selling pornographic material each year. Every second, approximately $3075 is being spent on pornography, and 28 thousand internet viewers are viewing internet porn. (Internet Filter Review, 2006) According to O.Winfrey (2009) pornography is not only a billion dollar business, but also experience an annual sale of above 50 USD per year. Conclusion
In light of the Catholic view of pornography, there is a need for the society to change its perception on the role of pornography. With the current concern of sex lives, it will be an interesting experience to see what will happen to pornography in years to come. There are possibilities that the use of pornographic materials to improve sex life between marriages will either increase or decrease. Because of the raised concerns, men should ask themselves whether it is worth to put their marriages at stake because of fake sex. Since watching pornography is seen as a negative habit, both men and women should shift their focus from pornographic materials to real sex in their marriage. This is mainly because, by concentrating in real sex will help raising stronger relationships between couples.
